The clock ticked onto the minute the next class was to start, the most important class of the day, the class that was the reason any of these students were here. The door to class 1-B suddenly opened, and the Heroics teacher of the newest generation of heroes quickly glided in and promptly jumped in the swivel chair behind the teachers’ desk- that every student could swear was not there before- and spun around to dramatically reveal his presence.

"Hello class!"

Two weeks into the school year and class 1-B was learning that Monoma-sensei was always dramatic like that, but these especially fast entrances meant someone was late, and two seats were empty.

As everyone came to that conclusion, the two students in question ran into the room and looked bewildered to see their teacher sitting before them.

Phantom Thief turned in his chair and jokingly shook his head. "Well look whose absent selves decided to show up." The two students stared at him shellshocked before the one on the left sputtered and shouted.

“WHA- Ho- How?! You were way behind us!” They pointed an accusatory finger at the teacher as if they were accusing him of being a witch. The other student stayed silent and hung their head.

Phantom Thief just gave them a smug look and shrugged. “A good hero always finds a way to enter the scene quickly. If you want to be marked present on my sheet you should be wiser with your time.”

Several of the present student cringed at his words and the guilty party panicked at the implications of Monoma-sensei's words.

“You can’t mark us absent! That’s not fair!” The first student stomped their foot on the ground and looked ready to argue, the other just nodded at the first’s words.

Phantom Thief suddenly went serious and gave the students an intense pointed stare while somehow keeping his lax posture.

"And if you are too late in saving a civilian? If you fail to catch a villain? Will you shout and pout that it was "unfair"?" The whole class went deadly silent to their teacher's suddenly serious lecture. They had never been given a talk like this before and everyone grew on edge at this new territory.

"No one will give you sympathy just because you "tried", no one cares that you gave a good effort at it but it was "out of your hands." In this field, you will either do your job well or you won't." Phantom Thief stood from his mystery chair and looked down at his absent students, but not with rage and disappointment.

"In this class I am to teach you about how unfair this field will be. As a hero, you are responsible for the lives of everyone around you and the freedom of those who wish to harm others." The two students in the doorway stopped leering away from their teacher's intense gaze and instead looked back at him wide-eyed. His gaze wasn't intense because he was upset, he wanted them to stand tall against it.

"Not only at UA, but for the rest of your life, you will put your all into everything you do. And no one will ever accept "unfair" as an excuse."

The room was silent for a moment. His words seeped into everyone there, not just the late party. Then Phantom Thief gestured for them to go to their seats.

The two mumbled a 'yes sir' and hesitated, stopping between a few steps and Phantom-sensei looked unapprovingly at this reaction. They realized what he expected and shouted a more enthusiastic "yes sir" before rushing to their seats.

More approving of that response, Phantom Thief nodded and returned his attention to the whole class, who was spellbound.

"On that note, it is time to start- Heroics!" An expandable baton suddenly appeared in his hand and timely reached its full length as he pointed to the whiteboard behind him.

thought about Vlad King in the Monoma Death AU and it beat my ass, so i figured i'd compile some old ideas into a post

anyway i could spend hours thinking about Vlad King and Monoma and how their relationship evolved over the year (from teacher and student to trusted mentor and star pupil to Father Figure and Child) but i have predominantly been haunted and vexed by the thought of how Vlad reacts when he learns that Monoma is dead.

the war is over. the heroes are exhausted, but they're already doing whatever they can to run damage control: recovering bodies from the battlefield, reassuring civilians that the conflict has passed, and already organizing efforts to repair all of the damage that has been done. Vlad King makes his way to the hospital because he has been told that Monoma is there—was rushed in after being speared through the lung by a Twice clone—and Aizawa stops Vlad before he gets to Monoma's hospital room to try and break the news to him delicately. (Vlad is too late, but only barely. the time of death was called minutes prior).

Vlad shoulders past Aizawa because he doesn't believe him (doesn't WANT to believe him), and he barges into the hospital room only to find medical personnel in the process of unplugging a host of machines as Monoma's heart monitor wails. the attending notices him and firmly directs him out of the room, and the moment he's back in the hallway, he's collapsing into a heap by the doorway.

Aizawa comes to stand by him and tries to start a conversation (tries to apologize), but Vlad can't focus on what he's saying. all that he can think about is the fact that they convinced his student (his son) to serve as a lynch-pin in the war and then left him to die. (they were supposed to protect him. Vlad had asked Aizawa to protect him.)

eventually, a nurse comes out to express her sympathy and invite Aizawa and Vlad back inside, but Vlad can't find it in himself to accept the offer. he can't stand to see Monoma like that again so soon—pale and lifeless and still streaked with his own blood—so he leaves Aizawa to pay his respects and makes his way back to the waiting room so that he can update the four Class B students that he saw when he came rushing into the hospital. (Fukidashi came with Monoma. Kendo, Awase, and Tsunotori came as soon as the battle had ended and they heard where their friend had been sent).

Vlad stands outside the waiting room door, taking a moment to compose himself. the very foundation of his world feels like it's crumbling, so he has no doubts that he's about the completely shatter the world of his four students—and there's nothing he can do to soften the blow. but they need him to be strong, to be a rock that they can cling to when the news hits. so, with a heavy heart, he pulls himself upright, takes a deep breath, and enters, ready to face the hardest conversation of his life.

(two days later, Vlad King will finally work up the nerve to visit Monoma and say his goodbyes. two days later, he will grasp Monoma's small, cold hand in his own, intending to offer a litany of apologies for which he will never receive absolution. two days later, Monoma—as he is wont to do—will defy any and all expectations set before him, coming back to Vlad with a series of harsh coughs and wet, shuddering breaths. and Vlad will watch in stunned disbelief as the impossible unfolds before him, the unfathomable weight of his grief and relief crashing down on him all at once.)

If his own quirk even awakened, would he be happy the government didn't make him do it, or would he start fearing his own power? As a kid, he resented his quirk. He finally started to like it, and then when he started his pro hero career, he started fearing it again. It's a self-destructive loop nobody can pull him out of, and it isnt even his fault. This is organized torture all for the sake of another weapon. He just wants to make people feel safe exactly like he did as a kid.

Because under all of those layers he's that exact same kid who just wants to be told he's doing okay, he didn't have the time to heal.

ANYWAY

I wonder with all the other awakenings happening if Copy could awaken itself to force these awakenings without the stress, but that doesn't make particular sense to me so moving onto my other idea. Would Copy self preserve itself and to defend Copy's quirk wielder, would it shut down?

Maybe it would malfunction or get so worn down he needs a break from it all and the government HAS to give him a break, or they find another way to break his quirk so he's only a machine to them.
