we gave six robots six guns and asked them to build an even bigger gun. they asked for some paintbrushes and paint instead and made a really hurtful caricature of me

downloadedethicsâ:
As the unit began to made his way through the main hall, a number of Weyland-Yutani workers crossing their paths and throwing them a few curious glances their way, the android barely batted an eyelid, his eyes on his goal, unmoving, unflinching from the task that was he was programmed to accomplish. Yet it was what the other android had said that something within him found curious, the notion of something that wasnât alive being âexcitedâ a strange admission to something that was so strictly coded to believe that it wasnât even close to being possible. He didnât know what to say, it wasnât as though he could return the comment, all too aware that it would be a wooden response, no honesty in his words since he was created to believe that he wasnât capable of feeling such a thing. He was a machine, he couldnât be excited, he couldnât feel happiness⊠he was just an empty shell that could loosely pretend to be a real boy when in the presence of those he believed required such falsities. A category that this⊠Connor didnât fall under.
âYour responses are remarkable human, if you donât mind me saying so.â Walter admitted as he continued, his features still that same expression, blank, devoid of anything even close to some kind of emotion.
âForgive me, it may prove necessary that I extend the parameters of my behavioural programming.â He half explained, trying to let the other android know that his silence wasnât merely out of rudeness, but a simple lack of his coding that allowed such detailed reactions in the presence of something that was meant to be as emotionless as he was. He could hold a conversation with a human with general ease, but finding small talk with something of his own kind was different. His coding made him out to be the robot that his engineers had intended, offering little more than very short and logical answers if any at all, something he deemed to be problematic in the presence of something as advanced as this investigative model beside him.
âYes, I understand that my predecessors were something of a concern to humankind. They were too human, able to think for themselves.â The synthetic agreed, having gone through the David 8 units files, whether his creatorâs knew it or not. âI was created with⊠fewer complications.â He turned his head to the side, adopting a posture that might appear less formal towards the curious Cyberlife model. âI was created to serve.â
âNot at all,â Connor replied with a soft smile. âI was built with a highly sophisticated social program. Most androids of my kind are meant to work under humans. I am the first of my kind to work directly alongside them. As such I was given a state-of-the-art social system, so that I can blend in more easily with other members of my profession.â
The irony isnât lost on Connor; the most emotional and âhumanâ android from CyberLife coming to investigate how human Weyland-Yutaniâs androids are. Itâs something of a slap in the face from CyberLife to Weyland-Yutani. Look at us, we can build a human android and you canât. If Connor was capable of caring, he might have thought that it was rather cruel. But it wasnât his job to judge. His job was to follow the law, follow his orders, and follow Walter on this tour. Which was what he chose to focus on now.
âWeyland-Yutani speaks highly of your model,â he commented lightly. âI read through all of the files and sales media that I was given access to. Your abilities are impressive.â He tilted his head back, echoing the gesture that the other robot had given him. âIt seems that we were built opposite from one another. Do you think itâs bad that I wasnât built to serve the same way that you were?â
What he asked might have been a test. It might have been just a question. It might have been genuine curiosity. What Connor wasnât aware of, was how badly he wanted to know the answer.
