“we are each half of something greater, as the legends say. we are both carved in lockstep pieces. and when the bones of our fingers tangle like jigsaw puzzles i swear upon the sun and the moon and everything bright in the sky that all my jagged lines could find home between yours, and all your frayed edges could find comfort next to mine. it’s a pity, my beloved half, that greater does not always mean better, or even good. it’s a pity, my beloved half, that two halves don’t always make a whole and two puzzles pieces don’t always fit in one picture and two hearts that beat together don’t always cease together. it’s such a pity, my beloved half, sometimes two halves can make a whole heart a whole story but sometimes, my beloved, sometimes, two halves do not come together so much as collide and all the spaces between them go up in flames like a volcano like a burning star exploding into supernova: merciless. brilliant. blinding. deadly. and what, the legends ask, is left in the aftermath? why, my beloved half, we picked up the shattered pieces of it all– of you, of me, of the world we burned in the spaces between us– we cradled their serrated edges in the nest of our joined hands we anointed them in the bloody rivers in the creases of our palms. oh, and we kissed those broken-glass pieces, and we called it love. oh, and we swallowed those broken-glass pieces and we called it remembrance. oh, and we whispered with broken-glass voices, and we called it holy. and one day, my beloved half, they will bury the broken-glass pieces– of you, of me, of the world we held in the spaces between us– and they will call it history.”

lullaby
tell me that this time the story will be different
tell me that
this time
the word
stay
will spring forth from all my silence
tell me that this time i’ll eat soup
and you’ll hold my hand
and the truth of the cold / december / wednesday beyond the windows
will wait a little longer
tell me that this time
nothing will have to change.
you go outside.
the story begins again.

i’m really new to tumblr and i also know pretty much nothing about art, but i recognized this piece that i adored when i saw it in chicago and had to say something.
lonely is definitely the word to describe nighthawks: it’s that time of night when it feels like you’re the only person in the world. the room is supposed to be bright and warmly-lit, but because it’s almost all glass, the people at the bar still have that melancholy blue in the background. they came there for comfort, but the outside darkness is leaking in.
beyond that, i love that none of them are really looking at each other, even the two sitting side by side. kind of like being alone in a crowded room, except it’s not crowded. there’s only four of them, brought together by the oppressive world outside. if they all got to know each other, talked for a few minutes just to keep the loneliness and darkness at bay for a little longer-
they would forget about the experience in a week or so until some time years later, when it’s three in the morning and they feel like they’re the only person in the world. and then they remember that they aren’t.
but that will never happen. they’re all lost in their own little worlds. looking out at a vast plain of nothingness when there’s somebody right behind them.
ugh.

"The Blood Mirror" (2015 - Jordan Eagles and others) / "Nighthawks" (1942 - Edward Hopper)
THE BLOOD MIRROR: The blood is encased in resin and preserved in the form of a reflective mirror that visitors can view themselves in, seeing their images in blood that could have been used to save lives but due to the FDA bans was wasted. Even now, there is still celibacy bans on queer donations and the Blood Mirror forces you to see your own life in the blood of the community that is not being used to better society by prejudice. (weeweewhirlwind)
NIGHTHAWKS: The feeling of loneliness and isolation in this piece just gets to me. You’re outside of the diner. You can’t get in. It’s blue out there and the room is warm and alive and they’re all look at each other and not at you. It’s like the viewer doesn’t exist at all. (envelopedbyoblivion) (also submitted by anonymous)
("The Blood Mirror" is an installation piece made of glass and the blood of 59 queer men who donated to the project, organized by Jordan Eagles, a gay American artist. The piece was made in retaliation to the FDA ban against queer blood donors. It measures 84 x 28 x 28" (213 x 71 x 71 cm).
"Nighthawks" is an oil on canvas painting by American artist Edward Hopper. It measures 84.1 × 152.4 cm (33 1/8 × 60 in.) and is currently held at the Art Institute of Chicago.)

this is what you do, to survive. you ride the dusty bus into the city as sweat slides down your neck. you eke out a living and you help when you can and you try not to be seen. you ride the bus home and the breeze chills you to your soul. you eat soup on the battered couch and read your best friend’s palm as some sort of vague reassurance. you lay in bed and remember a family lost, a family best left unfound.
you say, this is your family now. you. her. the sun.
you shatter and you make yourself tea. you water the roses on the roof and weep over them like graves. you pretend that you do not ache all the time. you are fine. you are alive. you are kind. that’s all that matters.
