Hiccup: Years ago, in the middle of the night, I had a nosebleed so bad, I was covered in blood
Hiccup: So I went to wake my dad up. He opened his eyes to see a bloodsoaked boy in the dark saying, "Please help," and to this day, I can still hear him screaming

Rhythm Thief is so much more serious and (hilariously) tragic from the Vergiers’ perspective.
Three years prior to the game, Emperor Napoleon’s casket gets stolen. There’s a string of thefts from the Louvre with a weird mark on them. Some guy called Graf is involved in all this and he’s putting pressure on the police’s investigation, but who even is he?
Emma Vergier passes away. Constable Loic says Paul has been working non-stop on the same case since her death (implying Emma’s death is fairly recent and linked to the case). Paul looks like he hasn’t slept in months. He doesn’t go home for days and he neglects his kid.
Turns out this other kid— Phantom R— is stealing artefacts with the same mark on them. The mark that might be linked to Emma’s death. Paul vows to see Phantom R in chains, surrounds him outside the Louvre, and chases him across rooftops with helicopters and the Paris Roller Skate Brigade. All the while, Phantom R is laughing and skipping away, like this is a game to him.
(Phantom R might somehow be linked to Emma’s death and he’s laughing—)
Paul doesn’t want Charlie involved with the hunt for Phantom R in case Charlie gets hurt impedes the investigation. Meanwhile, Charlie dubs Phantom R their nemesis, attacks him in full view of Constabulary HQ with a football, and almost falls off the roof of the Paris Opera fighting Phantom R. This isn’t technically Phantom R’s fault, but STILL! Charlie’s trying to ‘prove their worth’ to their father, but Paul would rather distance himself from Charlie. (Bear this in mind when Raphael beats Charlie in a soccer shootout, when Charlie almost falls from the roof, and when Fondue chomps on Charlie’s leg.)
Paul loses his family photograph with the promise from Emma written on the back. He has a huge argument with Charlie— probably about how Charlie fell off a roof— and Charlie storms away.
The next time Charlie sees Paul, it’s to inform him that there are Chevaliers invading Paris, led by Napoleon Bonaparte(?). He then meets Napoleon and orders for the city to be evacuated. He has a shootout with the chevaliers. He knocks out some Chevaliers with Charlie’s help and the two of them somewhat reconcile, but then a giant FLOATING RUIN arises from beneath the streets of Paris???!!!!
Napoleon shoots Duchess Elisabeth and Marie cries over her mother’s body. (Bet that was rough for the Vergiers to see!) Paul and Charlie team up with Phantom R to fight off some robots(?). Phantom R manages to defeat Graf, who has secretly been deceiving the Duchess’ daughter this entire time. Paul arrests Graf and agrees to let Phantom R go for now, but vows to catch him one day.
Somehow, Phantom R stops the giant floating fortress. Charlie goes back up there to save Phantom R and Marie. Turns out the Duchess is alive and she reunites with Marie.
Whenever Phantom R turns up for Marie’s performances, Charlie and Paul try to catch him. Paul’s smiling by the end of the game, so you think, maybe he’s somewhat recovered from his Trauma—
But then, here comes the Vergier Family Bonus episode. Charlie reveals that their father knows the Napoleon they all fought was a fake. Charlie goes to investigate the site of ‘Napoleon’s’ stolen casket, but they’re attacked by some leftover Chevaliers. Paul arrives and helps Charlie fight off the Chevaliers. When Charlie points out that these Chevaliers were coordinated with a leader, Paul shuts them down and says the case is closed. He agrees to let Charlie help the police, as long as Charlie stays where Paul can see them. After Paul leaves, Charlie investigates the tomb further, and Charlie finds SOMETHING—
The game and the bonus episode end on a cliffhanger. We never find out how/when Emma died, or what Charlie discovered. Paul’s clearly still hiding things from Charlie.
And, all the while, the pair of them keep chasing after the dancing phantom thief and his Alsatian cheeshund.

Ahhh, the shot of this random guy helping Superman stand up warms my heart.

One thing many modern superhero films miss out on, I feel is the Superhero's relationship to the random people they save. Many MCU films have escalated to the point of numbers so high its unthinkable- and they've lost that personal touch. Moments like this are a visual metaphor for what makes the hero keep fighting, keep going, keep standing up. There's a reason this scene from Spiderman II is one of my favorites ever.
