Why Ishgard?
Or, “How did an Au Ra from Sui-no-Sato become an orphan in the Brume?”
As is usually the case with such stories, it begins with Arumi’s parents. Though she was born to the isolationist Raen who call the bottom of the Ruby Sea home, Arumi’s mother fell in love with one of the pirates who roamed the top of it. After they decided to live together despite the disapproval of their respective communities, they stole away into the night on a rowboat and headed towards the port of Kugane.
Hingashi was a home for them for many years, and there their impromptu family grew significantly after the births of Arumi and her older brother. It became a struggle to support themselves in the port city, so Arumi’s father negotiated with the East Aldenard Trading Company and secured passage to Eorzea by indenturing his services in Ul’dah.
Life in the Sultanate, however, proved more difficult than he would have imagined. His sailing talents proved of no value to his new employers and the mining work that they pressed him into was backbreaking and difficult. Arumi, who by this point was only ten years old, spent almost all of her time with her mother, as the men in their lives were mostly absent - her father working for pittances in the Thanalan sun and her brother cavorting around with street gangs in the back alleys of the sapphire road.
Two years later, her older brother was dead. It was never really clear whether the Brass Blades had taken his life or if he’d lost it in some sort of gang rivalry. Either way, the stress of that loss wore heavily on Arumi’s mother, whose health had already been suffering in their new home. She would also pass away merely months after the family’s first loss. Heartbroken and unable to explain to his confused daughter why her mom wasn’t coming back, Arumi’s father broke his contract and left Ul’dah on the next Chocobo caravan.
Ishgard was as far from Thanalan as he could get. He traded heat for snow, his mining job for work quarrying greystone, and the backstreets of Ul’dah for the Brume. The work was just as miserable and they were treated no better by the Ishgardians than they were by Ul’dahns, but at least they were together. At least they were far away from that place of tragedy. He’d make it work this time, for her.
He died a year later to a dragon attack.
#luminous prophesies - headcanons#I know this is rather dark but...#Is your OC really even an OC if they don't have a tragic backstory?#At least don't accuse me of half-measures

Muse Info
This is a blog for Arumi Onmyōji, an Ishgardian Auri OC. She’s not a WoL or otherwise an important character; she’s just a smol, traumatized Astro who spends most of her days (and nights) curled up in the guild’s library. If you’re interested in interacting with my best approximation of a Cryptid in dragon girl form, this is the place.
Content Description
Arumi is an Auri Astrologian who has lived in Ishgard for most of her life. She has endured more than her fair share of abuse for her physical features, which in Coerthas are unfortunately perceived as dragon-like. She has always had an odd personality, and years of abuse have made the girl meeker than ever before and prone to bouts of disassociation. Despite that, she has earned her place as one of the foremost scholars of Ishgardian Astrology and few others can claim to have such an innate understanding of the celestial spheres and their movements.
Content Warnings: abuse & neglect, especially towards children; fantasy racism; mental illness / special needs, especially pertaining to dissociation and childhood trauma. If any of the above are problematic for you, I would urge you not to follow this blog. These themes are fundamental to the character and may crop up throughout her interactions.
Spoiler Tags
This blog contains spoilers up through the Heavensward expansion as its default. As an Ishgardian native, the events of that expansion are directly reflected in her life. As such, I cannot separate such spoilers and tag them separately. If you are reading this blog, assume that everything up through the end of Heavensward’s patch content may be referenced.
Anything specifically pertaining to the events of later expansions will be tagged using the following notation:
“#sw: sb” for Stormblood spoilers
“#sw: shb” for Shadowbringers spoilers
