“Oho! That love you hold dear in your heart...

You know well that it won't work out,

but you have no intention of giving up!”

Pavlova’s words echoed in his ears as his vision dimmed and blurred, the sounds of steel clashing on steel fading to near silence as his body screamed at him in agony. He barely registered Raspberry’s call for his aid, his head fuzzy with static. All he could feel was pain - excruciating pain - shooting up through his arm and all over his body. His eyes threatened to close, but a desperate cry kept him just conscious enough to witness a soldier race up to his crumpled form.

You. Of course it was you. He could recognize your voice, your face, you, anywhere. Why wouldn’t he, when he’d had his eyes on you for so long, yearning for the chance to tell you how he really felt? 

A pain rivalling his physical injuries erupted within his heart. You weren’t meant to see him like this: weak…hurt…perishable. He was meant to be your foundation, the one you could always rely on. Yet, here he was, reduced to a small heap of a man on the ground. He wanted to recoil when you approached him, but his limbs wouldn’t respond.

You said his name again, quieter this time, as you hugged his limp body to your own, sobs wracking your throat. 

“Wildberry, please, hold on! I can’t do this without you-” You curled over him, as if that would protect him from his fate. Perhaps he could take solace in your warm presence once more before succumbing to his wounds, he wondered, as he focused on the sound of your heart beating rapidly within your chest.

You sniffled and wet droplets splattered onto his face. Your hand cradled his face marred with pain as you look into his eyes, hoping uselessly for a different outcome. He weakly held your hand with one of his, fighting desperately to remain conscious.

“[name]...” His breathy words are interrupted by a wince as the pain continues to thrum within his dough, “I…”

Your grip on him tightened, another sob escaping your lungs.

“I…I don’t know how much longer I have,” Wildberry’s voice wavers, “I should’ve said this sooner…” Even on his deathbed, the words just wouldn’t come out.

In his last moments of consciousness, though, he fights to bare his heart to you, his lips moving to spell the words you’ve always wanted to hear.

“I love you.”
