“Cuirasse pour femme” (“Cuirasse for a Woman”)
Culture: French
Date: Around AD 1410 or 1420
Weight: 9 lb. 4 oz.
Credit: Les Invalides
Info: Breastplates, consisting of one solid piece of steel protecting the chest, started to rise to popularity around the 1350s and 1360s as armorsmithing technology advanced. Though they went through many changes over the years and across different regions, the use of solid pieces of rounded steel worn over one’s torso for protection lasted well into the Napoleonic Era.
This particular example is remarkably well-preserved for its age, and appears to have been designed with a woman’s figure in mind.
Though its actual origins are widely disputed among scholars, this example is often attributed to Comtesse Jeanne de Fausse, who took leadership of her husband Comte Charles de Fausse’s cavalry while he was bedridden with a fever. Most notably, Madame de Fausse is said to have lead the charge against the English to great effect in the Battle of Pavrai, AD 1424. One poetic account of the Battle of Pavrai asserts that the English longbowmen present, distracted by the Comtesse’s voluptuous figure, were unable to aim effectively, and shot wide. However, this account is likely embellished, and scholars generally agree that, more likely, strong winds from an approaching storm blew the volley of arrows off-target.
