Danny Fenton was being haunted. Annoyingly, that wasn’t at all unusual. Danny was sadly used to being haunted. One could even claim, if one was being pedantic, that Danny haunted himself. Sure, since Danny had moved away from Amity Park and the mess his life had been there, the haunting were a lot less frequent, but they still happened from time to time. The thing was, is this haunting was different. Different in a way that made Danny worried about the ghost and their well-being.

It itches under his skin like a burning. They give him medicine. They have plans- a new idea- something big. And Danny? Danny is afraid that them trying so hard to make him better will kill him. And so he runs.

Until it snowed in Gotham, a thin sprinkling of white flakes, and Danny got cold. Red Hood shook him from his stupor of staring at the snowflakes melting in his hand. He seemed worried that Danny was cold. Danny looked up from his hands, blue eyes wide. Not just wide, terrified. He leaned in, whispering like it was a secret. “I can feel the cold. They really did it, didn’t they? They took it from me.”

For Danny, who died every time he transformed to Phantom, those marks were scars, of course, but also seizures and hearing loss and a tremor that was bone deep. The death almost becomes easy. It's the living that's hard. But for once Danny's lucky might play in his favor and give him someone who understands.
