Carey was shocked at how the blonde had no filter about the topic at hand. “I mean he’s not allowed to tell anyone or go to the hospital. Larkin is very controlling of him often times like Clu can’t breathe without his say so. The boy had to beg to be on the football team so he could use it as a cover for the bruises he gets. It’s always been a mix of experiments and punishment.” He shook his head remembering years of this. At her next question Carey had to think on how to word it, “ Trust me we’ve tried. And every time we have tried Clu just comes back worse than before. He also didn’t used to be this way things didn’t change until Clu turned eight I mean he was always a little harsher with him but never like this.” He chewed on his lip looking at her. How could she think they wouldn’t try to stop their father? This was their baby brother she was talking about they loved him and wanted nothing but happy things for him. “I fucking know that, Keeley. I see shit every day and I don’t know how Clu has lasted this long with Larkin around. So I’m open to suggestions as long as it doesn’t involve Clu getting more punishment because of us.”

Carey had agreed to hear Keeley out on how to help his brother with Larkin so he was currently meeting her for lunch. A bit taken aback by how forward she was when he made it to her. “I think he has but doesn’t mean he won’t obey him.” Carey sat down and nodded his head as he listened to the blonde talk. “I agree it is a dangerous situation for all. I have no idea what his meaning behind having Kendall at the house was about,” He started sighing heavily before he continued on. “Again I agree he’s done poorly these last few months, Larkin has kicked up his experiments on him. It’s as if he has no control like he is mentally ill but Clu doesn’t stop him. Larkin has had a very strict set of rules for Cluey since the beginning.” He cleared his throat by taking a sip of his water now. This was going to be a long conversation too bad it would have to be over several meet ups.

Carey chewed on his lip as he listened to his brother mainly watching as he walked to make sure he didn't fall down. Carey’s eyebrows furrowed when he said it was nothing to be proud of. “Clu Davies, you had bruises covering your body on top of a pretty severe concussion and somehow you managed to free her and drive safely to the hospital. If that’s nothing to be proud about then I quit nursing.” He looked at his brother hoping he understood his amazement. “Yes we can stop. Take as long as you need.” Carey helped the boy sit on the floor to give him a chance to catch his breath.

Carey couldn’t be angry at his brother being snippy with him after all it wasn’t his fault. The teen should be out having fun, going on dates and instead he was having to worry about being able to get off the floor with no leverage to use. “Hey, I’ll do something don’t worry.” Carey would go behind their father’s back if he had to. He helped his brother up off the floor as carefully as he could he knew the boys body had to be in some serious pain. “Just take it a step at time and if we need to stop tell me. You can’t keep pushing your body,Cluey.” He told the teen knowing if he kept going the promise he had made would be broken. “I told you when you got to the hospital how proud I was of you and that’s because you did something that directly disobeyed Larkin and you made sure Kendall was safe. You kept it together long enough but now let us take care of you.” He sighed starting to walk beside his brother. He admired how strong the other was sometimes ,he had seen the biggest guys come through the er and they cried at the tiniest bit of pain but his brother lost a lot and barely cried out.
Clu closed his eyes briefly at his brothers words glad the girl he liked was safe. “Are you going to help me up?” He didn’t know why he was being so snippy with his brother who was just trying to help him. He usually wasn’t maybe it was whatever drugs their father had used this time, but Carey didn’t seem to be angry with him about it. “I wish we could do more than a skype call.” Clu sighed heavily. “He made sure I couldn’t do anything for myself, made me completely dependent on him. Because you know as well as I do that he won’t let me get a cast on this arm and well the other one is gone.” Clu was still coming to terms with being a new amputee. He looked to his brother his body was cursing every little move he made and they hadn’t even started their walk to his room.

Carey got it now as to why his brother was being so stubborn. He should have known it always comes back to Larkin. “To your room and I’ll leave.” Though he didn’t plan on completely keeping his distance. His brother needed his medical attention. “She’s as okay as she can be. Worried about you. She’s safe, Keeley is keeping a very close eye on her.” As he should be doing with his brother. “I can help you set up a skype call if you’d like but don’t stay on too long cause of your concussion.”

Carey wasn’t concerned about what their father could do to him so much as what he was doing to his brother. “Clu, I’m not going to leave you here. You’ve been through too much in a short amount of time.” The promise still very much in his head as he talked with his brother. “Just let me help you stop being so fucking stubborn. If I have to I will get Carson.” He threaten his sister on the teen she was the tough love one when he was in this rough a shape. He needed to get a good look at the boy to see what was physically possible for him to take care of at home without Larkin making it worse. “The quicker you get up the quicker you can call Kenny.” Maybe that would get him to let him help.
When it finally registered that his brother was there talking to him Clu looked at him eyes still slightly closed as if the lights hurt them. “You have to get out of here,Care. If he thinks I ran to you I’m scared he’ll do something to you or even Kenny.” Clu started trying to sit up wincing as his body protested. “Damit.” He yelled frustrated at himself. How was he supposed to protect Kendall when he couldn’t even take care of himself? “Just leave me here. He’ll be back any minute.” He told his brother clearly frustrated as ever. He needed to break this cycle.

Carey had just finished his shift at the hospital and sat his stuff down to go check on his brother knowing their father had been busy with him since he had disobeyed him. “Cluey?” He called out not seeing the teen anywhere he kept walking ending up in the basement. “Clu, are you okay?” He asked rushing to his brothers side. He looked him over and noticed his arm was broken and more bruises and cuts lining his body. “Hows your head? Double vision anything?” He asked a bunch of questions trying to figure out what to do first. He knew that he needed to contact the Tates as both Keeley and Kendall had been asking about him he would do that after the teen got to safety.

Carey looked at his brother wishing he did have the answers he searched for. He landed his hand on his brothers chest to ease his mind, “I don’t know,Cluey.” He started never losing eye contact with him. “Just relax. I’m here all day.” He offered Clu a smile hoping that reassured him he would be fine. He knew he wasn’t normal but at least he was alive. He was most definitely showing signs of PTSD and all he could do was make sure he wasn’t alone with Larkin anymore as best he could.
Carey still felt very uneasy about how his father and brother had returned home. Larkin had been acting as though everything was fine after holding Clu hostage. Carey hated that his brother had made him promise they wouldn’t return to the hospital. Larkin had hired people to look after Clu. Carey was sitting in his little brothers room where he had been living since his return. “Clu, you can’t keep letting him win. You’re going to die.” He said his voice faltering as he looked at how small his brother had gotten in the weeks he was gone. “I made a promise to you I wouldn’t let that happen. You can’t breathe on your own, you can’t even leave your bed. Let me do something please.” He begged him to let him help. He hated seeing his brother this way.

Carey hated to hear his brother talk about himself this way. He deserved everything life had to offer him not live his days as a glorified lab rat. “Clu,you can’t think like that. You’re so young still.” Carey sighed before going into extreme nurse mode when his brother’s breathing became erratic. “Breathe deep breaths,one..two..” he counted reaching for his brothers newly prescribed inhaler. “Keep counting and deep breath in.” He held his brothers inhaler to his mouth and pushed down on it. “Better?” He questioned him watching his chest.

The doctor had left the room not long after Carey had left to go looking for their father once he had made sure that the teens heart rate was stabilizing. It was Carson’s turn to calm their brother, “He had to step out for a minute he’ll be back, Clu.” She tried her best to give him a small smile. “What do you need from,Care?” She asked him hoping that it was something that they could help with instead. She was trying to hide her worry about their brother searching for their father so Clu didn’t get suspicious and want to leave even more than he already did. Little did the all know that Larkin was much closer than they all thought. Larkin came in to his sons room and the girls got scared of what he would do to not only Clu but them Carson tried to protect him by stepping in front of him, “Hi, daddy.” She gave him a smile trying to get out of the trouble she knew was going to follow. “Don’t hi daddy me,Carson Michaela, I know that Clu is behind you. I know you’ve all disobeyed my order of no hospital. Now let me just take him home and make him better.” He said his tone even but his features said it meant business. “You can’t have him. He needs to be here.” She said and Clarke had sent their brother a message that their father was at the hospital. “Oh I can take him, it’s my right as his father.” He pushed her out of the way and started unhooking Clu from all the machines. Alarms going off were quickly disengaged as to not alarm the staff. “Come with daddy,Clu Davies.” Larkin helped his son off of the bed and carried him out of the room without even being stopped. “What the hell just happened?” Carey asked as he walked into the room only to see his sisters. “Dad fucking just happened,Carey.” Carson said throwing her hands up.

Carey was in the kitchen getting ready for tomorrows shift at the hospital when he received a text message from his brother telling him to come quick. He knew that he had been down in the basement for several weeks since their father’s last experiments and Carson and him had gone against him and ruined his supposed work on their brother. He wasted no time rushing down to the basement to check on him. Carey rushed in to the makeshift cage that held his brother and a look of complete shock was on his face in an instant. “ Holy shit.” Was all he had managed to say when he got a look at his brothers newly missing limb. He had no idea what was going through their fathers head at this point. Did he think that somehow Clu was evil or did he lose his limb due to blood loss as the boy was beyond pale.
When Clu heard his older brother’s voice he gave him a sleepy look. He knew that he was in rough shape he didn’t know how much blood he had loss though. “So sleepy.” He said his eyes slowly closing only for them to open again when his brother smacked his face. “Ow.” He shouted at Carey. “What was that for?” He asked only wanting to find rest forgetting that he was the one that had requested his brothers help. “Sleep.”

At his sisters assurance Carey followed the doctor outside of Clu’s room. The doctor looked very puzzled and Carey guessed as to why. “Carey, your brother shows years of abuse. Not only physical but substance. If you need to tell me something this remains between us, the officer that will be here shortly and the social worker. We want to help your family, you do so much for this hospital.” He told the oldest Baxter and Carey was relieved and scared all at once. “It’s our father. He’s gotten worse over the years and we just didn’t know how to stop it. We aren’t even supposed to be here as it’s against his rules for Clu.” He stated with a sigh. “What exactly are you saying, Carey?” The doctor questioned the male. Carey swallowed hard before answering the question, “I’m saying our father is mentally insane and has taken it out on Clu since he was like seven. We all thought he would stop but it only escalated.” It was at this point that the officer and social worker appeared. “Sir, we need to know the whereabouts of one Larkin Baxter.” The officer stated to Carey. He wished he knew where he was so he could make him pay for hurting his brother the way he had. “Officer I wish I could tell you where you could find him. All I know is that he left my little brother in the cage down in our basement and my first thought when he texted me for help was to rush him here. My father was gone when I went down there.” As he was talking to the officer the social worker wrote down what he was saying and Carson yelled for Carey to come quick. Without hesitation he made his way back to his brother, “It’s going to be okay,Clu.” He told his brother as he watched his heart rate drop on the monitor the doctor had happened to follow him in the room. “His heart is weak from everything.” He said reaching for the oxygen to put on the teen. He couldn’t stand to see his brother this way it was most certainly the worst he had been. “Clarke and Carson stay here with him.” He told his sisters so they were safe and watching their brother. He was going hunting.

Carey just kept his eyes on Clu until he heard Carson walk in first. He didn’t have the answers his brother wanted and that scared him. So he just remained quiet as Clarke walked in behind their sister.
The whole ride to the hospital Clarke tried her best to keep a panic attack at bay. She was always so scared of what she would see when they needed to care for Clu. She ran past their sister and pulled Clu into a hug. “Cluey, I thought I had lost my best friend.” She admitted still holding him in an embrace as if she was scared to let go. “He’s going to pay this time. I’m tired of him hurting you. To be honest we should’ve done something a long time ago.” She said with a nod to her siblings. “I’m sorry we failed you.”

Carey hadn’t prepared himself for Clu’s quick questions. He took a deep breath before he reached for his brothers chest to calm him down. “They are okay. They’re on their way here now,” he started trying to avoid the question about him not being okay. “Don’t worry about dad I’ve got it covered.” He tried his best to reassure his little brother that he was safe and Larkin wouldn’t get his hands on him. “You need to rest, you lost a lot of blood, Clu.” He admitted to him hand still on his chest. “I’m not going anywhere, I promise.”

“No,Clu, you need to stay awake.” Carey urged his little brother as he quickly thought of a way to get his brother real medical attention in a safe environment. “You can do this.” He encouraged as he picked him up off the cot he just needed to go. He’d make sure their sisters knew as soon as he could manage. He raced up the stairs and to his car not an easy feat by any means with his teen brother not able to help ease his weight. He carefully placed him in the front seat and raced off to the hospital. Once there the male relaxed slightly knowing he was in good hands but only just; because he knew he would have to answer questions. He paced back and forth while the doctors tried to stabilize his brother. He made the call to Carson, “Act as calmly as possible when you and Clarke leave the house. Clu needs us badly. We’ve gotta stop him. No more of this harming of our baby brother.” He made sure he stated the last bit softly as to not draw attention to him. “Carey?” His follow worker questioned as he saw the other male on the phone. “Why are you here you aren’t due to work tonight?” Carey hung up the phone quickly and bit at his lip briefly. “My little brother got hurt.” He said simply as he saw his brothers doctor come out. “Can I go see him now?” He asked hating the fact that he was away from him when he needed him. The doctor nodded, “yes but he also needs all the rest he can get. He’s lucky you got to him in time. What did you say happened?” Carey froze the question he was dreading. “Chainsaw accident.” Why did he just lie to a doctor he worked with? The doctor bought it at least for now. He also thought for now it was safer for his little brother to tell the lie. It was no time before Carey found himself beside Clu. “Hey Cluey.” He said softly to the pale teen laying on even paler sheets.

It always took Clu several minutes to regain his composure after he woke up from his father’s experiments. This time it was no different well except for how long he stared at his left arm where his hand should be was now just a stump wrapped in bandages with a tube sticking out running to a collection jar. “Good you’re awake. Feeling good?” Larkin asked looking at his son filling up needles no doubt to inject them into his system shortly. “Wh-where’s m-my ha-hand?” He asked his father trying to sit up in the cot but Larkin gently pushed his son back. “Easy, you’re fine.” That was all his father said finishing filling the needles and leaving the room knowing that his son would obey him and not leave the cot. Clu reached for his phone to text his brother. COME QUICK! Dads gone don’t know how long. So tired. He put his phone beside him hiding it the best he could. He just laid there still staring at his arm as he waited for Carey to come to the basement.

Clu didn’t hear half of what had gone on while Carey had unstitched his eyes. So when his brother asked if he could blink he attempted his best. “Did I do it?” He asked his brother due to the sedative he wasn’t sure he was doing much of anything. “You all should go dad will be coming back soon.” He told them not wanting them to get in trouble for putting their foot down against Larkin. He knew what their father was capable of. “Please. I’ll be okay.” He urged them to listen to his pleas. “Sorry can’t do that little one.” Carson said coming back to beside his bed. She was determined their father wasn’t going to get his hands on him. “He’s not touching you. For fucks sake I don’t even know what he did to you but I know it’s not any good.” Carson bit at her lip looking at her little brother. “Just shut up and stop pushing us away because you’re scared dad will hurt us. We can handle it and you shouldn’t be alone,Cluey.” Carson was the one who rarely broke down at anything but here she was tears in her eyes at the sight of Clu telling her to leave when he couldn’t even leave his bed.
“She’s right, Clu. This has got to stop before we lose you.” Carey said swallowing hard. He felt the guilt of letting it go on for too long already. “I should have stopped it years ago. I don’t know how you’re still here.” He shook his head it wasn’t as though Carey didn’t want his little brother to be here with them it was more so he had faced multiple odds due to their father and survived; he had seen things far less leave people broken hearted working at the hospital. “Don’t take that the wrong way at all please,Larkin is vicious and cold hearted I’ve seen so much and I just can’t believe you are such a fighter, Clu.” Carey sighed heavily looking at Clu before continuing looking him over. “Let us worry about him you just need to rest people are starting to get suspicious like that Kendall Tate girl in your class.” He didn’t like talking about any one the way he was about Kendall but she needed to mind her own business if she wanted to keep breathing the way she was. “Larkin is going to end up killing you if he keeps touching you the way he is.” Carey swallowed hard maybe if he said it out loud enough they would see the urgency of the situation.
