In the early 20th century, lavenders were associated with the queer community as they were used as a way to discreetly describe something gay. The girl in the painting is romantically involved with another woman, but in her faith it is a sin. She felt that relishing in sapphism caused consequences pertaining to her conflicting beliefs. Hence, she can be seen clutching a hyacinth while praying, signifying her guilt as she asks for forgiveness.
