Week 12 – EC – Class Feedback
The best thing about this class is having to explore different artists and know their career and passion about art.
Yes, the integration of BeachBoard with the art website is effective.
I like the idea of doing a blog since this is my first time using tumblr and I can post my work on it.
I enjoyed doing the weekly activities because they were very interesting such as making zines, drawing, and taking pictures.
The Artist of Week was a great activity because I got to know different artists such as their backgrounds. Whenever I think of an artist it's mostly those who make art like painting or drawing but the OTW activity made me realize that vloggers, mashup artists, Djs, singers, choreographers, photographers, and anybody who is interested in art can be an artist like a Doctor who got hooked on “photo a day”
The useful paragraph was helpful because sometimes I don’t clearly understand what the instruction was and the useful section provided some additional instructions which makes sense to me.

Week 12 – Artist – Abramovic-Althamer
Marina Abramovic is a Serbian artist and refers to herself as the “grandmother of performance art”.
Her work mainly focuses on the idea of creating an art and collaborating with the audiences. She is known for using body art and feminist art. For example, her first performance entitled Rhythm 10, utilized knives and tape recorders to stab the spaces between her fingers. Whenever she cut herself she would do it again and listened to the sound of the recording. Another work of hers called Rhythm 0, involved audiences and their role was to use objects towards her such as oil, scissors, gun, honey, rose, and a whip. The audience were allowed to do anything to her body without consequences and they held no responsibility.
Paweł Althamer is an artist better known for creating projects also involving the community but the difference between Marina and Pawel art is that Pawel uses sculptures. For instance, the Almech, he uses his father’s plastic factory from Poland and moved it to a Berlin museum where he set up machines for the sculpture workshop. Visitors can view artists who are part of the workshop and see how they make it.
The differences between the two artist, Pawel creates art that is effective and safe for the audience and the artist while Marina makes art using her own body and the audiences have the power to decide what to do with her body.
Both artist are incredible but in my opinion I think Pawel’s artwork attracts me more than Marina’s because her body acts an a object and medium for her work which can be very nerve-racking.

Week 11 – Artist – Choice
1. Describe the artist?
2. How long have they been an artist?
3. What are the factors that influence them to do what they do?
Whang-od Oggay, or known as Maria Oggay, is a 104 years old Filipino tattoo artist from the Philippines. She is known as the oldest tattoo artist and started tattooing at a young age, 15 years old. Every tribal tattoo she creates contains symbolic meanings. Tourists all around the world would visit her province to get a tattoo from her. “The tattoo ink she uses is composed of indigenous materials, usually a mixture of charcoal and water that is tapped into the skin using a thorn from a calamansi or pomelo tree”
Her father was a tattoo artist, despite that only men with special tattooing ancestry were allowed to learn the art; however, Whang-od was an exception due to her talent and potential in tattooing her father taught her.
Mark Machado or better known as Mister Cartoon is an American tattoo artist, born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Similar to Whang-Od, he also started at a young age where he discovered he was an artist. At age 12 he got his first art job. He is a popular tattoo artist and has tattooed his clients like 50 Cent, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and more. His artwork has been featured in many publications such as The Wall Street, XXL, Rolling Stone, and etc.
Additionally, he had a photographer business partner, named Estevan Oriol. They owned SA Studios Global, which is a marketing agency in Los Angeles, and were given the opportunity to collaborate with companies like Vans, Upper Playground, Nike.

Week 10 – Art Activity – Intermedia
My idea is to make a single line drawing but instead of drawing I use a yarn. My other choices for my media are watercolor, colored pencil, and oil pastel. ai picked colored pencil because I am comfortable with using the material and I think if I use watercolor it would be difficult for me since I am not used to it, however I believe that water color would be the perfect material to use for this work. I am quite satisfied with the artwork I made and I think it conveys the idea that I wanted to create, a single line drawing of a face.

Week 10 – Artist – Joseph DeLappe & Micol Hebron
Joseph Delappe is an artist that uses new media and electronics. He creates online games and relates them to issues in politics when he started his project “dead -in-Iraq”. He stated that “ In this computer game, there are no real consequences of dying and the main objective is to kill as many people as possible”
Delappe uses video games, sculpture, and installation art as a medium. Hebron uses social media, digital media, and video as her media to project her works.
Micol Hebron as an artist works primarily with the idea of feminism in art. She uses her own body to create her art.
Delappe’s strategy of making video games to represent political issues was a great project. Hebron’s utilization of social media as her medium worked perfectly because her audiences can share their opinions and thoughts about her work.
I never thought that video games could be a form of art media.
Delappe’s and Hebron’s use different media to present their work. I think using movies as their media would be efficient since they mostly use visual aid arts.

Week 9 – Art Activity – Time-Series Photography
My rule is to take a photo of me every time I lay in my bed.
I pick this rule to see how I look as soon as I wake up or go to sleep. I was hoping to see a result of different types of emotion that I felt that day or night. I was expecting to have a joyful moment and me looking cheerful but it was the same feeling throughout the week.
If I had a team of 5 people at the office task with coming up with a business marketing plan, my rule-based experience would be to take pictures of every person who’s holding drinks, any kind of drinks to see what’s most popular to a certain age group and try to sell all those drinks so that all different age group can be our customers.

Week 9 – Artist – Eric Singer & Ewa Xebra
Eric Singer’s work is very amusing and entertaining because the instruments move on its own without an individual playing the instruments. It's impressive that robotic instruments can produce music.
Ewa Xebra is a photographer and mostly takes pictures of her family. Her image shots show her day in the life where she spends most time with her family.
The musical robot is similar to a piano player because both instruments can play by itself without a person. The difference between the two is, the piano player plays music that has been recorded while the musical robot is designed to construct a different sound coming from an original instrument.
The photos of Ewa Xebra’s daughter Luna are captivating and it feels like I am involved with her growing up as I view her images when she was a newborn and now.
I would say Singer and Xebra’s are committed and determined to their works. They enjoy what they do. Eric Singer is a professional in his field and has an understanding of advanced technology and Ewa Xebra also uses technology but in a more simple way like to capture images.
If you were going to make a musical robot. It would be like the player piano because I like the sound of the piano. It calms and relaxes me.
If I were to take a photo once a day for 10 years, it would be the sky because not everyday would be sunny or gloomy. There would be some time that we feel down or upset and the sky would look depressing and dark. However, tomorrow might change and the weather may be clear and bright so that will motivate me to keep waking up and go on.

Week 8 – Artist – Addario-Cardiff-Miller
Lynsey Addario captures the images of conflict and humanitarian crises in the world. For instance, the wars in Afghanistan where she documented the experience of Afghan women that were suffering under the oppressive rule of the Muslim fundamentalist Taliban regime. Addario's job can be life-threatening because she is involved on the front line to document what is happening.
Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller works often use sound and motion. They mix reality with fictional narrative to change the perception of the audience's environment. Cardiff and Miller stated that the goal was to “highly convince the audience with the audio component aimed to trigger their emotional and physical reactions, which in turn affect their visual perception”
In my opinion, Cardiff-Miller artwork is amusing.
Addario and Cardiff-Miller work are similar in a way that they show us the real-life images but they have different objectives in their artwork. Addario’s images are informative and bring awareness to individuals while Cardiff-Miller focuses on giving entertainment to audiences.
If I had to choose between Addario and Cardiff-Miller line of career, I would prefer Addario’s job because I want to explore the world and document important events to share it to others. I would say Cardiff-Miller’s photography emphasis on being creative and I don’t think I have that talent.

Week 7 – Artist – Nan Goldin & Annie Leibovitz
Nan Goldin's work focuses mostly on LGBTQ community, drug use, violent moments. The main concepts of her portraits are love, gender, domesticity, and sexuality.
The image that caught my attention was the “Picnic on the Esplanade, Boston , 1973” I admire how everyone looks untroubled. It seems like they enjoy each other's company and are able to express themselves freely. I feel the same way because I can only show my true self to people that I care and trust.
Annie Leibovitz is best known for her intimate portraits, particularly of celebrities such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Her goal is to capture dramatic poses moments.
This photograph from Annie is my favorite because it illustrates the dark right side and the left side to be a light. To me, all of us have a mysterious or deeper personal side that we keep and reveal only the side we want to show. I feel connected to this portrait since the model appears to be calm and peaceful; however, there is a dirt in her face that may be interpreting a battle she’s been struggling or going through. We all go through something that we don’t want to display to others.
Annie Leibovitz’ “manufactured” portraits and Nan Goldin’s “documentary” portraits are different based on their style. Annie’s portrait is more formal and traditional because of the use of studio and lighting. On the other hand, Nan’s photographs capture the moment, showing one’s true self, and being free.
I prefer Nan Goldin’s style of photography and to take my environmental portrait because she seems to be more expressive with the images she captures, makes you think what's the story behind those images.

Week 6 – Artist – Camille & Sarah Elgart
Camille Dalmais is a French singer and songwriter. Her 2005 album music called Le Fil translates as ‘The Thread’. The B tone is present in every song in the album which makes her album unique because she was able to use her voice as an instrument.
Sarah Elgart is a director, choreographer, and producer. For instance, she was the choreographer for the film Star Trek: Into Darkness, Red Riding Hood, and more. She was the founder of ‘Dare to Dance in Public Film Festival’ its about the connection between dance and camera, or in other words, a short film of dance. She believes that dance film is an art form. Her content is to combine music, color, movement and perform in a location such as a bus terminal or airports and transform it to look different. She produces powerful dance movements which show the element of art in it.
Both artists are different in regards to their work, but they are similar because of how unique they make their work. Camille uses her own voice as an instrument which not a lot of artists have done and as of Sarah she was able to pull off a dance movement and perform to public places which was known to many audiences because of how creative she is.
My experience with the automatic drawing is similar to Camille’s music, specifically her album Le Fil because what my friend and I drew is how we imagine the campus would be. Basically we just go with the flow of what we think the campus looks like. Camille’s album Le Fil shows how her mind works and came up with an idea to use her voice as an instrument and she went with it with all her songs in the album. As for Sarah, her creativity is her talent. I think what I and my friend did with our drawing, we try to show our creativity side.

EC#1 - Girl with a Pearl Earring
Johannes Vermeer is a painter and has a wife named Catharina. Griet is a dutch girl who becomes a maid to Johannes Vermeer because her father became blind and Griet must work to support her family. Vermeer and Griet worked together because of a commission from patron Van which the Vermeer’s household income comes from to support a new born baby of Catharina. Griet and Vermeer understand each other and they share a similar desire to art and colors. I think what drew them to each other in the movie scene was where Vermeer asked Griet about the color of the clouds. Griet responded by saying white but she quickly changed it and looked carefully then she said the color of the clouds were yellow, blue, and grey.
On my 20th Birthday, I received a watercolor painting from my uncle. He painted a star that was blazing with fire which he put a lot of detail into. I didn’t recognize there was a pink and black color that was mixed into the red and yellow.
Vermeer’s paintings are located in different museums throughout the world but the most famous painting of Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” is in Mauritshuis museum in The Hague. I haven't been to those museums that have the painting of Vermeer but I would like to visit the Mauritshuis and The Metropolitan Museum of Art to see Vermeer’s artwork.

Week 5 - Artist - Kara Walker and Russell Crotty
Kara Walker is an African- American artist and known for her cut-paper work which represent historical narratives, gender, stereotypes, race, and sexuality through silhouetted figures. Walker’s style of art aids the viewers to fully understand the historical past, sexuality, race, and gender. I think her work is really creative because she illustrates the past by creating silhouettes artwork. It’s a shadow of our past which means that we should learn and not forget about the past.
Russell Crotty is an artist and most of his artwork is based on astronomy themes where he creates his art on a globe. I think his artwork depicts the beauty of the universe and his own interpretations of astronomy. I think his work is showing that in darkness or in space there’s beauty in it. He is also creative because he does not use a traditional canvas instead he uses a globe figure covered with paper to draw on it.

Week 5 - Art Activity- Drawing
Yes, I had fun drawing but I don’t really like to draw. However, I will try it again. Yes, I think if I practiced for many hours I would get better. My major is pre-nursing, I believe sketching can be useful in my career especially if I handle patients that are kids. For example, I can draw them the body or organ of a human and show them how disease or injury can affect the body by drawing simple figures. Drawing is a language and yes we can say things with drawing that are hard to say with words. In instance, medical terms that kids don’t know yet can be explained to them through drawing/sketching.

My original idea was to make a video of myself when I was a kid and now that I am an adult but I wasn’t able to find a video of myself when I was kid it was mostly all pictures. Therefore, I decided to change and think of a different way to make my project. I researched for websites/apps which remixes 2 songs together. At first it was difficult to find a decent website/app cause it required a payment to access sound effects. I don’t feel my project was a success because I didn’t expect mixing 2 songs would be hard, I had difficulties with editing, the dynamics, and blending of the songs. But I feel good that I finished my project however what I would do differently next time if I am gonna make another mash up music. I would find and pay for a good mixing software to create new sound, watch more video tutorial about how to make good sound, choosing the right song, how to blend, when to speed or slow down the song, how to harmonize the two songs and how to adjust the volume.
Art can enhance my career (nursing) because studies have shown that people who are suffering with anxiety and depression can improve and be inspired through art. Art gives life, new hope, and light which can help doctor’s and medical professionals to provide good care to patients. They say patients who have been admitted to hospital and engaged in an any creative art activity during the time they stay will reduce stress and will have a positive impact on them.
