04. Sign
Chanyeol woke up disoriented, hearing weird noises that he usually didn’t hear in the morning. Junmyeon was always very quiet. But he wasn’t in his own apartment, and the sounds weren’t made by Junmyeon.
Chanyeol remembered awkwardly coming into Baekhyun’s apartment again. He had thought Sehun’s room would be his for the night, only to realize it was locked. Sehun hadn’t even given Chanyeol his keys this time, just banished him from his own home to spend quality time with Junmyeon. Chanyeol was going to have a talk with Sehun soon, this was getting out of hand.
He sighed and contemplated putting his shirt back on again, but he needed a shower first.
Last night, when it was clear that Chanyeol wouldn’t have access to Sehun’s room, or his bed, or his clothes, Baekhyun insisted on making the couch as comfortable as possible. Which was actually pretty nice to sleep on. But he also helpfully provided a pair of pajamas and a night shirt, both of which were a tad bit undersized for Chanyeol. So, once Baekhyun was off to sleep in his own room, Chanyeol opted to sleep without the night shirt, it was the best option. Now though, as he heard cutlery and plates in the kitchen, he mildly felt uncomfortable.
Not that he was all that self-conscious about his body. But mostly, it was Baekhyun, and Baekhyun was...Baekhyun. A very beautiful guy whose opinion of Chanyeol shouldn’t matter but Chanyeol knew it probably would. At least a little bit. He decided to use the comforter to hide his naked torso instead.
“Oh hey, you’re up!” Baekhyun said cheerfully, but then his face fell. “Wait, shit, did I wake you?”
“Nah, it’s fine,” Chanyeol said. He stopped from saying much else, his throat was too dry and he needed to drink some water first.
“Well, I’m sorry anyway,” Baekhyun said while chaotically moving around the kitchen. “I have a show today, so I have to hurry. But don’t worry, you can rest up, take a shower or stay if you want. There’s a spare key over there, just lock the door when you leave. Alright? I have to go now.”
And before Chanyeol knew it, Baekhyun had planted a kiss on his cheek and was out the door in the blink of an eye.
Well.
Chanyeol sighed in frustration and flopped back down into the couch. Another kiss to think about. Was this another sign?
When he went back to his own apartment, which was after he decided to visit a friend about a project and have lunch, it was well into the afternoon. He thought it would be best to let the lovebirds have the morning, he did not want to see Sehun at his apartment, or talk to him yet. Chanyeol was angry, and waiting to see how long Sehun would be doing this without realizing how much of an asshole he was being.
He was mad at Junmyeon too, but there was nothing much to do about that, Junmyeon was his roommate after all.
Thankfully, no one was at the apartment when Chanyeol arrived. And enough air fresheners were used that Chanyeol almost didn’t think about what might have happened last night. Everything was clean and well put together as well. At least Junmyeon was sorry.
That was one of the things that Chanyeol really liked about his roommate, Junmyeon knew when his actions were wrong or even problematic to someone else. And he did things to make up for it. Things like cleaning, rearranging, doing chores. He refrained from cooking because he was a disaster in the kitchen, but he did other things like this instead. Even Chanyeol had taken to cooking meals to apologize to Junmyeon when he overstepped. And that was fine, it was a healthy way of living with someone, Chanyeol thought. Even if they didn’t always say sorry outright, they still did something to acknowledge their wrongdoings and tried to appease the other.
Sehun, on the other hand, just took what he wanted and didn’t think about anything or anyone else. Which was so unlike him! Chanyeol had been friends with him for over a decade, and this was the first time Sehun had gone on so long being a brat.
Chanyeol really hoped he wasn’t going to be kicked out tonight, he would start shouting, maybe even throw a fist if that happened. It wasn't as if Junmyeon and Sehun were the only two people on the planet who were going out, or whatever it was they were calling it. They should be mindful not to become an inconvenience for others, especially Chanyeol. He was suffering.
It took him the better part of the evening to catch up on his homework, writing papers was the bane of his existence. And it felt worse doing them now in a hurry because he could have completed them long ago if he had access to his room the previous few nights.
Chanyeol was taking a break, pulling up his audio mixer application and listening to his latest unfinished work. Might as well try and make something new to show his professor soon. That was when a text from Baekhyun chimed on his phone.
Chanyeol tried to ignore the text, he tried harder to ignore his reaction to the knowledge that Baekhyun was texting him out of the blue. It was a normal thing people did, Chanyeol told himself. No need to drop everything to find out what the pretty boy wrote, Chanyeol wasn't a teenager.
But Baekhyun's text was as insistent as the memory of Baekhyun's kisses. Chanyeol couldn't stop hearing that chime even though it never rang again after that one time. He was going crazy, hallucinating. He should probably be worried, but all he could do was reach out and grab his phone.
"Roses are red, violets are blue, my show went well, and I remembered you."
Well. What was Chanyeol supposed to do now? Because being chill about this just went out the window.
Why was Baekhyun so straightforward? He probably didn't mean anything by it, this was probably just how he usually was with every friend. Casual, flirty, cheeky.
Chanyeol tried to make himself believe it, it was nothing serious.
"I'm glad your show went well, you seemed tense in the morning. Are you celebrating?"
Chanyeol meant to only congratulate him. His fingers apparently didn't want that, his mind wondering what Baekhyun was doing now. Was he back home? Out with his friends at that bar? Maybe still at some auditorium backstage, taking off his costume…
Chanyeol stopped himself. Very abruptly, but surely. No need to wonder that far. Too soon.
Too soon?
Chanyeol needed to stop daydreaming. He needed to finish his homework, get some sleep, and get ready for a week of lectures and work.
Another text chimed, a picture this time. Chanyeol's fingers moved quicker than his brain and he stared at a black haired Baekhyun holding up beer, he was out drinking. But Chanyeol only saw the black hair, the wink, the slight blush on Baekhyun’s cheeks, the tip of his tongue peaking out at the corner of his mouth.
"Minseok says I should have invited you," another text read. "I was panicking in the morning so it slipped my mind. Plus I didn't know if you'd be free."
"Maybe next time," Chanyeol replied without thinking much.
"You'll get bored, it's all very fake and dramatic."
Chanyeol didn't mind, he'd just stare at Baekhyun anyway. He felt his cheeks warm in embarrassment even as he sat alone in his empty room, it was the truth. Black hair on Baekhyun was...it was just as beautiful as his pink hair, if not more. In a different way. But it made it hard for Chanyeol not to stare at the picture.
"What are you up to, Apollo?" Baekhyun's text came again.
"I was catching up on schoolwork. Apollo?"
"You make music, like Apollo," Baekhyun wrote. "Ignore me. The play is rubbing off on me. A Greek tragedy."
It was physically difficult for Chanyeol to ignore him anymore. But he really did need to finish his studies for the night. Which is what he told Baekhyun, because Chanyeol was strictly against leaving someone hanging, even if it was only in texts.
"Ah, please don't put off your work, I'm on my way home anyway. I might just fall face first on the floor as soon as I go home, and stay there. I'm too tired."
"That might hurt. At least get to the couch."
It was Chanyeol's subconscious, it had to be. Maybe his mind knew what his fingers were typing but he realized a little too late what a trap he set up for himself.
"It would smell like you...
"Unless Sehun rubbed his ass on it, that is...
"Don't mind me, I might be slightly drunk."
One after another, the feelings those texts instigated left Chanyeol a bit breathless, agitated; God knew what was happening to him. He chose to focus on the most concerning topic.
"Are you driving home? Catch a cab."
"Don't worry, giant. Soyeon will give me a ride, she's sober as a button. I know that's not the saying but roll with it."
"You feeling okay?" Chanyeol couldn't help asking. There was something in those texts that nagged him a little.
"Yeah, don't worry, just tired after all that. Been preparing for this show for weeks. Finally done. Kinda feels like my life is over, like I don't have anything to look forward to anymore. But I know it's just the tiredness and probably the third celebratory beer talking. It's alright, I'll be cheerful again soon enough. Maybe I'll dye my hair some other obnoxiously peppy color. Blueberry blue, maybe. What do you say?"
Chanyeol waited, read and reread the long text. He was now fully worried. But he also felt guilty. He was still somewhat a stranger, he probably had no right to worry so much about Baekhyun, who seemed fully capable of taking care of himself. Well, almost. As long as there wasn't any blood involved. And there probably wasn't this time around.
"Dye your hair whatever color you want to, as long as you like it. You look great with the black hair. Bubblegum pink suited you really well too. Blueberry blue just might bring out the color of your eyes."
Chanyeol tried to lighten the mood. And it seemed to have worked.
"I laughed so hard I almost choked. Jongin is not happy, I accidentally spilled beer on him just now."
"Tell him I'm sorry." Chanyeol wasn't, he was very happy with himself, mostly because he made Baekhyun laugh. He wished he was there with him to see him laugh.
Chanyeol tried not to think too much about what he just wished.
"Well, time to go home, giant. Hopefully the couch is left untouched. Later, Yeol."
Chanyeol wanted to say he left things at that, but that would be a lie. He wrote a paper for his music theory, replaying Baekhyun's short poem in his head like a song. He thought about all the weird things that happened in the last two days with Baekhyun and made a whole composition track with strings.
Talk about inspiration.
He felt kind of guilty for the morning. He did try to fold everything neatly, place the pillows and comforter on one side and made sure there was no dirt or dust on the couch or rug. But he could only do so much. He couldn't wash the night clothes Baekhyun lent him, he didn't know where everything was, and it felt like he was invading someone's home. So he left the clothes neatly folded on the couch as well.
Chanyeol should have brought the shirt and pajamas to his apartment, washed them, and then returned them to Baekhyun. But it never crossed his mind at that time. Baekhyun would probably think him uncouth. That couldn't be more far off. He was too much of a neat freak sometimes, Junmyeon would attest to that.
It was just that Baekhyun threw Chanyeol off, even when he was not in the room. It was somewhat worrisome. Last time Chanyeol had felt anything close to this, things had been so bad that he still tried to avoid thinking about all that ever happening.
Maybe he needed to be a bit more protective of himself. Be on guard. Baekhyun was one of those people who was so charming and cheerful that nobody could help but be engaged with him. Everyone was intrigued with him, both in a positive and negative way. Chanyeol was just like everyone else, a bit too intrigued. But it was because he was getting to know Baekhyun up close for the first time now. It'll pass, he told himself.
He lied to himself when he wrote a song, telling himself it was for his songwriting course, that it wasn't about Baekhyun. He was lying to himself, it definitely was.
Junmyeon returned to their apartment while Chanyeol was almost done cooking dinner. Chicken stew, the easiest dish his mom had taught him to cook. He wasn't feeling too energetic to put together anything more. Put everything in the pot and boil, that was all the effort he was willing to give tonight.
"Hey," Junmyeon left his bag and books aside and sat on the stool opposite the kitchen island that doubled as their dining table.
"Sehun not coming over?" Chanyeol asked. He tried to leave out the irritation from his voice, but it didn't work.
"No," Jun sighed. "Listen, Chanyeol, I'm sorry, about yesterday. And the day before."
Chanyeol was a little surprised, no, a lot. He never expected an outright apology. Especially from Junmyeon. Jun even looked actually sincere. This wasn't just for show.
"Why are you apologizing?"
"For kicking you out like that," Jun laughed sadly. "This is your home as much as mine. And it was wrong of me to just do that to you. Whatever you might think of me, I do consider you a friend. And I shouldn't have done that to a friend."
"Well, you sound more like my friend than Sehun," Chanyeol was being sarcastic, but the look on Jun's face sobered him up. "It's fine, you apologized. And cleaned up. I'll take it. You want some stew?"
"Thanks," Jun still looked sad, even though he smiled. "Did you guys talk?"
"No, not after his text last night," Chanyeol sat down opposite Jun.
"I'm sorry, he's a little…out of it lately. Maybe."
"He's infatuated with you," Chanyeol said honestly. He regretted it a moment later when Jun stopped eating. "Hey, look, it's not your fault. He's being irrational about things, and full of himself like always."
"Can I tell you something?" Jun said quietly. He waited until Chanyeol nodded. "Lately, we haven't...I can't remember the last time we sat down and talked, had an actual conversation. It feels like he's only interested in me for…yeah. I feel like I shouldn't have started this."
"Last I remember, he was the one running after you," Chanyeol said.
"But I said yes," Jun stirred his stew in the bowl but didn't eat.
"Look, he'll come around. Maybe. I don't even know anymore, honestly. I haven't seen him be like this before. But then again, he didn't have any relationships before you so I can't say what his usual boyfriend mode is like."
"He's not my boyfriend," Jun said. "That was perfectly clear from the beginning."
"Okay…" Chanyeol didn't know what to say. "Well. Whatever happens with you two, don't throw me out like that again. Give me a warning long beforehand so I can prepare, make arrangements."
"Don't worry, I'm not letting that happen again, if I can help it," Jun smiled.
"Did you… break up, or... "
"No, I just said no to that. No more kicking people out so we could bang. That's rude."
Chanyeol couldn't help but laugh at the way Jun said it.
"What about you, where did you stay the last two nights?"
Chanyeol suddenly coughed, almost choking on a piece of chicken. Junmyeon raised a curious brow but Chanyeol just focused on drinking water and clearing his throat.
"At a friend's," Chanyeol said.
"Oh, Kyungsoo's?"
"No."
"One of your bandmates'?"
"Mmmh," Chanyeol didn't know what sound he made, affirmative or negative, and judging by Junmyeon's creased brows, he didn't know either. But Jun didn't push, and Chanyeol was glad. It felt wrong to make Baekhyun just Sehun's flatmate. He was Chanyeol's friend now.
Well. A friend who kissed him, pecked him on the cheek, took him to a dinner party to meet his friends and wrote him an amateur poem. A friend whom he wrote a song about.
I want to hear the truth, now now now,
Why do you keep beating around the bush, round round round
Even if you act like it’s not, already, already, I can see through it all
Like sand, the tighter I hold on the more you scatter away.
Our gazes missing each other,
Doubts spreading in a way we can’t stop
Hiding a secret, your sign sign sign,
Now stop it, don’t lie lie lie
It might set off a firework that will burn it all down
The words you said to me without a thought, I know,
It’s all a sign sign sign
Air trapped in the silence. I’m anxious, like walking on ice
Stop this endless nightmare, before it’s too late
You already know the answer I’m waiting for
Don’t even think of trying to act like it’s nothing,
Just push me away instead
Our gazes missing each other,
Doubts spreading in a way we can’t stop
Hiding a secret, your sign sign sign,
Now stop it, don’t lie lie lie
It might set off a firework that will burn it all down
The words you said to me without a thought, I know,
It’s all a sign sign sign...
It wasn’t complete, far from it. But at least he was confident about the first and second verses, and the chorus. He might need to ask for his friend Kenzie’s help to produce it, add a bridge, come up with some great tunes to bind it all together. Right now he had mellow tunes that he could strum on his acoustic, but he didn’t want this to be mellow, this wasn’t a slow ballad song. This needed to be powerful.

03. Dinner
Despite everything being white, the food was delicious. Apparently it was tradition that every weekend, if there were no other engagements, they would all gather in one of their places, usually it was Chen and Minseok's apartment since it was away from campus.
"Why does it have to be outside campus?" Chanyeol asked while biting into white asparagus.
"Baek, you wanna explain?" Minseok laughed.
"Loud music," Baekhyun said quickly and took a sip of water. The music in the background was some mild trap beats, pretty chill.
"You mean loud moaning," Jongin mumbled from the side and Baekhyun choked on water, which earned Jongin an upside on the head.
"Let's not make our new guest think we're savages!" exclaimed Poe's wife, Chanyeol couldn't remember her name.
"Well, now that you've mentioned, it'd be more awkward if we didn't explain it," Chen laughed.
"We tend to go a little wild, Chanyeol," Poe said. "Especially after a sufficient amount of drinks."
"I need a drink for this," Baekhyun sighed and got up.
"Have some wine," another ghost smirked.
"Not that," Baekhyun said, going into the kitchen and grabbing a beer from the fridge.
"It was probably our second or third gathering, and back then we had some...entertaining ideas," Chen explained.
"We thought it'd be fun to have a BDSM themed party," Minseok said bluntly. "And someone had the brilliant idea to get me drunk."
"How were we supposed to know you could down a keg without feeling tipsy?" Chen whined.
"Long story short, everyone ended up drunk except Minseok, and we took our theme a bit too seriously...in Baekhyun's apartment."
"Wait," Chanyeol didn't know if he wanted to laugh or be horrified. "Where was Sehun?"
Baekhyun was still in the kitchen with his back to everyone, his ears redder than his pink hair.
"The roommate?" Chen asked. "Probably at some party. It was during Halloween, I think."
"Aren't you gonna tell him the worst part?" Baekhyun returned with his beer. "How the neighbors called the cops and we had to explain why we were dressed in harness and handcuffs?"
Chanyeol choked on the potato.
"It was Halloween," Chen said innocently.
"Or why someone was bound to the bed," Minseok raised a brow at Chen.
"Role play."
"Yeah, it didn't end well, and I'm never going through that again," Baekhyun said. "You wanna have your sexcapades, you can have it in your own apartment."
"If I remember correctly," Chen started, but was soon silenced with a kick under the table by Baekhyun.
Well, that was...interesting.
“Don’t worry, we try not to go overboard after that incident,” Chen reassured Chanyeol.
“Sure,” Jongin grumbled, and everyone laughed.
“Oh, that was all your fault,” Poe said. “Jongin’s initiation was legendary.”
“Initiation?” Chanyeol was confused, they sounded like a cult.
“Yeah, Jongin wasn’t part of our original friend circle,” Minseok explained. “Some of them left after the first few parties, but we loved this, so we thought why not invite more people who’d like this.”
“And,” Chen added. “We just wanted to make more friends who are like us.”
“I was nothing like you lot,” Jongin said in the most dramatic way possible, which only proved Chen’s point.
“Well, we thought differently,” Baekhyun said. “And he was already friends with us in class so he was the perfect candidate.”
“It feels like you wanted him to join your cult,” Chanyeol said and Baekhyun’s cheeks lit up with a smile.
“That’s exactly what it was!” Jongin said exasperatedly. “They lured me in, invited me to a party telling me they wanted to get to know me more, and I thought I was this special guy who caught the eyes of his seniors.”
“Jongin, you are a special guy!” Chen lifted his glass.
“Well, turns out,” Jongin ignored the interruption. “They thought it’d be fun to have a horror themed party, for a guy who can’t even tolerate the idea of ghosts.”
“Oh man, I still remember your screams,” Medusa laughed.
“And remember how he thought Taemin was a real ghost because of his long hair and make up,” the brunette, Soyeon, wiped a tear.
“I was kinda proud of that performance,” Lucifer, Taemin, smiled. “I just wish we recorded it all.”
“Thank god, nobody thought of it,” Jongin gulped down his wine.
They went on with their banters and laughter, Chanyeol honestly felt special that they were willing to share this with him. He genuinely enjoyed being there among this eccentric group of people. None of his other friends were like this, this wasn’t the usual crowd he hung out with. His usual friends were music people, and they were usually busy mixing tapes, participating in recitals, or playing a gig at some quaint bar on weekends. He occasionally saw them at parties on campus outside of class, or at times when they had group projects. None as close enough to call them up for a weekend get together.
Or maybe Chanyeol wasn’t the type of person who got close to people.
It wasn’t a lie that he usually avoided people and large gatherings. Sehun usually took matters into his own hands to get Chanyeol out of his room and into the world. But lately, Sehun was too preoccupied with Junmyeon to have time for his best friend. And it wasn’t that Chanyeol minded, per se. It was just that, he now realized he never felt like he actually enjoyed the company of others as much as he was enjoying this dinner party.
“Alright, time for cake,” Baekhyun said.
“I’ll get them,” Chanyeol said before Baekhyun got up. The cakes were heavy after all the decorating was done. And even though Baekhyun made sure to hide his bandage under the frills of his shirt, Chanyeol hadn’t forgotten.
“I’ll help,” Chen said and came with Chanyeol to the kitchen. “You having fun?”
Chanyeol at first didn’t realize Chen was talking to him until he saw Peter Pan waiting for him to answer. “Oh yeah, not what I was expecting when I was invited, but this is really nice.”
“I’m glad,” Chen brought out small plates.
“Hey, can I ask you something?” Chanyeol waited as Chen started to cut the cakes. “Why did you guys invite me?”
“Why do you ask?” Chen laughed.
“Well, because, from what I gathered, you guys don’t invite just anyone on a whim to this party,” Chanyeol said. “This is, I think, very important to all of you. And I’m a stranger, practically.”
“The fact that you understand is reason enough to think inviting you was a great decision,” Chen said. “Yes, this is important. But we’re not a cult, despite how we might act sometimes. And we like making new friends.”
Chanyeol can understand that, but it still felt like a weak explanation.
“There is also the fact that you saved Baek, and he wouldn’t shut up about you,” Chen laughed.
Chanyeol stopped and stared. Okay?
“Half of us actually thought he was making shit up after what happened yesterday,” Chen said. “So when you showed up, we just couldn’t contain our curiosity about you, I guess.”
“What happened yesterday? You mean me showing up at Baekhyun’s place and scaring him half to death which led to everything else?” Chanyeol said while gathering the plates and forks.
“Uh, yeah, crazy chain of events,” Chen laughed after a while. “Let’s go.”
“You didn’t think it was going to be over so soon, did you?”
Of course he did. Chanyeol didn’t think this dinner party would be anything more than a dinner party. Apparently, he was wrong.
They got on their coats and decided to walk a few blocks down to another place. Chanyeol kind of enjoyed the procession, people staring while trying to be discreet about it but failing. A group of people in white clothes, white coats, walking down the sidewalk without a care, laughing and talking as if nobody else is on the street. Chanyeol was somewhat jealous, that kinda confidence only came with being surrounded by supportive and like-minded people.
“You okay? Enjoying yourself?” Baekhyun lightly jabbed an elbow to his side.
“Yeah, you?” Chanyeol asked. “How’s your hand?”
“Don’t worry about it, it’s fine. I hope my friends didn’t scare you or anything. They can be a bit much sometimes.”
“Nah, they’re pretty amazing people. You have cool friends,” Chanyeol said and watched Baekhyun’s cheeks redden as he smiled. “Thanks for inviting me.”
“Don’t thank me yet,” Baekhyun laughed. “Wait till the night is over, I’d feel lucky if you don’t run away embarrassed.”
“Why would I be embarrassed?”
The place they arrived at was some kind of a club. Rainbow lights hung under an open space, the bar at one end seemed too well stocked and overcrowded. Chanyeol didn’t know what this was, but he loved it. The music was upbeat, but not too loud or annoying, he appreciated good music. People danced, some sat in garden chairs around small tables. This felt like a backyard turned into a nightclub, but Chanyeol loved the relaxed vibe.
“Hey! How was the party?” The bartender asked before Soyeon practically jumped over the bar to kiss him.
“Ugh get a room,” Jongin scrunched his nose and moved over to the dance floor.
There was definitely something in his voice, Chanyeol would have to be deaf to not notice.
“They used to date,” Baekhyun whispered beside him. “Jongin and Lay, didn’t work out.”
Judging by the blissed out smile Lay the bartender was giving Soyeon, he was pretty okay with things not working out with Jongin. Jongin, evidently, was not. But he didn’t linger, laughing and pulling the Medusa, Jessi, into a spin towards the dance floor. Jessi in turn grabbed Baekhyun and before Chanyeol knew it, he was sitting with Poe and his bride at a table nursing a beer and watching people laugh and dance in all their white glory.
“So, how did you like our party?” Poe’s wife, Lisa, asked in conversation.
“Not what I expected,” Chanyeol said. “But it was very enjoyable, thank you for having me.”
“I was a bit skeptical about you, not gonna lie,” Poe asked, Chanyeol couldn’t remember his name, he wasn’t at the rehearsal earlier that day. “The last time Baekhyun brought someone, it was a bit of a disaster.”
“We don’t talk about it,” Lisa joked. “And after Baekhyun told us what happened with you last night, we were sort of too eager to know who you were. Minseok legit thought Baek made you up.”
“Yeah, he does that a lot,” Poe said. “Bit of a drama queen. So how long have you two been dating?”
Chanyeol spat out his beer, coughing ridiculously. He genuinely did not see that coming.
“Uh, we’re not, we’re not together, or dating, or anything like that,” Chanyeol said once he drank some water from the bottle Lisa gave him.
“But, you were at his place, I thought…”
“No, nothing like that,” Chanyeol said. “His roommate is my friend, Sehun, he’s dating my roommate. And...yeah.”
How to say you got kicked out of your own place because two people wanted to bang without being embarrassed? You couldn’t. Chanyeol hoped he didn’t have to elaborate further.
“Oh! So that’s why Baek said he got scared when you showed up out of the blue,” Lisa laughed. “We just thought you surprised him after your date tomorrow.”
“Nah, I wasn’t his date. I was told he would be out so I would spend the night alone in Sehun’s room. Didn’t think he’d be home.”
Poe and Lisa exchanged some worried glances but they didn’t say anything further. Chanyeol sipped his beer and tried not to be too obvious about watching two Victorian ghosts dancing with Medusa.
“You don’t dance?” Baekhyun asked as he sat down beside Chanyeol.
“Not if I can help it,” Chanyeol said.
“Alright, Darcy,” Baekhyun laughed.
“Who?”
“So what have you been doing sitting here all alone?”
It had been a while since Poe and Lisa went on to dance, asking Chanyeol to join a few times but leaving eventually when he wasn’t budging.
“Just enjoying the scene, vibing. This place is pretty cool, I like the music,” Chanyeol said.
“Yeah, Lay makes music like you, he’s older though, maybe two years your senior. He’d have joined the dinner if he didn’t have to take up an emergency shift tonight.”
“So how many are part of the cult?” Chanyeol asked jokingly, getting a giggle out of Baekhyun. Worth it.
“There’s me, Minseok, and Jongdae, I mean Chen. We’re the originals,” Baekhyun giggled again. “Then Jessi, Lisa, Taemin, Lay. We brought in Jongin, Lisa brought in her boyfriend Justin. And Lay invited Soyeon.”
“And you invited me,” Chanyeol said.
“Yeah. There were a few more, they didn’t quite vibe with us much, left after a while.”
“Justin said you brought someone else long ago,” Chanyeol said before he could stop himself. He really didn’t plan to ask, he didn’t want to overstep, especially after Lisa said they don’t talk about it. But he couldn’t help it. And judging by the stiffness of Baekhyun’s shoulders, he made a mistake. He tried to lessen the damage. “Did they leave as well?”
“Uh, yeah, we didn’t really have...he had a falling out with us. So we sort of stopped interacting.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.”
“Don’t be, he was a little bitch.”
Baekhyun didn’t say anything afterward, so Chanyeol decided to change the subject.
“So, you guys come here every week?”
“No, not really. Depends. If we decide to drink too much, we usually stay over and don’t go out. If there is something special going on, like the carnival a few weeks back, we usually go for a visit. Tonight was a special occasion, your initiation, and also, Lay missed the dinner, so Minseok wanted to bring him some food and cake.”
“My initiation,” the words finally registered. “Does that mean I’m part of the cult now?”
“It’s not a cult, don’t be dramatic,” Baekhyun laughed. “But yes, you’re part of it, which means you’ll be invited to all future dinners, unless you don’t want to be a participant, which is cool too. No pressure. But if you do decide to join, you might want to be more serious about the themes. Chen said Minseok is planning something big for the winter solstice, maybe a Greek Mythology theme. Dibs on Apollo, if that happens.”
“Okay.”
“You think we’re crazy.”
“I don’t think you’re crazy,” Chanyeol said honestly. Eccentric, yes. Not crazy, though. It was actually kinda interesting, fun too. And every one of these people that Chanyeol got to talk to seemed very intelligent so far. They had arguments about Euripides and Bernard Shaw while eating cake, and Chanyeol enjoyed it even though he couldn’t understand one bit what was going on.
“It’s a getaway,” Baekhyun asked as he watched his friends dance and laugh and make fun of each other. “This started as a sort of intervention, a gathering to talk out problems and be civil about it, have dinner, talk things out, have fun. And now it’s like we’re committed. I missed maybe two dinners since we started this last year, and both times I felt like crap afterwards. It’s become a confort.”
It reminded Chanyeol of family brunches on weekends, except there usually weren’t much comfort these days. But he understood the sentiment. And to be invited to be a part of it was a huge deal. To be invited by Baekhyun at that, who has not invited anyone except him and one other person, that person turning out to be not the friend they hoped for, Chanyeol felt some pressure about making a good impression just so Baekhyun won’t have a hard time with his friends.
“I hope you friends didn’t dislike me,” Chanyeol said.
“Oh, trust me, they liked you,” Baekhyun said. “They threatened to not let me in without you next time. It’s an empty threat, don’t worry. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”
Right. Well, now, Chanyeol sort of wanted to attend dinner next week. Maybe he can bring some of his famous savory dishes.
It should alarm Chanyeol that he was thinking about cooking for a dozen people just to attend a dinner so Baekhyun didn’t look bad to his friends. It should alarm him, but he liked spending time with them, with Baekhyun. Enough to dress up again and cook food.
Either something was definitely wrong with him, or that one kiss was getting to his head.
Ask him, a voice in his head screamed at him. Ask him!
But what would Baekhyun answer?
It was just to thank him for taking care of Baekhyun?
The kiss wasn’t that heated, if Chanyeol was being honest with himself. A chaste goodbye kiss. That tasted like strawberries.
“Chanyeol?” Baekhyun asked, and it looked like he’d been calling his name for a while now. “How much did you drink?” He laughed.
“Not much,” Chanyeol said.
“Your face looks pretty red, you sure you’re not drunk?”
“I’m sure,” Chanyeol wasn’t even tipsy. He’d just been daydreaming about a stupid kiss.
“Well, it’s pretty late. Everyone else is staying over so they’ll probably be here another hour or so. Do you want to stay?”
“Are you leaving?” Chanyeol asked and Baekhyun nodded. “You’re not staying over. Because of me?”
“No, I just like my bed,” Baekhyun said. “I can drop you off if you don’t want to stay here anymore.”
“Okay.”
Maybe Chanyeol was a tiny bit tipsy, that was the only reason he could come up with to explain why he was thinking about Baekhyun’s bed.
“Are you sure you’re sober enough to drive though?” Chanyeol asked when he could think straight again.
“Yeah, don’t worry, I just had one beer tonight, I don’t drink much. Lightweight.”
They said their goodbyes and walked over to the apartment to get the car. They were on the road when Chanyeol got a text from Sehun.
“Stay over at my place, Baek will let you in.”
For some reason, the text made Chanyeol incredibly angry. The nerve! Sehun barely responded to any of Chanyeol’s texts or calls the whole day, and then, he had the nerve to tell Chanyeol that he couldn’t stay at his own home because…
“Uh, not to sound rude, but would it be okay if I stayed over at your place tonight?”
“Your roommate and Sehun at it again?” Baekhyun laughed.
Chanyeol just sighed. He was getting too tired of Junmyeon and Sehun acting like teenagers. If they wanted to spend every night together, they might as well move in together and leave Chanyeol his meager place.
“Don’t worry, you can stay over.”
Chanyeol sighed again, for a different reason.

02. Window
Chanyeol never thought he'd be under someone's flat throwing tiny rocks at their window. Never in a million years did he imagine himself to be in this position. Sure he did some crazy things in life, but never something as cringe-inducing as this. In broad daylight too. Jesus.
"Hey!" someone called him and Chanyeol looked back to find Officer Joey looking at him with narrow eyes and creased brows. "You're the kid from last night, aren't you?"
"Hi, yeah," Chanyeol said awkwardly.
"Why are you throwing stones?"
"No one's answering the buzzer?"
"Ever heard of calling?"
Yeah well, Joey, I would, but I have their phone with me. And while we're talking, Joey, fuck you. God, Chanyeol wanted to scream at the ridiculousness of it.
Chanyeol never would have forgotten to return Baekhyun's phone that he pocketed in case of an emergency just that morning before taking him to get stitches. Never would have under normal circumstances. But getting a too sweet goodbye strawberry kiss was not a normal circumstance. Chanyeol could feel his ears getting warm and red, and Joey was still there staring at him.
"I have something that I desperately need to give Baekhyun," Chanyeol said. Judging by the familiar way Baekhyun had talked to Joey before, maybe Joey would leave him alone if he realized Chanyeol wasn't a threat to Baekhyun. "Calling didn't help, and I'm pretty sure Baekhyun really needs this. So, yeah…"
Honestly, Chanyeol would have just found Sehun and given the phone to him and been done with it. But Sehun was MIA with Junmyeon. And Chanyeol hadn't had a chance until this late in the afternoon to come by and hand over the phone. But he'd be lying if he said he kinda maybe didn't want to check if Baekhyun was alright. Oh God, what if he's lying unconscious on the floor again?
"At this hour, he's probably at some rehearsal, hop in," Joey gestured towards the passenger side.
Chanyeol was having a hard time digesting what was happening. How did he end up riding shotgun in a police vehicle? How did Joey know so much about Baekhyun's schedule when even Sehun was of no help? What the hell was going on with Chanyeol's life, good lord?
Joey dropped at one of the smaller auditoriums east side of the campus. Chanyeol had never ventured this way, never had any cause to.
"Tell him I said hi," Joey smirked before leaving Chanyeol there. He probably got off on how shook Chanyeol was.
The huge double doors opened up to a lobby. The signs said dressing rooms were to the left, and to the right were the rows of identical doors leading to the actual auditorium. For audiences. Chanyeol decided it was best to check there first since he could hear voices and music coming from one of the half opened doors.
The only auditorium Chanyeol had ever been to on campus was on the north end, the one where the big seminars are usually held. This one was different, definitely not for academic or corporate lectures. The lights, the stage, even the seating was different. This was made for performing musicals like the one a dozen or so people were rehearsing.
"Oh woe, to be trapped in this age…" a woman wailed dramatically while lying flat on the stage.
"Oh, what is this I see! Some faerie-like creature come for me?"
Someone sang, another voice joined with a deep baritone that sounded somewhat like Baekhyun, but Chanyeol had never heard him sing before.
"Hello hello, fair man," someone said.
"Ah! My prince has come to save me, joy be!" shouted a guy as large as Chanyeol but lankier.
That was when he realized they were all talking about him. A bunch of theatre kids finding a new person interrupting their rehearsal, of course they would be dramatic about it. What did Chanyeol expect?
"How can I help you, sir?" a brunette girl asked with a fake British accent.
Someone started singing about waiting for him all her life as he went down the stairs towards the stage where he could spot a guy with a bandaged hand and hoped it was Baekhyun. He was wearing a hat so Chanyeol couldn't clearly see the cotton candy fluff on his head.
A guy in suspenders and lipstick stopped him by starting to dance suggestively and singing a Burlesque song. God this bunch was loud. Two others came around him, the brunette and another woman with red and white streaks in her black hair and the three started a whole number with impressive impromptu harmonies and suggestive body rolls.
"Chanyeol?" he heard Baekhyun's surprised voice from the stage.
There he was, hat in hand, pink hair almost glowing under the harsh light of the stage, eyes squinting to see Chanyeol awkwardly standing as three people sang some jazz song and moved their pelvis in a way that Chanyeol would rather not witness at the moment.
"Hey, hi," he used Baekhyun's interruption as his getaway card and moved around the dancing trio. "Sorry for barging in like this, just wanted to return this."
Baekhyun jumped straight down from the stage seeing his phone. Chanyeol was momentarily shocked, and the worry he felt in that instant thinking something bad might happen to Baekhyun jumping down from so high nearly rendered him speechless.
"Oh my God, thank you! I've been looking everywhere for it. I really thought I lost it during my steakout yesterday."
Stakeout?
"Nah I took it with me when I took you to the pharmacy, forgot about it afterwards."
"Well, thank you for bringing it back all the way here."
And then Baekhyun was hugging him, arms around Chanyeol's shoulders, hot breath on the side of his neck, Baekhyun stood on tiptoes and Chanyeol didn't know what to do with his own hands.
"Why can't I get a man like that?" a girl sighed from one side.
"Wait, is that the guy? He really carried Baek… I mean I can see he's got…"
"Holy shit, he's real?!"
"Of course he's real, Minseok," Baekhyun said and he let go of Chanyeol.
"Uh, I should go…" Chanyeol said awkwardly.
"What? Wait, I haven't done anything to thank you," Baekhyun said.
But you did, Chanyeol thought. You kissed me. That was a thank you, no? What was the kiss about? Why the fuck did Baekhyun kiss him? God, Chanyeol was going out of his mind trying to figure it out.
"That's okay, you don't have to…"
"Nonsense, let me just get changed and then I'll treat you to something delicious."
"Hopefully not something too delicious," someone said.
"Don't forget about the party tonight," someone else said.
But Chanyeol couldn't focus on all the things everyone was saying. He was finally focused on Baekhyun's outfit. Suspenders, a dirty-white pirate shirt tucked haphazardly into leather pants.
"Be a little more discreet ogling his ass, will you?" The guy with pretty eyes, Minseok whispered near and Chanyeol nearly choked on his spit.
"Oh leave him be," Another guy, the one who was singing with Baekhyun said, he had a cat-like smile. "He's too whipped anyway, let him enjoy."
Jesus. Chanyeol wanted out of here. It wasn't that these guys were half bad. Quite the opposite, Chanyeol found them sort of endearing with the way they passionately rehearsed their lines, danced and sang even without an instructor guiding them, on a Saturday. But taking jabs at Chanyeol and laughing at his "whipped" nature was unsettling him. He was not whipped for Baekhyun, he was just still stuck on a stupid kiss.
Chanyeol sighed, he couldn't blame anyone. Not these guys, they were just having fun. If anyone, Chanyeol should blame Sehun. Now that guy was whipped, for Junmyeon. A little too much. If it wasn't for Sehun, Chanyeol wouldn't have been temporarily homeless and had to spend the night at Baekhyun's.
"Stop teasing him, people. See you later," Baekhyun sang as he came back dressed in a baggy sweater and loose camo pants tucked into his boots. He tugged Chanyeol's shirt sleeve to follow him out.
"Don't forget to bring dessert," someone shouted.
"Bring Prince Charming as well, while you're at it!"
"Sorry about that, they tend to be a little rowdy during the weekend," Baekhyun said.
They sat facing each other in a booth at a quaint little cafÊ/bakery just outside of their main campus. Chanyeol had never even noticed it, but Baekhyun said they have the best baked goods he ever had.
"You don't hate sweets, do you?" Baekhyun asked, a little alarmed.
Chanyeol looked at him like he was crazy, thinking back on how he was seconds away from sucking the taste of freaking strawberry milk from Baekhyun's tongue. Chanyeol coughed and shook his head. He was fine with sweets. Their coffee and chocolate covered donuts came soon after. Chanyeol had to admit they were good, had the potential to ruin his body and all his hard work, but he could indulge on occasion.
"How did you find me anyway?" Baekhyun asked while licking chocolate off his fingers.
"Joey," Chanyeol said and tried not to stare. "I was actually at your apartment, he found me and said you'd be at rehearsal. He even gave me a ride. He said hi."
"Ah, makes sense."
"How are you so close to the officer, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Oh he used to date my mom, didn't work out though. But I like him, we occasionally meet up because he has two dogs and I'm desperately trying to convince him to let me adopt them."
The way he said it made Chanyeol laugh. And that was surprising because Chanyeol doesn't usually feel this comfortable with people so quickly. Well, maybe it had something to do with last night's fiasco. And the kiss. Fuck.
Chanyeol wanted to ask about it, so bad. But it felt weird. And awkward. And Chanyeol wasn't sure he could ask with a straight face. It bothered him. Not in a negative way. More like, he couldn't figure it out and it was irritating. It was like not knowing what that sound was at the back of a well-produced song and obsessing over it for days and even weeks until finally it was clear.
"What are you doing tonight?" Baekhyun asked.
"Uh, nothing much, I guess," Chanyeol sipped his coffee.
"How do you feel about a social gathering? Dinner will be on me."
"The party your friends were talking about?"
"It's not much of a party, really. Just some friends hanging out together."
"Well, I don't think I'd fit in, and I don't wanna be a bother among friends," Chanyeol said.
"Well, as humble as that sounds, I insist. And you heard Jongin, they want you there. They wouldn't have asked so directly in front of you if they didn't."
Was it worth it? Should Chanyeol give up another night at his apartment to spend time with Baekhyun and his eccentric friends?
"Wear something white," Baekhyun said.
"Wait, I haven't decided whether I'd go."
"I've decided for you, it'll be fun. I'll pick you up at 8."
"How's your hand?" Chanyeol decided to change the topic. Maybe he can get away with the party thing later with a better excuse.
"Hurts a little, but good otherwise. Nearly got plastered under a ladder while rehearsing, but narrowly escaped."
"Does that often happen?" Chanyeol was more alarmed than he probably should have been.
"Nah, I just got distracted. But anyway, I gotta go make a cake. Oh hey, I should have your number."
Half an hour later, Chanyeol was shifting through his wardrobe looking for white clothes. He had none. He regretted ever agreeing to go to the party, which, by the way, he never explicitly agreed to.
His phone buzzed with a text from "Kyoong", Baekhyun had insisted, with an impromptu photo of his doing a finger heart, that that be his nickname on Chanyeol's phone. God knows why Chanyeol agreed.
"Be there in ten." The text read. Great. No way to back out now.
"I kind of have an issue." Chanyeol texted back. It felt like a weak excuse to get out of going to the party, even though this was a genuine issue.
And then Baekhyun was calling him and Chanyeol nearly dropped his phone. He finally saw the pout Baekhyun sneakily did which wasn't noticeable with the small icon. Jesus.
"Hello?"
"Hey, sorry, started driving so I couldn't text back. Don't worry, Bluetooth, and I'm almost at your place. What's the issue?"
"I'm going to hang up and we can talk when you get here."
"Wai-"
Chanyeol did as he said and waited until Baekhyun was knocking at his door.
"Okay, glad that you're concerned about me dying on the road but never hang up on me, bothers the hell out of me. So, now, what's the issue?"
"I don't have anything white," Chanyeol said.
"Your roommate? Borrow something of his."
"I don't know if you met Junmyeon or not, but we're sort of not the same size."
"Well, I don't think Sehun owns anything remotely classy either."
That's when Chanyeol finally registered what Baekhyun was wearing. A high collared Victorian shirt with ruffles on the sleeves and neck, a few streaks of shimmering thread on his chest and shoulders. A corset. Loose breeches tucked into knee-high boots. All white.
"You look beautiful," Chanyeol said before he could stop himself.
"Why, thank you, dear sir. I spent hours trying to fit this just right. Et voila."
"You made this?"
"Tweaked. I'm no seamstress. But I can use a needle."
Right. Of course. Chanyeol should stop staring at Baekhyun's shiny cheeks that matched the color of his cotton candy pink hair. Get a grip.
"You said classy outfit, right? I have all-black fits, recital clothes."
"Ah, that would create quite the buzz, but I like the idea. Show me," Baekhyun said. And then he neatly sat down on Chanyeol's bed and crossed his legs, waiting for Chanyeol to appear in his black attire.
Right. Well, Chanyeol wasn't ready to strip in front of this Victorian ghost boy yet. Yet? Jesus Christ, his mind was well on its way to the gutter.
"I'll be right back," Chanyeol took the shirt and pants from his drawers and went to the bathroom to change.
He came back to soft music playing on his speakers. His music.
"Sorry, I was snooping around and found your disks. You really composed these?"
"Uh, yeah, last term."
"I need to get this on my phone. Later. Well, you look pretty."
Chanyeol felt his ears go red.
"Are you wearing contacts?"
"Yeah."
"You weren't wearing them last night, you wore your glasses. That's why I couldn't recognize you right away. Well. Mind switching now? It'll fit better."
It was ridiculous how Chanyeol just switched from contacts to glasses without protests.
"And I love this collar," Baekhyun walked up to him and undid the first two buttons from his half-collar. "Hmm, better. You have any accessories?"
"Uh…"
"My friends are very serious about weekend parties, you'll be surprised by the amount of effort they put in. They'll appreciate it if you showed you cared too. But no pressure, I mean, don't make yourself uncomfortable or anything. You already look really good so I don't think you need to worry, plus I'm sure everyone would just appreciate you being there…"
Baekhyun was babbling and it was so adorable, Chanyeol was shamelessly just staring without being the least bit discreet about it.
He ended up wearing the silver necklace his sister got him last year on his birthday. Half a heart, the other half was on Yuna's wrist.
They arrived at Chen's apartment in town. It was… not what Chanyeol expected, at all. Chen, the one with the catlike smile, wore a Peter Pan outfit, all white, with white antlers on his head instead of the hat. He padded barefoot as he welcomed Baekhyun and Chanyeol inside. Some of the others were familiar faces Chanyeol had seen earlier at the auditorium. A Medusa with white dreadlocks and a white snakeskin-like dress contrasting her brilliant ebony skin. A Lucifer in a white suit and tarred feet. Two Victorian ghosts much like Baekhyun but very differently dressed. A guy dressed as honest-to-God Edgar Allan Poe with a fake moustache, looking ready to attend his own wedding in a three piece embroidered suit. The woman on his side dressed as a bride, probably the cousin. And then there was Minseok serving wine wearing a white fur coat and the crown of a king.
Well. This was. Something.
"I should kick you out for not wearing even a thread of white," Minseok said. "But you look good, and you're carrying the cake, so I'll overlook this time."
"Don't mind him, you look perfect," Chen laughed with genuine delight. Everyone else agreed.
"Help me with the cake," Baekhyun gestured towards the kitchen with his head and Chanyeol followed.
Baekhyun had made two cakes but decorating them and bringing them over would have been a disaster. So he put everything in containers, the cakes, the fondant, buttercream, chocolate and other decorations, and strapped them to the back seat of his car. This party was no joke.
Chanyeol set down the containers on the kitchen counter, which was already full of dishes being prepared and ready to be set on the table.
"I feel like I should have brought something," Chanyeol said to Baekhyun.
"Well, at least you brought your wits," the tall lanky actor dressed like the ghost of Monte Christo said as he handed a glass of white wine to Chanyeol.
"You having flashbacks of your initiation, Jongin?" Chen laughed as he stirred some kind of soup in a pot.
"Jesus, don't remind me," Jongin shuddered and went back to sit with the others.
Baekhyun layered and put cream on the cake. Then fondant. Then carefully crafted cream flowers, roses and white chocolate feathers. Chanyeol stood there in awe, occasionally handing over whatever Baekhyun asked for and watched the cakes turn into works of art. How? One man. How?
One man who can sing and act and probably dance too, can bake and decorate cakes, sew and fit his own medieval style clothes, and kiss.
This party was a bad idea. Chanyeol was glad he didn't miss it. Getting to know Baekhyun's friends and how Baekhyun acted around them was a serious thing. Chanyeol paid attention to every conversation and voiceless interaction. He really should be a bit more careful. He couldn't help looking at Baekhyun every chance he got.
The internal conflict Chanyeol was having was driving him crazy.
What was happening?

01. Door
Chanyeol curses and wonders what he did to be locked out of his own apartment as the door slams on his face. In truth, it wasn't his fault. How was he to know that taking his roommate to a party would lead to him falling for Chanyeol's best friend. Which would lead to steamy make out sessions, and possibly more, in his apartment. Resulting in him being kicked out for the night.
Chanyeol tried not to think about the mess Junmyeon and Sehun would probably make. God, they better clean up afterwards.
He sighed and looked at the keys in his hand. Not his keys. Sehun had tossed those before shutting the door, telling Chanyeol to sleep at Sehun's place for the night. Jeez, a little warning would have been nice! Chanyeol didn't even get to unplug his phone from the charger. His laptop and notes are still open on his desk. This was ridiculous!
At least it was Friday. And Sehun did say his roommate was out on a date. So Chanyeol will have the place to himself. Since Sehun and Baekhyun even got a TV in their apartment, Chanyeol can just binge shitty soap operas and pass the night. Great plan, sure. Not like Chanyeol had a life or anything.
The walk to Sehun's place was short, and the night wasn't too warm or cold for Chanyeol to feel uncomfortable in his bed clothes. Jesus. He was wearing his sweats and an oversized sweater. He would've been embarrassed if people saw him like this in the daytime. Thankfully it was late enough in the night that not many were out and about. He felt like he was the one making the walk of shame back to his apartment. Ironic, since he was single, too busy to be in a relationship with anyone, and hadn't decided whether he just didn't like anyone all that much or if he was plainly aro. Not something he wanted to think about tonight.
He walked up the stairs to the third floor and went down the hall to Sehun's door. Chanyeol had been here multiple times since Sehun had moved in, but he never stayed over at night. Mainly because of Baekhyun. To be completely honest, Chanyeol was a little afraid of Sehun's flatmate. He wasn't sure what it was, but that tiny boy with cotton candy hair always made Chanyeol nervous.
Well, at least Baekhyun was out tonight. And judging by the way Sehun explained it, Baekhyun was unlikely to return until the next day. Chanyeol would be long gone by then.
Sehun's apartment was posh, spacious and modern, unlike Chanyeol and Junmyeon's tiny cramped flat with just two room and a tiny kitchen. The lights were on. Maybe it was a rich people thing, leaving the light on. Who cared about bills? Or maybe Sehun was too whipped and crazy for a fuck that he didn't even bother turning off the switches.
Jesus. Chanyeol sounded angry even to himself. He wasn't actually that angry, just a bit irritated to be collateral to other people's sexual activities.
Barely two steps in and he stopped dead, caught in a stare with a green faced guy standing in front on the kitchen with a bowl of soup. Before Chanyeol could do anything, the guy screamed and stumbled back, hitting the stool with his leg and splashing hot soup all over himself as he lost his grip on the bowl. Chanyeol hurried towards him to help, but it only backfired. The guy, Baekhyun, judging by the hair, became more agitated and fell back right where the bowl had crashed and broken.
"Motherfucker, ow!" Baekhyun cursed, forgetting for a moment his terror of seeing another person in his apartment.
Chanyeol's fear came true as Baekhyun inspected the pain in his hand and found a large cut, blood oozing down his arm. Chanyeol was there just in time to catch the pink haired boy before Baekhyun cursed again and fainted at the sight of blood.
Jesus, how did a lazy evening in Chanyeol's own apartment turn into spilled soup, bloody wounds and an unconscious twenty-two year old in his arms?
It took him two hours to get it all cleaned up. He debated calling Sehun, but he was probably too busy in the throes of passion to pick up the phone anyway, so Chanyeol decided to tackle one pressing issue at a time.
Baekhyun's cut wasn't deep, but it was long enough to cause alarm. Poor guy must've slid his hand right over the broken ceramic. Thankfully the soup wasn't scalding, not hot enough to bruise. Chanyeol decided the leather couch can weather some sticky chicken soup and carried Baekhyun over to lay him down. He found the first aid kit in the bathroom cabinet and went on to clean and dress the wound before Baekhyun woke up. Chanyeol never would have thought he'd be the kind of guy to lose his shit at the sight of blood. But, oh well, everyone had their kryptonite.
Cleaning up the broken bowl and soup was a bit harder, Chanyeol had to look for missing pieces of ceramic that got knocked away out of sight. It could cause more problems later on. By the time he was done, it was past midnight, and he was hungry enough to indulge in cooking himself a quick snack. Baekhyun was still unconscious on the sofa with his injured hand propped up over his head, breathing normally. He probably didn't get to have dinner if the soup was it. Chanyeol decided to make use of the ingredients in their fridge and make something for both of them.
"Ah fuck," Baekhyun cursed the moment he woke up. "This is so not my day."
"Hey," Chanyeol said quietly. "Don't freak out. I'm Chanyeol, Sehun's friend, remember?"
"Jesus, you could've knocked maybe?"
"Sorry," Chanyeol did realize he shouldn't have barged in like that. But in his defense, Sehun had told him nobody would be home. "I had Sehun's keys, he's spending the night at my place so, he said I could stay here, and that you'd be out. I didn't know you'd be at home."
"Right. Wait, why is he at your place?"
"Uh, my roommate, Junmyeon... "
"Good God, stop. No more. I've heard enough about Junmyeon this, Junmyeon that. No more. Let them fuck it out. I need a break."
Chanyeol agreed. It was slightly getting on his nerves as well. He went back to his meal, sitting on the floor and watching the muted sitcom.
"Oh, Uh, did you…?" Baekhyun sat up and fumbled with his bandaged hand.
"Oh yeah," Chanyeol looked back at him. "Sorry about that, I really didn't mean to startle you. I cleaned it up, the kitchen too, so don't worry about it. And, the cut isn't deep as far as I can tell, but you probably should get it checked out tomorrow, might require stitches."
"Just my luck," Baekhyun sighed. "You said you cleaned the kitchen?"
"Yeah, didn't want any more accidents happening tonight. Also, there's some stir fried rice and chicken if you want. I was hungry so..." Chanyeol pointed at his own food.
"You cleaned, and you cooked," Baekhyun repeated like he couldn't wrap his head around the facts. "Please switch places with Sehun and move in with me."
Chanyeol laughed, if only. His meager job wasn't even remotely enough to afford all this luxury.
"Alright, I'm gonna...I'm gonna go clean up. Jesus, what a night to do some beauty care. I've probably aged five years, a lot of good this mask will do me. And ugh, I smell like chicken, probably taste like it too."
Chanyeol couldn't help but laugh as Baekhyun slowly went to his room down the hallway grumbling about his bad luck. That was when Chanyeol realized that this was probably the first time he was ever alone with Baekhyun, and not once did he feel nervous or unsettled. He laughed, Baekhyun was actually funny. Maybe it wouldn't be that bad spending a night here like this. Granted, he could've done without the mess and injury.
Chanyeol finished his meal and cleaned up the leather sofa where Baekhyun had laid unconscious by the time the other boy came freshly showered and a little out of it.
"Uh, not to sound demanding or anything, but," Baekhyun sounded a little nervous. "Do you mind cleaning the bandage? It got wet and there's a red patch and...yeah."
Chanyeol tried not to laugh because it wasn't actually funny, it was just too adorable. Never did he imagine Byun Baekhyun, the boisterous theatre major around campus to be lightheaded because of blood. He looked too cute with his wet hair and too big T-shirt and loose shorts, holding up his injured arm and desperately trying not to look at the wound.
"Sit down, I'll get it cleaned up," Chanyeol said, taking out the aid kit again.
"You cleaned the couch," Baekhyun observed as he sat down, momentarily forgetting all about his injury and sounding surprised.
Chanyeol didn't bother replying, he focused on the task at hand.
"Close your eyes," he said and Baekhyun shut his eyes instantly. Button-like nose scrunched up, face a little red from rubbing off the mask, hand trembling outstretched.
Chanyeol sat on the floor and changed the dressing. Then he put things away neatly and brought Baekhyun the meal he had prepared.
"You can use your left hand, right?" Chanyeol asked.
Baekhyun gaped at the food, spoon clumsily held in his left grip. He nodded minutely and Chanyeol decided to focus on the TV screen.
"You can turn on the sound now, I'm wide awake," Baekhyun said. "Sorry for the drama, but then again, I'm an actor, what did you expect?"
"You're majoring in Theatre, right?" Chanyeol asked in conversation as Baekhyun nodded. "What do you do when you have to act with props like blood?"
"Well," Baekhyun scrunched up his red nose and Chanyeol had to bite his cheek to not smile. "It's not a big deal since I know it's fake. But when it's real…"
"That's okay," Chanyeol felt the sudden urge to reassure the guy. "I don't think there's anything to worry about, give it a week and it'll heal properly."
"Thanks," Baekhyun avoided eye contact. "For patching me up, twice. And for the meal."
"No worries. I'm sorry again for walking in on you like this. Giving you such a scare. Sehun told me you went on a date and won't be home tonight."
Baekhyun made a face. "Yeah, that…"
Chanyeol guessed it didn't go well. But he didn't want to ask, it was private.
"I didn't show," Baekhyun said.
He stood his date up? That's… a bit cruel, Chanyeol thought.
"No, that's a lie," Baekhyun sighed. "I showed up two hours early and sat watch from a distance and I was right, some guys just wanted to mess with me. So I came home and decided to pamper myself."
Chanyeol really wanted to know who those guys were. The anger he felt wasn't new, and he wasn't surprised how much he hated whoever those people were who wanted to mess with Baekhyun. Chanyeol hated guys like that who only preyed on other people thinking they were weak. Sure, Baekhyun was maybe small compared to a lot of the guys around campus, and his sassy attitude and cotton candy hair would hurt a lot fragile egos, but Chanyeol really struggled to understand why people would want to hurt a complete stranger.
"Do you know those guys?" Chanyeol asked even as he tried to hold himself back.
"Yeah, don't worry about it, I took care of them. They're probably sitting in a cell for the night. I reported them."
Chanyeol felt relieved. Though guys like that deserved more than a night in a cell, at least nobody got hurt today. Or, at least not by them. He felt a pang of guilt thinking he was the reason Baekhyun got hurt. Jeez, why couldn't Sehun just wait until daytime to have his way with Junmyeon?
"You always like this, a neat freak?" Baekhyun asked when Chanyeol grabbed his empty plate and went on to clean it at the sink.
Heat in his cheeks probably was evidence enough that he was blushing. Chanyeol's inability to leave anything unclean or untidy was not necessarily a problem, he didn't think he was obsessive about it. But it did stand out sometimes. Especially while living with Junmyeon who was not the neatest or tidiest person in the world.
"Sorry, habit," Chanyeol said.
"Oh, don't be sorry at all. I haven't done a single thing since you came. Please teach some manners to Sehun."
"He's a little beyond help."
"Unfortunate."
Baekhyun bid him goodnight, giving him free reign of Sehun's bed as he went to his own. Chanyeol never made it to the bed, however. He was dozing while sitting on the ground with his head back on the couch when cold fingers shook him awake.
It took him a while to wake and sit up properly, not knowing what was going on since it was still pitch dark with only the light of the TV.
Then he registered Baekhyun's strained voice. He was alert immediately, remembering everything that happened last night.
"Uh, I think… I got hurt… in my sleep… it's... "
The wound was bleeding, blood seeped through the hem of the bandage and down Baekhyun's arm. Maybe the wound was deeper than Chanyeol thought.
Before he could say anything, Baekhyun fainted right on top of him like a sack of potatoes. He was lighter than Chanyeol thought, which he hadn't exactly noticed hours before when Baekhyun first fainted.
Chanyeol laid the guy down on the sofa again and reached for his phone, only then remembering that his phone was back in his apartment. Christ.
Chanyeol quickly walked to Baekhyun's room. His phone was password locked, but Chanyeol could still use it in case of emergency. He grabbed the first pair of shoes he thought would fit Baekhyun and slid them into unconscious feet.
"Baekhyun? Baek... " waking the guy wasn't very successful. He was probably too tired, and the blood loss was probably not helping. Damn guy was too pale to have much blood in him anyway.
Chanyeol knew he was being stupid. Baekhyun probably just needed a full night's rest and a visit to the doctor's in the morning. But the guilt was eating at Chanyeol.
The pharmacy was maybe seven minutes away. Double, if Chanyeol had to carry an unconscious Baekhyun all the way there. But that was still better than sitting here and not doing anything. What if there was a piece of ceramic stuck in the wound that Chanyeol hadn't been able to clean?
He roused Baekhyun enough to carry him on his back and make sure he wouldn't fall off, and then he locked the doors and headed out.
"The wound nicked a vein, nothing big, just needed a few stitches," the pharmacist said while performing the sutures.
Chanyeol was a little relieved that Baekhyun was awake again. Sitting with his eyes closed, his uninjured hand gripping the packet of strawberry milk he had requested and humming some song to distract himself. At least he'll be fine.
Chanyeol, however, couldn't shake off the weird gaze of the pharmacist and his assistant at the counter. They looked at Chanyeol the same way people looked at murder suspects. He tried to not show his nervousness.
That worked until an officer walked in purposefully and stood right in front of, sizing Chanyeol up.
"You okay, son?" the officer asked Baekhyun directly.
"Oh, Joey! What are you doing here?" Baekhyun asked. Gone was the faintness of his voice and dullness of his eyes. He was again distracted from his own distress as he focused on anything but his injury.
"Byun! I really didn't think you were the one they called me about, I got those bastards you told me about. I didn't think they hurt you!"
Someone called the officer. Probably the assistant pharmacist. Good God, they probably thought Chanyeol purposely hurt Baekhyun and brought him here at four in the morning. Jesus Christ, what the hell was happening?
"Oh no, this was at home," Baekhyun said casually. Almost cheerfully.
Chanyeol nearly swallowed his own tongue as three pairs of eyes honed in on him and Baekhyun remained oblivious, or pretended to. That was it, Chanyeol was going to jail.
"I slipped in the kitchen, got soup all over me. Dreadful thing. And then I managed to fall on my ass and scrape my hand on a broken bowl!" Baekhyun summarized it like telling a story.
"I'd say this is more than a scrape," the pharmacist grumbled. "If you hadn't bandaged it properly, you would have lost a lot of blood by now."
"Well it's all thanks to Chanyeol. I can't even look at blood, makes me faint. He cleaned up the wound and everything. Even carried me all the way, can you believe it?"
No, they could not. But at least they didn't think Chanyeol knifed Baekhyun's hand himself. That was good enough for now.
"I'd be lying in my own pool of blood, dead, if it weren't for Chanyeol!"
He probably wouldn't be hurt in the first place if it weren't for Chanyeol. But nobody needed to know that. He looked up at the others and they seemed convinced Chanyeol wasn't the bad guy here.
This is why Chanyeol had always been nervous around Baekhyun. Or, to be more precise, nervous because of other people due to Baekhyun's presence. This guy could make friends with patrol officers and pharmacists and make them feel concerned for him in a heartbeat. That was some power to have over people. Not saying Baekhyun was manipulative, on the contrary, he was sweet and charming and that won hearts.
"You sure you don't want me to drop you off?" Joey said as he got into his patrol car.
"Nah, it's okay, I think I need to walk it off, have some fresh air to feel a bit better."
"Alright," Joey eyed Chanyeol one last time and then smiled at Baekhyun. "Call me if there's any trouble." And then he was off.
Jesus, that was nerve wracking. Chanyeol desperately wanted to go back to his own cramped tiny apartment with the partitioned room he shared with Junmyeon and sleep in his own bed.
"You really didn't have to carry me all the way here, did you?" Baekhyun asked as they walked back to the apartment.
"Didn't wanna risk it, and it was a short distance."
"Short!" Baekhyun laughed. "I can't decide whether I should be glad you were there or me mad at you for causing the accident in the first place."
"Sor…" Chanyeol was going to apologize again but Baekhyun cut him off.
"I'm not mad, don't worry about it. It was just an accident. I'd blame Sehun but it was my choice to come back home, my choice to go on a date with a douche bag in the first place, their fault for being douchebags and waiting to gang up on me… what's the point of blaming. We're all still alive and well, let's just enjoy the moment."
It wasn't such a bad philosophy, especially at nearly half past five with the sun coming up on the horizon and cold breeze sending mild chills through the body. Chanyeol looked at Baekhyun when he realized the boy was only wearing a thin, oversized T-shirt. He should've put a jacket on him before rushing him to the pharmacy.
"Let's hurry back," Chanyeol said.
"What's the rush, let me enjoy the cool weather."
"You'll catch a cold."
Chanyeol didn't realize Baekhyun had stopped walking until he was a few steps ahead without the pink head near his shoulder. He looked back to find Baekhyun gawking at him with his mouth open.
"What, what's wrong?" Chayeol quickly turned back. "You okay? Feeling lightheaded?"
"Uh…" Baekhyun stuttered. "Yeah, I think so. Think you can carry me the rest of the way?"
"Yeah sure, get on my back, it'll be easier," Chanyeol crouched down and waited for him to lean forward.
Even after seconds, Chanyeol didn't feel an extra body on him. He turned his head and looked up. Baekhyun was still staring at him open-mouthed.
"Baekhyun?"
"Hm what?"
"Get on?"
"Oh yeah, never turning down a ride," Baekhyun said as he leaned his weight on Chanyeol and grabbed his shoulders while locking his legs around Chanyeol's waist.
Chanyeol faintly wondered whether Baekhyun was joking or not, faking his lightheadedness. But he didn't think too much about it, the apartment was barely five minutes away. It was good exercise anyway.
"Jesus, what do you do to become this giant ball of goodness with muscles?"
Chanyeol nearly avoided stumbling on the stairs as he went up to the apartment. Giant ball of goodness? What?
"You can put me down now," Baekhyun whispered, breath fanning the shell of Chanyeol's ear and almost making him lose his grip on Baekhyun's thighs.
Chanyeol dropped Baekhyun safely on his feet and handed him Sehun's keys. Baekhyun gladly opened the door and walked in.
"I think I'll head back now," Chanyeol said from the threshold.
"Oh, isn't it too early?" Baekhyun looked back tilting his head.
He looked less pale now, maybe the sugar of the strawberry milk helped, or maybe the walk. Baekhyun looked good, not sick. Better. Pale pink hair all ruffled, clothes swallowing his thin frame, shorts and boots looking adorably comical with his bed shirt. Chanyeol was staring.
"No, Junmyeon usually gets up by now, I can catch him if I go now before he starts his morning run."
"Shame," Baekhyun said. "Well, if you must go."
Chanyeol didn't know what to do when Baekhyun kissed him full on the mouth. He tasted sweet like strawberry. Lips soft like candy. Chanyeol hardly brought up a hand, fingertips grazing Baekhyun's angular jaw when he suddenly pulled away, leaving Chanyeol gasping and gaping at the shorter guy.
"Thanks for the rescue!" Baekhyun laughed. His cheeks soft and glowing in the rising sun.
Chanyeol didn't have time to react until the apartment door was being shut. For the second time in less than 8 hours, Chanyeol was standing in front of a closed door and desperately questioning his life. What just happened?
