Hi everyone,
I recently finished reading The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, and wow, what an emotional rollercoaster! It’s so much more than a simple love story—it’s a tale of obsession, longing, mystery, and the complexity of human emotions.
What stood out to me the most was Erik, the Phantom himself. He’s such a fascinating character! On one hand, he’s brilliant and incredibly talented, creating music and architecture that are practically magical. But on the other, his pain and isolation have turned him into someone terrifying and destructive. It’s hard not to feel sympathy for him despite his darker side.
Christine and Raoul’s relationship is also interesting to unpack. Christine is torn between fear, pity, and perhaps a hint of fascination for the Phantom, while Raoul represents safety and the world above. Their dynamic kept me hooked, especially during the more intense moments like the masquerade ball and the final confrontation.
And let’s not forget the setting! The Paris Opera House feels like a character in its own right—so atmospheric and mysterious. Leroux’s descriptions made me feel like I was walking through its shadowy corridors and hidden passageways.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! Did you feel sorry for the Phantom, or did his actions cross the line for you? How do you interpret Christine’s feelings toward him? And if you’ve seen the stage adaptation or movie, how do you think they compare to the book?
Looking forward to hearing your opinions! 🎶
