Sweet trope. Painful trope. Happy ending. Sad ending. Hurt/comfort even angst. MCD or both die. Silly or serious.

It won't be out of line from their dynamic in original manga.

I recently watching Naruto Shippuden, Naruto and Sasuke are soooo gaaayyyyy

Oh yeah and for some reason Sasuke is Naruto's high school teacher and shit goes horribly wrong and then 7 years later they can't stop flirting with each other??" If the answer is yes, then look no further:

After receiving a wedding invitation from an old friend, Sasuke returns to his hometown to confront a past he has spent the last seven years running from. Sasunaru Fic Recs

1. Before Today is Over by oshit, T-rated, 12k

Given summary: Above him, Sasuke leans over the edge of the pier to watch. Naruto hears him laugh and even with his face draped in shadow, he can imagine Sasuke’s cheshire grin, eyes crinkling with mirth. He feels Sasuke smiling at him. Naruto would pluck every star from the heavens to keep that feeling.

My summary: post-war fic with getting together, ft. letter writing and a day spent in a seaside town

2. Homesick for a Mountain’s Song by kintou, M-rated, 51k

Given Summary: Sasuke tries to get away from the world by buying an abandoned house on a mountain. Naruto, tired from his long days in Konoha, gets a little too excited about growing vegetables in Sasuke’s garden. 

Notes Summary: This story will mainly be Fluff or Hurt/Comfort. Just boys being soft on top of a mountain. There will probably be some dealing with trauma going on, since living on top of a mountain gives a man a lot of time to think. Anyway, I’m just a sucker for farmfics, and I think stoic Sasuke would fit in very well with all of these rough farmers.

3. Two Moons by iluxia, M-rated, 11k 

Given summary: Paths diverge after the Fourth War, in this new world Naruto works hard to build. He holds his highest dreams within his hands, but is he happy? [ Picks up post-Kaguya, some elements of Boruto & post-700 but not entirely adherent.] 

My summary: post-canon fic where Naruto at long last discovers what (who) truly makes him happy, and consequently has a midlife crisis over it, fix-it fic

4. Syzygy by glassedplanets, T-rated, 31k 

Given summary: In which Sasuke comes home, an errand needs to be run, several people tell him things, and he realizes just what home really is, for him. 

Tags for my summary: Reunions, Homecoming, Canon Divergence, Not Epilogue Compliant, Post-Chapter 699 (Naruto), Fluff, Mutual Pining, Happy Ending

5. Kizuna Hikari by YoungAndOverIntelligent, M-rated, 204k 

Given Summary: The only reason Sasuke keeps coming back to Konoha is because of that mattress. The bed is his only respite. And perhaps the dumbass who owns said bed might be worth it, too. 

Or, another canon divergence 699 that showers Sasuke with too much (deserved) love and attention that we all need for these unprecedented times. Title means “Bonded Light”. It’ll make sense when you’re about 100K in 

My summary: There was only one bed, chakra sharing, adopted cat, so much happens it’s 200k long but it flies by it’s so good

6. Rebuilding by KinomiAkai, E-rated, 25k (and anything and everything by them!! Seriously binge read all of their Naruto fics they are all amazing I had such trouble just picking one!!) 

Given Summary: Sasuke has spent every day since the war’s end trying to rebuild. It’s a good thing Naruto has been doing the same, isn’t it? 

My summary: Naruto’s been working himself to the bone trying to make Kohona into a place Sasuke would like to call home, when Sasuke notices and decides to help him in his endeavor–cue a developing relationship get together!

7. Everybody Knows That You Cradle the Sun by Kyxxie, 17k, E-rated 

Given summary: “Y’know—before mom passed—she used to tell me about my dad. She’d tell me the kind of person you wanted to end up with, someone you kept around. She’d tell me about opposites, about calming the other one down and bringing them back up, about how they’d do the same for you. She’d say that you wanted someone who remembered things about you, not just the big stuff. Mundane shit that doesn’t need to be remembered, but they do anyway. She’d say ‘keep those who chronicle your life because it’s theirs, too’.“ 

OR 

Naruto challenges Sasuke to a game of “who knows the other person better”. Sasuke panics when he realizes that he might be the winner because what in the actual fuck does that mean? He doesn’t know. Naruto tells him.

Given Summary: Sasuke comes back to the village after a few months away. (Or, Sasuke realizes that Naruto is more of a home to him than Konoha ever was.)

Given summary: Sasuke is still here. Or maybe; love hasn’t passed them yet. 

My Summary: Post-Boruto movie fix-it fic, getting together, AU where Naruto gets married (then divorced) but Sasuke never does, lovely conversations

The smell, the taste, the sight—he was drowning in it. Thick as iron, it coated the ground in dark, glistening pools. Bodies fell like broken dolls, their faces frozen in shock, their gasps lost to the chaos. And at the centre of it all, sword in hand, stood the one who had betrayed them.

A brother. Watching as his very own kin became corpses. "Oh, don’t worry, you’re not worth killing, my foolish little brother." Itachi.

“Itachi!”

Sasuke burst out of bed in a cold sweat, panting as he wiped his forehead. The sheets tangled around him like chains. It was just a nightmare, Sasuke told himself. But that nightmare had happened. He’d experienced it 518,400 times already. Was that not enough? How many more times would the agony of that moment haunt him and would it ever stop, or would this torment persist endlessly until the day he could finally claim vengeance? Here's my opening. Okay, so over the recent holidays (when I probably should be revising for my college exams...) I got obsessed with Naruto again and rewatched the entirety of OG Naruto and most of shippuden all over again. I rewatched and re-read a bunch of old fan comics, fanfictions, fan animations, and I just got a burst of creativity that I haven't had since I was a 12 year old on wattpad! But, now with my much better literary skills, I present to you the title of my new work on AO3! "Snowdrop With a Bleeding Heart" by Itz_cidiyumJen.

It follows the canon episode from 3-5 of the OG anime, and you'll probably notice that immediately. That's just the starting point and the next chapters after that will be much more original but I do suggest you read my first chapter anyway. I added a few extra details and my own observations and perspective of those episodes. I am using it as a foundation to spur the fanfic into it's own realm of fanon but I want to stay true to the characters the entire time.

Also, if the title wasn't obvious enough, I'm a sucker for natural imagery. You won't be seeing it in the first chapter but be prepared for there to by some recurring motifs.

Another thing. I'm not a huge fan of smut or even drawn out making out scenes. I want the love in this fanfic to be of the purest form. In my opinion, Naruto and Sasuke at heart are just traumatised kids who need to be on a path of healing together and have a bond deeper than physicality. Physical touch will be a no-brainer but sexual themes will not be present (I also have no clue on how to write them in the first place...) If anyone else has returned to their Naruto phase (or never left) I do hope you check it out! Any feedback is much appreciated. And most of all, I just want to hear your thoughts. I love writing and ever since my courses have been all science-y, math-y based, I want to hold onto it.

This specific panel from Chapter 109

Literal translation:

“Chuuya” “Come to your senses”

“Our fate will not conclude in a place like this.” “That's because we are destined toー”

Since Japanese is a highly complex language, a few ideas have been lost in translation, but I think its notable that we have never seen Dazai talk like this before. It's straight to the point, heartfelt, and delivered with 100% sincerity.

....It sounds like something you'll hear from his thoughts.

Throughout the series, Dazai's thoughts are something us readers never hear. As a result, little is known about his true intentions. In fact, he's so enigmatic to the extent that even the anime producer, Igarashi Takuya, and the seiyuu, Miyano Mamoru, don't to understand his character to the fullest extent.

He is always putting on a mask, so we almost never get glimpses of his "true" self. And this is expressed by Harukawa's style in the manga by his eyes being dull and empty, like an endless abyss. It portrays him as a hollow shell, which makes perfect sense when you think of his chronic depression.

On a side note, this might be one of my favorite panels of Dazai. It really shows how scary and ruthless he can be.

But in the times where he is honest or expresses genuine emotions, Harukawa always puts light in his eyes.

For example:

I searched for around half an hour to find a panel where his eyes are depicted similarly, but this was the most similar comparison. And this was his reaction when he realized that Oda, a dear friend that he had crossed a universe for, saw him as no more than a stranger.

And it hurts even more when you realize that in both of these cases, he reacts this way after being hurt one way or another by a person he deeply cares about.

So, in conclusion, even if the entire thing ends up being acting, and Dazai really does end up being fine, you can tell that in that moment, he truly meant everything he said to Chuuya.

A/N: Fun fact: In the Japan fanbase, we call them 太中 (Dachuu?) so it was really interesting to learn that they're referred to as "Soukoku" here overseas. I actually prefer this one. I think it sounds really cool and epic :)

People are livid with the way bones animated the “fyodor you rat” scene and it made me realize I interpreted it slightly differently when I read the manga.

Yes, Dazai is angry in the manga, but I thought there’s an undercurrent of like…sick impressment?

A sort of:

“Fyodor you rat…MY EX???? Are you fucking joking???? My first love??? Stripped of his humanity???? Turned into a mindless killing machine??? Fuck you, like— Fuck You, seriously….but I will say…you hit bullseye. FUCK YOU—but talent recognises talent you know?Yeah, I’ll gut you like a fish but I would do the exact same thing to you, if I had the chance…..but fuck you. But also Bravo.”
