Viral Intervention: Final Artifact
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Title: Untitled
Measurements/Materials: 35 square feet of fabric, around 160 paper planes
At the time of presenting we ended up changing the orientation of the fabric to give it a more striking look with all the planes nosediving as they turned red. We placed it in the middle of the room so it would stand out and be immediately imposing, since we got rid of the written statement so it would be once again more to viewer interpretation, we needed it to grab everyones attention in a more effective way. I was very glad people did read it as a piece about casualties in war, the take that it specifically represented children was interesting though.

Viral Interventions: Final Documentation

Title: Untitled
Measurements/Materials: 35 square feet of fabric, around 160 paper planes
For the piece we ended up assembling it in a public area in campus and recording people's reaction to it. The piece itself was made by dying several patches of cloth in red in various degrees and then sewing them all together, the paper planes were made in several colors that would go according with the colors of the fabric and each individual paper plane was then stapled into the cloth.
We wanted the piece to be up to viewers interpretation, but midway through the journey we decided to add an artist statement to see if it would change their reactions to the piece. At its core we did intent it with mostly the dangers and importance of journalism in mind, so the video tried to appreciate that behind the scenes feel as in to mirror all that goes into journalism itself and if it should be considered a form of art as well.

Assignment 4: Flag race challenge
Tumblr media
Title: Free Blue
Materials: 3x5 foot of blue fabric, black fabric marker, 1 square foot of yellow minky fabric and 3 feet of golden sequin fabric.
For this flag we had to find a way to connect it back to our previous assignment, I did so through the motif of birds. My partner made their flag with the look of a night sky, so I thought it very fitting to make mine a sunny blue sky. Last project had a lot of birds flying on the projector, so this one has a sky full of birds flying together. The flag is also made with the same fabric that composed the nest in the last project. The yellow and golden fabric are sewn in to make a sun in the center that also kinda looks like a nest on its own right.

As for the actual race, we divided that we would go visit a friend for the midpoint. I managed to get there first by asking a the same friend for a ride since I don't have a car and my family was busy that day. It was a lot of fin and it was interesting to have the flag of a daytime scene in a night time light.

Assignment 3: Framing the Space
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tittle: Box Shaped Isolation
Materials: A plushie of a red-winged blackbird, projector playing footage of red-winged black birds, blue, white and yellow fabric, and stool.
This time I wanted my piece to serve as symbolism for isolation, the plushie bird is real, but sits alone while groups of birds get projected in front of it. The projection serves as a self imposed box upon the bird. There is no reason for the bird to want to leave as it already feels like it has company, even if that company is fake.
The bird rests upon fabrics that purposely mirror the colors of the sky, it shows the nostalgia for something you've never actually had, but wish you could.
Overall, I wanted this piece to serve as a small representation of how people can feel so trapped yet lonely in the digital age despite technology making it easier than ever to talk with other people.

Assignment 2: Iconic Places
Title: Memory-Watching Summer
Materials: Iphone camera and iMovie video editing software.
This piece is personal to me as this area is near to my house. That parking-lot to the left is where me and my friends used to constantly people watch after buying drinks in the store nearby. Most of the friends I used to do it with have moved on to different things, but that place is still there every time I go outside my house.
I wanted to give the video that same strange feeling of calm yet inevitability that comes when you are about to graduate high school, thats where the song (Missed Connections by Louie Zong) comes from. Additionally I wanted it to feel dream like, so the events appear as out of order, the left being the actual action of people watching while the right are the silly rituals and turns to get to the same spot, they both show different events with different moods, yet at the end they meet in the middle. Past and Future gently bumping into each other, creating the present.

Assignment 25°45'10.0"N80°22'56.5"W
Tumblr media
Title: Final Care
Materials: LED lights, a volunteer, covers, Bandages, Several jars, a hat and a plague doctor mask.
For this piece I wanted to do something that gave the impression of a medieval setting, the volunteer sits while I "clean" his wounds while in costume. I wanted the LED lights to be a tone similar to yellow to create a more cozy atmosphere, reminiscent to candlelight. Covers and pillows are present so the volunteer looks as in their deathbed, at the end of the presentation the volunteer is wrapped and covered . A common thing for plague doctors is that they weren't actual doctors, they just went to pick up the bodies, sometimes arriving before the person died. I wanted to tell a story of a collector offering comfort through someone's final moments.
