Well, this is my final post about Bonny’s Island. It’s a selection of story moments I turned into color keys. The color script shows a rough summary of the whole story.
“The color script sets the palette and mood based on the emotional progression throughout the film. As my intention was to create a heartwarming family film, I chose to work with a vibrant and colorful palette.”

These are some of the environment concepts I did for Bonny’s Island.
“Bonny‘s Island is a place of adventures and mystery. It is a beautiful tropical paradise that wants to be explored. Most noticeable is the repeating appearance of the sugar cone shape. On the island, it is the volcano that represents this shape. It is a shape with a lot of story...”

Rikuni and the other monkeys are the last characters I designed for my project.
“The monkeys are the largest group of inhabitants on the island. Ol’Hunter, who had many years to pursuit his plan, quickly discovers the little fellows’ love for sugar. Soon enough, he has figured out how to enslave them with a special syrup made of the island‘s sugar loafs. The monkeys turn out to be pretty useful minions for his treasure hunt, helping him build the operation base and mining system.”

Ol’ Hunter is the villain of my story “Bonny’s Island”. I had a lot of fun exploring this character. His design went through some changes according to character arc adjustments I made for the story. “Ol‘ Hunter is a portrayal of manifested greed and madness. He is hunting Bonny‘s treasure to gain the power over the seven seas. To achieve his goal, he even goes so far to enslave the entire monkey population of the island to make his evil plan work. His hot-tempered being adds to his crazy and unpredictable character.” And now “Ye lazy scumbags back to set the sails!”

Tica was the first character I designed for my “Bonny’s Island” bachelor project. I explored the most on her design to find a fitting character style, on which I could base my other characters.
“Tica is like the best friend everyone wishes to have. She is funny, warmhearted and always there to cover your back when you’re in trouble. The confident young woman has indigenous roots but grew up in Miguel‘s family. Both kids are like siblings, with Tica taking the role of the older sister. She is tough and always one step ahead to outsmart others.”

Earlier this year I did my own visual development project to wrap up my studies. I thought I could share the work with you guys. “Bonny’s Island” is a story about two shipwrecked kids stumbling into an adventure on a mysterious island. These first pieces are early blue sky sketches as well as early and final story moments. In the process I changed the story and had to cut it down to take the project where I wanted it to be.
The following is a small excerpt out of the artbook I created for this project.
“Bonny‘s Island is a story I wanted to create for a long time. I‘ve always been a big fan of adventure stories and feature animation, so I finally decided to combine both into one with this visual development bachelor project.”

I wanted to try something different and explored some sci-fi steampunkish spacesuit designs. Turned out to be really fun and I'm thinking about expanding this univers. Cheers :)
