"Culture City of East Asia 2017 Kyoto, Asia Corridor, Contemporary Art Exhibition", Kyoto Art Center Last time I wrote the article about the "Culture City of East Asia 2017 Kyoto, Asia Corridor, Contemporary Art Exhibition" in Nijo-jo castle. Today I write a different article in Kyoto Art Center. Kyoto Art Center has two exhibitions spaces and some workshop rooms. It is host to paintings, videoworks and photos displayed by Chinese, Korean and Japanese artists. For example, Chinese artist Tao Hui displays a video installation. The story is about a girl with six fingers and it is shown in two videoworks. It is a serious installation and it may be complicated to understand the story. On the other hand, Japanese artist Kodai Nakahara displays many paintings from his youth straight on the tables. I wonder why he would make these private items open to the public. Actually I have seen them (or other artworks) in other exhibitions. It is a good exhibition, isn't it? This exhibition is meant as an exchange of art among artists of different cultures and backgrounds, however the level and freshness are much different. The viewer have to think, imagine and be curious to see about it. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #painting #installation #video #videowork #photo #Kyoto #当代艺术 #當代藝術 #미술 #전시회 #современноеискусство #zeitgenössischeKunst #artcontemporain #artecontemporanea #artecontemporaneo (at Kyoto Art Center)

Culture City of East Asia 2017 Kyoto, Asia Corridor, Contemporary Art Exhibition, Nijo-jo castle The Culture and art exchange program between China, Korea and Japan have been held since 2014. There is a city selected from each county and there are many events held there, for example, the exhibition "Culture City of East Asia 2017 Kyoto" starts now in Kyoto, Japan. The exhibition venue is Nijo-jo castle which was built in 1679, and there we can see some artworks inside the castle and outside. It is interesting to see Cai Guo Qiang's large ship, which was presented last year exhibition during the last exhibition in Nara and we can see it in Kyoto again. In Japan, nowdays it is not unusual to display artworks in the castle (or outside / not art space), because contemporary art exhibitions in Japan are not held in museums. Therefore the combination of Kyoto's architecture and nature make for a splendid venue, one that almost outshines the exhibition itself. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #castle #installation #sculpture #video #videowork #ceramics #Kyoto #当代艺术 #當代藝術 #미술 #전시회 #современноеискусство #zeitgenössischeKunst #artcontemporain #artecontemporanea #artecontemporaneo (at Nijō Castle)

SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia, Mori Art Museum and The National Art Center, Tokyo Nowdays the exhibition consists of artworks displayed not only by the artists but the curator as well. However, considering the art exhibitions I saw, Japanese curators are lazy. Especially looking at this exhibition, which has just imported artworks from several exhibitions and biennale in Southeast Asia. The curator for the exhibition should work with the artists and their artworks. Korakrit Arunanondchai, for example, when I saw his exhibition in New York back in April that was amazing, an extraordinary use of space by alternating sculptures and a video work. The exhibition SUNSHOWER shows different, there is like a meek installation in the blue space. I wonder if the New York style may be suitable to the Japanese style and would he still agree to display here? Recently we have access to a lot of information online, so why do we even bother to go to the museum for the exhibition? Like this, there would be no need for imports and curators would be create clear concept exhibitions to attract viewers. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #museum #painting #installation #sculpture #video #videowork #Tokyo (at 森美術館 Mori Art Museum, Tokyo)

HIGHLIGHTS, Seoul Museum of Art The Foundation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, which is commissioned for its exhibitions in Paris, presents impressive contemporary artworks in the Seoul Museum of Art. It showcased various artworks from prominent artists worldwide, such as Cai Guo-Qiang, Lee Bul or Ron Mueck. I am interested in the work of Moebius, he is a brilliant cartoonist from France. The short 3D animation "La Plantete Encore" contains entertainment and art. His short animation has amazed viewers from different walks of life and ages. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #painting #sculpture #photo #animation #installation #museum #Korea #当代艺术 #當代藝術 #미술 #전시회 #современноеискусство #zeitgenössischeKunst #artcontemporain #artecontemporanea #artecontemporaneo (at 서울시립미술관 Seoul Museum of Art)

Our Bright Future - Cybernetics Fantasy, Nam June Paik Center Generally speaking, media art comes from Japan and Korea due to their famous AV companies, such as, SONY and Samsung. Nam June Paik is Korean media artist. He is one of the pioneers of media art and named after the center's name. This exhibition displays the works of the young generation those that are represented by the generation Paik's grandchildren. Yang Zhen Zhong 's art work is easy to understand as it is represented through videowork. The video work presents factory workers with masks molded after their faces who carry on with their work as usual. The white faces lacking expression makes us very scared. PROTOROOM want to make the viewer aware of the concept of pixels. They are installed a screen and a camera in the space. An usual camera has a high resolution, however PROTOROOM's camera has been programmed so that each photo displays the pixels not the high resolution image. Within the exhibition of the viewers can enjoy the diversity of media art. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #mediaart #videowork #video #computer #camera #pixel #installation #Korea #当代艺术 #當代藝術 #미술 #전시회 #современноеискусство #zeitgenössischeKunst #artcontemporain #artecontemporanea #artecontemporaneo (at 백남준아트센터 Nam June Paik Art Center)

Yokohama Trienniale, Yokohama Museum The largest art event in Japan "Yokohama Trienniale" is held in Yokohama, Japan. Due to the ambiguous theme, "Islands, Constellations & Galapagos", it is not easy to imagine that one will have fun visiting this art event. There are more works from older display for each artist than new works. For example, in Olafur Eliasson case, we can see the same artworks as in his past exhibitions in other countries. In Maurizio Cattelan case, we can see artwork that have been created in 1990s. Probably this trienniale is not dedicated to art lovers in the world but for the local residents. It is not enough to travel long distances by train or airplane just to see an exhibition. And curators and artists should be aware that it is not a global standard event but a local art event. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #trienniale #triennial #artevent #museum #painting #installation #photo #sculpture #video #Yokohama #当代艺术 #當代藝術 #미술 #전시회 #современноеискусство #zeitgenössischeKunst #artcontemporain #artecontemporanea #artecontemporaneo (at 横浜美術館 Yokohama Museum of Art)

"49%", STANDING PINE This is a group exhibition that artists from several countries with personal connections. I don't know the meaning of this exhibition's title nor do I see any unity overall within the artworks, but taken separately each artwork seems interesting. For instance, I-Chen Lai displays a video work, there are two images spelling "Medicated Existence" and by overlapped them. One's letters seem erased while the others can be explicitly read. Alliki's work is used on the flyer of the exhibition, representing a very colorful scarf. We can see a video work of how the scarf is made, having it painted and how the color dispersed into each other creating the final result. Thus, I have to admit some artwork, but not all of them are like this. Therefore this group show exhibition is difficult to understand. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #gallery #video #photo #installation #nagoya #当代艺术 #當代藝術 #미술 #전시회 #современноеискусство #zeitgenössischeKunst #artcontemporain #artecontemporanea #artecontemporaneo (at STANDING PINE)

Hiroto Kitagawa 2017 - Love & Truth -, Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery These statues represent a common What does an artist think about when he/she creates his/her artworks? Hiroto Kitagawa is well known for his figurative human like sculptures, for which he used terracotta to ceramic recently. We can see three life-size statues, similar to ordinary people which represent an extension of his past works seen on the floor below. He says he wants to represent ordinary people in contemporary times. These statues represent a common style wearing MUJI cloths and sneakers. However, on the upper floor, his statue changes from a common style. One life-size statue is armed and faces 17armed small statues. It is a tense artwork, representing the conflict between countries such as the US, North Korea and China. Kitagawa became aware and interested in the international issues because he always watches TV and listens to radio in his studio. People see him as a popular artist, collectors buy his new works in several art fairs. Actually this exhibition proves that he is a complex artist. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #gallery #sculpture #terracotta #ceramic #osaka #当代艺术 #當代藝術 #미술 #전시회 #современноеискусство #zeitgenössischeKunst #artcontemporain #artecontemporanea #artecontemporaneo (at Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery)

Noriyuki Haraguchi new works exhibition, Kenji Taki Gallery, Nagoya Noriyuki Haraguchi shows new artworks, similar to paintings and sculptures. They are a little difficult to define since he uses canvases and paints on polyurethane. These are works point out "an unclear world". The flat surface of some of his works seems opaque denoting a sense of fear and uncertainly. The form and the colors add to its strangeness. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #gallery #photo #kyoto #当代艺术 #當代藝術 #미술 #전시회 #современноеискусство #zeitgenössischeKunst #artcontemporain #artecontemporanea #artecontemporaneo (at Kenji Taki Gallery)

Taiwanese young photographer exhibition "The And", gallery Main Taiwanese photographers come to Kyoto, Japan to open an exhibition. Artists that usually commit to the photo industry bring an unique point of view to the contemporary art through their photos. Lee Cheng Han's theme is regarding the meaning of a photo and a display installation. One of his works represents a bean seed that grew in a small pot using small phot cuts as soil. He shared his belief in the photographic power and that the beans germinate with the help of that power. Yo Yong shows photos which are bind within the corrugated plastic board. Thus the representation is fashionable and become a 3D artwork. These photos are not just simple prints on the paper, their manner of display is also diverse. Nowdays everyone can take photos, nonetheless we need to think about the reason and we want to express as artists do. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #gallery #photo #kyoto (at GalleryMain)

Jun Fujiyasu "empathize", The Third Gallery Aya Today I am going to writing about an artist who uses printmaking. He is a lithographer that creates a print work by printing in different colors on the same paper. The editor of a specialized printmaking magazine says that compared with other lithographer who depict their works clearly, his printings are rather abstract. While considering the motif of the previously mentioned it I also saw Fujiyasu's photo exhibition. In Fujiyasu's exhibition, we can see portraits of twins. Twins look alike, however they are not necessarily similar. We can easily perceive the differences between them, such as clothing, hair style, with or without glasses. These are interesting works, but I saw the exhibition in a moment. #art #exhibition #artreview #exhibitionreview #contemporaryart #artwork #artworks #artist #gallery #photo #portrait #twin #osaka #当代艺术 #當代藝術 #미술 #전시회 #современноеискусство #zeitgenössischeKunst #artcontemporain #artecontemporanea #artecontemporaneo (at The Third Gallery Aya)
