Netgear Advising Arlo Customers To Change Their Passwords
Home security devices like security cameras are meant to keep our homes safe, but who’s going to keep the cameras safe? The onus falls onto the company behind those devices, and unfortunately for those who are using Netgear’s Arlo security systems, it seems that the company is asking its customers to change their passwords over a recent security scare.
It should be noted that Netgear’s systems have not been hacked or compromised, but it seems that the company has noticed some suspicious activity involving attackers who were trying to break into the accounts of its users, which prompted the company to get its customers to update their account passwords just to be safe.
According to Netgear, it seems that these attackers have managed to get their hands on user credentials from an unknown third-party source, which is why Netgear believes that their systems might not have been compromised. Changing your password will only take a couple of minutes so if you do have some time to spare, perhaps it could be worth making the change just to be safe.
While changing and having to remember new passwords can be a bother, this is where password managers come in, so perhaps take a look at that if you need help remembering them.

Nintendo Trademark Hints At N64 Classic
Nintendo has revived a couple of its consoles from back in the day, resulting in the NES Classic, the SNES Classic, which begs the question of whether or not we could be getting more revivals in the near future. In fact in the past there have been hints of Nintendo possibly creating an N64 Classic, and now it looks like there are more signs of that happening.
According to a new trademark filing, it appears that Nintendo could indeed be working towards the creation and release of an N64 Classic. This was spotted by JapaneseNintendo in which the trademark was for the controllers and software of the N64. It is possible that Nintendo could simply be keeping its trademarks up to date to prevent intellectual property theft, but like we said based on previous releases, an N64 Classic might not be out of the question.
Nintendo has seen a fair amount of success with its Classic releases of its older consoles, prompting other companies to follow suit with similar releases of their own. This is why it isn’t such a far out idea to think that Nintendo might be looking to continue reviving its older consoles like the N64.
In fact late last year there were even rumors that a Game Boy Classic could potentially be in the works as well. Either way take it with a grain of salt and hopefully we’ll have more details later this year.

Buskers In London Can Now Accept Payment With Contactless Cards
Musicians performing by the side of the road, in the subway, in cafes, and so on usually take tips in the form of small change. However what if you really liked the performance but did not have any spare change to give in terms of tips? Over in London, it seems that you might no longer have an excuse not to tip a musician.
This is because the city of London has partnered with iZettle in a project called Busk in London where they are trialing out the ability for street performers to accept contactless cards in terms of payment. What this means is that if you see a performer you like and want to tip them, you have the option of using cash or using a contactless card system as buskers will get a terminal in which users can enter the amount they wish to give, and tap their cards against it to make the payment.
The system is currently in trial and according to full-time busker Charlotte Campbell who has been trialling the system, “I believe if street performers like myself don’t adapt to the cashless society we are edging towards, we’re at risk of becoming a dying art. I’ve only trialled Repeat Payments for two weeks and it’s already had a significant impact on the contributions I’ve received. More people than ever tap-to-donate whilst I sing, and often, when one person does, another follows.”
So far the system has been rolled out to London’s 32 boroughs and there are more planned in the coming months.

Recent OnePlus 6 Update Seemingly Removes Always-On Ambient Display
There are some phones out there that have the ability to display information on the screen at all times, even when it is locked. This helps keep users informed if they might have an email or message that needs attending, or if it is something they can tend to later without having to reach for their phone or turn it on.
This was one of the features of the OnePlus 6, at least at launch, but unfortunately it seems that for some reason the company has since removed it. According to users, following a recent update to the handset, it appears that OnePlus 6 has removed the option for users to choose between an always-on ambient display or a lift up display mode.
Instead users are only left with the latter option which involves picking up the phone to turn the screen on (without having to press any buttons). It is unclear as to why OnePlus might have removed the feature, but some speculation on the forums has suggested that the feature was a massive battery drain, while others suggested that it might have been a feature that was being tested and has now been removed concluding the test.
Either way OnePlus has yet to officially comment on it, but until then we guess OnePlus 6 users won’t have that feature.

Image Of Moto Z3 Play With 5G Moto Mod Leaked
While it does seem that carriers could potentially roll out 5G coverage faster compared to when they were rolling out 4G, there is a problem and that is there aren’t many (if any) devices in the market that supports 5G. This means that even if your carrier rolls out 5G coverage in your city, if your phone does not support 5G, then there’s really no point.
No doubt there are more than a few smartphone makers who are already working on bringing 5G support to future handsets, but it seems that Motorola could have an interesting solution. The folks at XDA have posted an image of what is allegedly the Moto Z3 Play with a 5G Moto Mod.
For those unfamiliar with Moto Mods, these are accessories that you can clip onto compatible Motorola handsets. This means that with this 5G Moto Mod, in theory it should allow users of older Motorola handsets to take advantage of 5G cellular coverage when it eventually launches. This is actually not the first time we’ve seen the leaks of the Moto Z3 Play or heard about the 5G Moto Mod, but the latest leak only seems to corroborate what we’ve heard in the past.
No word on when the handset is expected to officially launch, so we’ll just have to keep an eye out for it.

Carrot Weather’s profanity-spewing forecast app arrives on Android
iOS developer Brian Mueller’s Carrot Weather app has won numerous awards and features in Apple’s App Store for making it fun to check the day’s forecasts. It’s finally made its way to Google Play so Android users can enjoy its hilarious approach to bringing you weather information. Sure, you can see plenty of data at a glance, follow storms, and check forecasts for the several days ahead, just like most other such apps – but Carrot sets itself apart with ridiculous dialogue that insults you while telling you about the weather and guiding you through the interface. It’s silly, but…

Teacher sends back letter from White House, after correcting it
Retired English teacher Yvonne Mason has spent much of her life correcting students’ writing.
But it’s a letter from the White House, signed by President Donald Trump, which has proved a pretty noteworthy correction exercise — and it’s attracted plenty of attention.
SEE ALSO: We’ve become normalized to Trump’s tweets. Not this one.
“If it had been written in middle school, I’d give it a C or C-plus,” she told The Greenville. “If it had been written in high school, I’d give it a D.”
Mason, who retired last year after a 17-year career in South Carolina, corrected the letter she had received in response to her concerns following the February shooting at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Read more…

Grab launches a food delivery service in Southeast Asia
Fresh from completing its acquisition of Uber’s Southeast Asia business, ride-hailing firm Grab has officially launched its food delivery business — GrabFood — today.
The service is already available in beta in a handful of countries, including Thailand, but now it is available in Singapore (Grab HQ) with plans to reach Grab’s core six markets in Southeast Asia in the coming months. As part of its acquisition of Uber Southeast Asia, Grab took charge of UberEats in the region and moved its merchants and customer base to GrabFood before shuttering the Uber service.
GrabFood is available as a standalone app in Singapore, but in countries where Grab offers motorbikes on-demand the service is integrated into the core Grab app. The service will compete against the likes of Deliveroo, FoodPanda, Go-Jek’s GoFood, and others.
The GrabFood service is also tied to Grab’s rewards and loyalty program — GrabRewards — and customers can use cash, cards or GrabPay to pay for their orders. Two notable features allow customers schedule orders in advance while there is also no minimum spend on orders.
Grab announced a deal to buy rival Uber’s local business in March, although the deal itself doesn’t seem to have progressed quite as smoothly as expected. As TechCrunch reported last month, a mixture of regulatory concerns, disgruntled employees scheduled to transition to Grab and consumer concern at the lack of competition have weighed on what is Grab’s coming-of-age moment.
Nonetheless, Grab said in a statement that its move into food delivery is an important part of its strategy to develop “an interconnected ecosystem of consumer services to make the everyday lives of people easier.”
Removing Uber may have made that goal more realistic, but Grab will face competition regionally after Go-Jek, the market leader in Indonesia that’s backed by the likes of Google and Tencent, confirmed plans to expand to four new markets imminently. Go-Jek is putting $500 million behind that expansion, which it said will be modeled on a partner approach that gives local founding teams full control of the business in each new country.
Rather than standing still, Grab is reported to be raising $1 billion in fresh funding at a valuation of $10 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. That would represent a significant increase on the $6 billion valuation that Grab commanded when it gobbled up $2 billion from SoftBank and China’s Didi Chuxing last July.
Go-Jek, meanwhile, recently raised around $1.5 billion from a list of investors that include Tencent, JD.com, Google, Allianz, Meituan and Singapore-based funds GIC and Temasek.

Google Assistant starts consolidating all your reservations and purchases in one place
It seems that every couple of weeks, there’s a change to the way information is displayed in Google Assistant, its Explore page, or its Settings. When it comes to the latter, we’ve seen an empty Purchases page, integrated Reminders, and a link to your Stocks page that came and disappeared. Today, there’s something new showing up: Reservations (as discovered by Cody in a teardown not so long ago).

Trump says ZTE will pay $1.3B fine and overhaul its management to continue US business
U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Chinese telecom firm ZTE will pay a $1.3 billion fine and undergo a significant overhaul of its management team in order to remain operational in North America.
ZTE looked to be in dire straits when it ceased its business in the U.S. earlier this month after a Department of Commerce order banned U.S. partners from selling components to the company in response to it flouting trade bans in Iran and North Korea.
The company has since been reprised — a strategy move within the U.S.-China trade stand-off — but Trump said today that its new life comes at a cost. That’s apparently a $1.3 billion fine, a new management team and board, and “high-level security guarantees.”
Senator Schumer and Obama Administration let phone company ZTE flourish with no security checks. I closed it down then let it reopen with high level security guarantees, change of management and board, must purchase U.S. parts and pay a $1.3 Billion fine. Dems do nothing….
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 25, 2018
Trump previously took to Twitter to break news of ZTE’s reprieve and today, while aiming to score political points, he gave insight into why ZTE is being given another chance.
ZTE has over 70,000 employees, it grossed more than $17 billion in annual revenue and it maintains close ties to the Chinese government. As I wrote earlier this month, a company of its global scale brings significant revenue to U.S. businesses which, beyond more obvious consumer-facing companies, includes component-level partners like Qualcomm, who would be impacted if ZTE were to disappear tomorrow.
Trump’s claim that ZTE “must purchase U.S. parts,” while as yet unconfirmed, suggests the deal is important for ZTE’s U.S. business partners as well as being a key card in working out his administration’s complicated relationship with China.
How ZTE became the focal point of US/China relations
Still, despite these apparent conditions, the decision to allow ZTE to continue is hugely controversial. Most companies don’t get a second chance for the kind of activities that the Chinese firm has carried out.
The company flouted trade bans to Iran and North Korea, then it lied about them and tried to cover its tracks before finally admitting its guilt. Speaking in April, Trump’s own Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, said:
“ZTE made false statements to the U.S. Government when they were originally caught and put on the Entity List, made false statements during the reprieve it was given, and made false statements again during its probation. ZTE misled the Department of Commerce. Instead of reprimanding ZTE staff and senior management, ZTE rewarded them. This egregious behavior cannot be ignored.”
Beyond that, the firm’s close links to the Chinese government have long troubled U.S. security agencies concerned that ZTE equipment was being used by American telecom firms and security agencies.
Here’s what FBI Director Chris Wray told the Senate Intelligence Committee in February:
“We’re deeply concerned about the risks of allowing a company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don’t share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks.”

5 ways deception tech is disrupting cybersecurity
Enterprises and their Security Operations Centers (SOCs) are under siege. Security events are being triggered from all corners of the security stack – from the firewall, endpoints, and servers, from intrusion detection systems and other security solutions. What’s more is that security teams do not have enough people or hours in a day to analyze the alerts that are coming in, and most ‘security events’ don’t even imply an attack in progress. They often are simply sharing information (failed connections, for example) or are what we call ‘false positives’ (when a solution thinks it has found a specific vulnerability, but in…

Samsung will pretend to break millions of TVs in a new ad. What could go wrong?
The general consensus when a TV starts to show static or blacks out is that something has gone terribly wrong. When you see it happen, you might get up, check the cord or cable box, and if you’re watching one of your favorite shows, you’d probably get upset.
But that’s not stopping Samsung from making this annoyance occur on millions of television sets in the UK when it begins running its new TV ads.
Samsung announced Friday it will “turn off” an estimated 8 million TVs this weekend, leaving the screens completely black in a radical new advertisement series that features literally nothing. The point of the new ad campaign is to highlight the new “Ambient Mode” capabilities of Samsung’s QLED TVs, which allow them to blend into a home’s environment. Read more…
