Chery SA Celebrates 20,000 Cars Sold
Chery SA is celebrating a milestone of 20,000 unit sales since its return to this market 18 months ago. The sales success follows the breakthrough of the Chinese brand into the current top 10 best-selling vehicle brands within SA.
The first Chery models were initially imported to SA in 2008 by the Imperial Group (now Motus) before exiting the market in 2018 due to poor sales. The brand relaunched as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chinese parent company in late 2021, arriving with the entry-level Tiggo 4 Pro crossover SUV. The company followed up with the Tiggo 7 Pro and the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro, later the Tiggo 8 Pro MAX.
Part of Chery's aggressive marketing includes extended service and maintenance plans and a standard 1 million-kilometre/10-year engine warranty with two elements: a standard five-year/150,000km warranty and a free extension for another five years with an additional 850,000km engine warranty provided that the vehicle is still with the original owner. Obviously, the Chery Tiggo 4 price has helped a lot too.
The newest addition to the value-added services launched this week is the Chery Extender offer. It allows new and existing owners of Chery Tiggo Pro models to extend their service plan, convert their service plan into a full maintenance plan or extend their mechanical warranty.
The My Chery Cares feature which has been available to customers includes add-on insurance products and a take-me-home concierge service, while a larger parts distribution warehouse has been opened in Boksburg, Gauteng.

Chery Signs Off On Hertz Deal For 100 Tiggo SUVs
Chinese vehicle importer Chery has wrapped up its first large fleet transaction, handing over 100 Chery Tiggo SUVs to Hertz Rent-A-Car.
The transaction follows shortly after Chery created a dedicated fleet sales division with Lazola Qungwana at the helm.
“We opened our doors earlier this year in response to the overwhelming interest in Chery vehicles, both from small and large corporate buyers,” says Qungwana.
As part of its offering to vehicle rental fleets, Chery guarantees same-day services for vehicles it receives before 14:00.
The company has also made special arrangements with its dealers for weekend services and repairs on Saturdays.
Chery says it also guarantees the transport of any vehicle that needs attention to the nearest Chery dealer.
In the event that a service or repair part is not available, Chery guarantees that the vehicle will not be stationary for more than five days.
“The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro…has become not only our best-selling model range, but it is now also a top-ten best-selling vehicle in South Africa,” says Qungwana.

Of the R1,2 million new models sold, more than 450 000 units were exported from China making Chery one of China’s most notable exporters and ranks second overall with a domestic sales spike of 28,8%, which is even more impressive considering the domestic average sits at 2,1%. In South Africa, Chery has sold over 10 000 units in its first year and cements the brand as of the best-performing new brands in the local market. Chery reports that it saw a new record for global monthly sales which saw a total of 101 379 vehicles and recorded an export of over 50 000 units in one month. New Platform For Hybrid SUVs Showcased By Chery
Chery's new Super Hybrid Power Platform supports a pair of electrified powertrains. It's debuting this year in the new Tiggo 9 crossover.
Chery is expanding its range of electrified models and has debuted what it calls the Super Hybrid Power Platform.
It debuts this year in the Hyundai Santa Fe-sized Tiggo 9, which has yet to be confirmed for Australia. It launches in China in the second quarter of 2023.
“While timing on the Super Hybrid platform is still to be finalised, Chery is incredibly focused on the Australian market, with a comprehensive model rollout to come that will, of course, feature the latest models and the most advanced technologies,” said a spokesperson for Chery Australia.
Chery says it will offer two different plug-in hybrid powertrains using its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine.
The first uses a one-speed DHT “special hybrid transmission” and produces 145kW of power, with the other featuring a three-speed DHT with a peak power of 165kW.
In the Tiggo 9, the PHEV powertrains support 60kW fast charging.
Chery says the new platform “will facilitate the transformation of Chery into a global technology company at an accelerated pace”.
It’s been designed to achieve five-star safety ratings in Europe and Australia, with models on the platform offering 10 airbags.
There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 CPU on board, along with an EEA4.0 electronic and electrical architecture that can support 5G connectivity and gigabit Ethernet.
Chery says models on the platform will offer what it calls “magnetic levitation suspension”, which can be flicked between different settings for a softer or firmer ride.
Featuring continuous damping control, it’s said to improve the level of comfort by 30 per cent, while the new platform’s all-wheel drive system is said to improve manoeuvrability by 20 per cent – presumably compared to one of the brand’s existing platforms.
The Chinese press release also makes note of a Chery Pilot L2.9 intelligent driving assistance system comprising 21 “basic” advanced driver assistance systems and 11 “advanced intelligent driving functions”.
The Tiggo 9 specifically will offer a 24.6-inch “silky curved screen” inside its cabin, as well as a 50-inch augmented reality head-up display.
Chery has just returned to Australia with the new Omoda 5, a new vehicle it says has been developed as a global model. It will be followed later this year by the older Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro small and mid-sized Chery SUVs, respectively.
The Omoda 5 range will expand later this year with a more powerful 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and next year with an electric version.
Chery sees Australia as a priority market and says it’s targeting a little over eight per cent of the total market in each category it competes in. That would peg it at around 10,000 sales annually in the small SUV segment alone.
“We’re getting priority shipment, we’re getting priority production; everyone is watching us. So it gives us a lot of confidence that the operations globally are geared and ready for us,” said Chery Australia marketing director James Curtis earlier this year.

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Is A Family SUV With Flair
An incredibly spacious car with a number of helpful features, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro perfectly suits a busy mom's life in the city.
A sexy and incredibly spacious family car, the Chery Tiggo 8 for sale perfectly suits a busy mom’s life in the city.
Priced at R496 900 (Distinction) or R574 900 (Executive), the new seven-seater has all the bells and whistles while keeping its price very attractive when compared to its rivals, including the likes of the Mazda CX-5 and the Volkswagen Tiguan.
Before climbing in, I wondered whether a Chinese-made car would live up to my expectations, or would it feel ‘made in China’?
Thankfully my fears were unfounded. She was a dream to drive and with her upmarket interior, the cabin felt top of the range (real leather on the dash and steering wheel, fully digitised touch screens and noticeably comfortable seats).
My children thought being able to ask Siri to play music was the car’s best feature, and I would have to agree that the audio system (supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay) and voice controls did leave me impressed.
Reversing and parking was a breeze with rear park distance control plus a rear-view camera with dynamic guides and a 360-degree parking view.
Having the car lock and unlock itself felt a little odd at first, but it was fabulous to not have to hunt through the recesses of my handbag for my car key when my hands were full of shopping bags. What a win!
The wide-angle rear-view mirror was my least favourite feature, making the people in the back seats appear really small and the cars behind me even smaller. It felt quite peculiar.
However, the addition of a third window in the third row that gave greater all-around visibility when checking the blind spots was a plus.
Hopping into the passenger seats, there was plenty of leg and headroom, cup holders and a USB port in the first row.
The seats are mounted on rails, making them easy to adjust to give passengers in the far back more leg room.
As one can expect, the back row was a little less spacious and better suited for children (although comfortable for an adult when the seat in front of you is slid as far forward as it can go).
There are drinks and phone holders in the back row, but no USB port.
Boot size is of utmost importance in any family car. With all seven seats up the boot is quite compact at 193 litres (fairly standard in this segment), but with the back row down the boot becomes quite fabulous with 892 litres of space (possibly the largest in the segment).
If you need even more space, the front passenger seats fold down too, giving you a whopping 1 930 litre ‘boot’.
The parcel shelf holding all the emergency tools is easy to access under the boot floor, and the spare tyre is mounted beneath the vehicle.
Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is a stylish ride that will undoubtedly turn heads.

Chery Is Working On A New Full-Electric SUV
The new EV is rumoured to debut in the second half of 2023
Chinese brand Chery is getting ready to unveil a new EV in the midsize SUV segment as proven by a series of dark teasers. According to local media, the model is codenamed eQ7 and is expected to debut in production form in the second half of 2023.
The profile of the new Chery looks very similar to the Pininfarina-designed eQ5 that was introduced in 2020 and got updated in 2022. The window line with the chrome extension, the surfacing on the profile, the boxy wheel arches, and the pronounced rear shoulders are shared styling cues between the two SUVs. The front end however is different, with the supposedly larger eQ7 adopting simpler lines.
The Chery eQ7 appears to have split headlights, large intakes on the bumper, and a grille-less nose. We don’t get to see the tail but it looks like it has an inclined rear windshield and high-mounted horizontally-arranged LED taillights. The eQ7 could adopt an all-aluminium body like the recently updated eQ5. It is also expected to feature the latest technology in terms of ADAS and a fully digital cockpit similar to other Chery products.
Chery currently offers a wide range of models including the Tiggo line of SUVs, the Arrizo line of sedans, the Omoda 5, and the “Ant” eQ line of EVs. The new model will likely belong to the latter, coming with a fully electric powertrain. Details are scarce at the moment but the teasers suggest we might have an announcement soon, preparing us for the market launch in China that is rumoured for the second half of next year.

A Review Of The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro SUV
An auto reviewer spent a week with the crème de la crème of the Tiggo SUVs - the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro.
In terms of design and overall appeal, Chery is indeed very different from what I've initially become accustomed to. This is no longer a basic econobox, but a crossover with a lot of bells and whistles. The Tiggo 8 Pro is a follow-up to the Tiggo 8 from two years ago, but the significant changes outside made it look like it's a completely new model. At first glance, the Tiggo 8 Pro definitely has a more upscale look than the standard Tiggo 8. There's a lot less going on now with its front fascia, while it's earned its own bling-bling with the “Sunshine Galaxy” grille that has those shiny rectangular elements and the diamond mesh first seen in the Tiggo 7 Pro.At the back, the revised taillights give somewhat of a European vibe to it with its faux diffuser and its two neatly-shaped functional exhaust tips. Compared to Chery's other models, the Tiggo 8 Pro is the only crossover that has the word C H E R Y spelt on it instead of the usual badge. Perhaps this is the manufacturer's way of saying that this is indeed their flagship model. When you look at it from the side, the Tiggo 8 Pro has a body shape that accentuates the added passenger and cargo room from the B-pillar onwards, which somewhat reminds me of how Hyundai did it with the third-generation Grand Santa Fe. Being the higher-spec model, the Tiggo 8 Pro also sports a panoramic glass roof like the standard Tiggo 8.While I'm not a fan of chrome, I really like how the katana-shaped trim adds to the car's luxury appeal and how it blends into those stylish 18-inch wheels. It's not out of place compared to those you see in car accessory shops in Banawe or on your favourite online shopping app, so kudos to Chery for coming up with a well-thought-out design for its exterior.Once you press the unlock button and finish the ensuing LED light dance, the Tiggo 8 Pro welcomes you to an interior you'll normally see in vehicles with significantly higher price tags. The standard Tiggo 8 had black leather, but the Pro's got more flair with the brown upholstery. It's a major interior flex, to say the least, and you might not want to put on dark-coloured window films for this one.Getting in and out of the Tiggo 8 Pro is a relatively easy task thanks to the low ride height and large doors for the first two rows. There are plenty of premium amenities in front like power seats with heating/cooling and memory function on the driver side, plus butterfly headrests like those seen in Range Rovers. The dashboard follows a three-screen layout – one for the instrument cluster, the other for the infotainment system, and the third one for climate control settings. The 12.3-inch instrument cluster has digits instead of dials for the speedometer and tachometer and can be configured through the steering wheel controls to get vehicle information like maintenance alerts and fuel economy figures.Meanwhile, the touchscreen infotainment system has Apple CarPlay, but it doesn't have Android Auto. Android users can opt for the QD Link, or just connect via Bluetooth. Other than that, the infotainment screen displays the 360-degree camera that comes in really handy when parking the large crossover, plus the settings for the driver assistance systems. All three screens have crisp displays, albeit with some very minor nuances in the language of the interface. While it's good that it still has toggle switches to control the A/C settings, I wasn't particularly impressed with the choice of material on the piano's black centre console. The unit I drove only had about 5,000 km on it, but it does get scratched easily. Maybe Chery can come up with a screen protector for it, or you know, do it the typical Filipino car owner way – not removing the peel-off plastic. The same goes for the placing of the wireless charging pad underneath the centre console, which is not so convenient for the front passenger. Placing it just between the auto brake hold button and the armrests, at the expense of the cupholder, could have made more sense, ergonomically. The second-row seats get their own A/C vents plus a single USB charger, and the centre armrests are equipped with cupholders. The panoramic glass roof extends all the way there and helps heighten the ambience. There's no driveshaft bulge in the middle as the Tiggo 8 Pro is front-wheel-drive, and there's plenty of headroom and legroom for my 5'9” frame. While the first two rows feel like first and business class, the third-row seats, like any other crossover in this segment, feel like economy class due to their limited head and legroom. Provided it has nice headrests and A/C vents on the side, the third-row seats are best left for children or smaller adults. With the third-row seats folded flat, the Tiggo 8 Pro easily swallowed our luggage and camera gear when we used it for a weekend trip outside Metro Manila. Loading stuff at the back was made convenient by the power tailgate and the low floor. The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro uses a 1.6-litre T-GDI (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection) engine that puts out 43 kW and 290 Nm of torque paired to a 7-speed wet-type dual-clutch transmission. Our last review of the standard Tiggo 8 with the 1.5-litre turbo had adequate power for its size – now this one's more powerful. But it's not just about the power we're after, but how it drives. So how did it feel behind the wheel of the Tiggo 8 Pro?For starters, the Tiggo 8 Pro is a relatively big crossover, so don't expect a hatchback or a subcompact crossover-like agility with this one. Power is available on tap, but it's more of a smooth cruiser that's great for a relaxing and comfortable highway drive. Chery tuned the suspension more on the comfort side while remaining stable and composed towards bumps and road imperfections even at highway speeds. There's a very minimal effort with the steering wheel with how light it is, and the cabin is very quiet.I must admit I wasn't initially confident with the braking power of the Tiggo 8 Pro since it had a longer pedal journey compared to the cars I've driven before, but spending a few more days driving the crossover eventually got me used to it.The dual-clutch transmission feels smooth, though it could get jerky at times when you're trying to get going on an incline. A good hill hold function would fix that. I was also a bit surprised that there were only two driving modes – Eco and Sport, which leaves me wanting a middle ground between the two. Eco mode is great for saving fuel as it always wants to go to the highest gear possible and minimize revs, but at the expense of responsiveness when you need to kick down a gear when overtaking. On the other hand, the Sport mode really holds the gears to maximize power, but of course, that means you're sipping more fuel than normal.Speaking of fuel economy, the Tiggo 8 Pro's figures are what you would expect from a typical large crossover. I did 8.3 km/l in the city and 13 km/l on the highway. But with its fuel tank capacity only limited to 51 litres, you'll see the gas gauge going down faster than what the numbers suggest. Perhaps Chery could have fitted a larger fuel tank for the Tiggo 8 Pro, as the crossover really felt great to drive on long-distance trips. When it comes to its advanced driver assist features like autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and motorcycle alert, it's been configured to keep you very safe, but perhaps perform too sensitively. The car would turn its hazard lights on for every passing motorcycle which is good, but it can get bothersome at times. Not to mention, the lane-keep assist could use a bit more refinement. A software tweak or update could probably address these.Chery's return to the Philippine market has been nothing short of a success as the entire initial inventory of the Tiggo 8 Pro has already sold out. It's a product of all the years Chery worked on their cars to step out of the shadows of their not-so-stellar past. With better consumer brand awareness, the warranty only sweetens the deal on the already attractive price tag considering the luxury amenities the crossover is packing. The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is at the price point of base variant Japanese PPV-SUVs and within the range of B and C-segment 5-seater Japanese crossovers. And given its relatively minor nuances, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro has all the makings of being a top contender in the compact or even midsize SUV segment.....Review compiled by https://www.autoindustriya.com/car-reviews/

Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Gerts Even More Features
With its burgeoning sales figures now an open secret, resurgent Chinese automaker Chery has introduced a series of specification tweaks to its most popular model, the Tiggo 4 Pro.
Arriving less than a year after the brand’s much-publicised relaunch, the changes mainly apply to the standard specification sheet with no alterations having taken place externally.
Still comprising four trim levels as before, the base Tiggo 4 Pro Urban receives voice recognition for the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, as well as remote central locking, a tyre pressure monitor, new front seatbelt pre-tensioners and four additional airbags for a total of six.
In addition to a new front armrest, the previous cloth seats make way for vegan leather carried over the steering wheel and doors. A new six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat rounds the Urban off.
Next up, the Tiggo 4 Pro Comfort’s additions are smaller and aside from receiving those of the Urban, it also gets a remote control opening electric windows and as before, a CVT as the transmission option.
Remaining unchanged is the third-tier Elite, while the flagship Elite SE boasts new safety items comprising Adaptive Cruise Control, a 360-degree camera system, Lane Departure Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
Underneath the bonnet, Chery has kept the engine and transmission choices unchanged, meaning outputs of 85kW/141Nm from the normally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol powering the Urban and Comfort, and 108kW/210Nm from the turbo-assisted unit in the Elite and Elite SE.
A five-speed manual is standard on the Urban and the mentioned CVT on the Comfort, with the former making way for a six-speed manual on the Elite. As on the Comfort, a CVT is standard on the Elite SE but optional on the Elite.
Price
As before, all Tiggo 4 Pro models’ sticker prices include a five-year/60 000 km service plan, a five-year/150 000 km warranty and a ten-year/1 000 000 km engine warranty. Obviously, you can pay even less if you choose an updated, but used Chery Tiggo 4, instead of a brand-new one.

Chery’s Much-anticipated Omoda 5
The interior of the Omoda 5 promises to be a treat for the eyes as much as the exterior is.
Chery has introduced its much-anticipated Omoda 5 Crossover SUV, and it is destined for South African dealerships like Chery George. There are few other industries that have the opportunity to combine beautiful design and mechanical performance like the automotive industry,” said Tony Liu, executive deputy general manager of Chery South Africa.
“Unfortunately, motorists who have been enticed by beautiful and futuristic designs from motor shows are left with very watered-down designs when they reach the showroom floor. We are changing that with models like the Omoda 5.”
As such, it has extremely smooth lines that appear almost liquid, while also introducing a few design firsts to the crossover segment.
The interior of the Omoda 5 promises to be a treat for the eyes as much as the exterior is.
Two integrated and curved 10.25-inch high-definition digital screens take centre stage and will provide all vehicle and entertainment information, while also offering easy and intuitive controls of driving, comfort and entertainment settings.
Every and any power source
The Omoda 5 platform, being one of the first new models to ride on Chery’s next-generation architecture, is immediately ready for both internal combustion engines and new-generation propulsion, such as hybrid, electric or hydrogen systems.
The platform also meets global five-star safety ratings, proving that performance and adaptability do not have to come at the expense of safety or structural integrity.
The Chery Omoda 5 is expected in South Africa in 2023.

Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Executive Review
The dust has settled on Chery’s monumental return to South Africa, but that hasn’t stopped the growing Chinese brand from expanding its portfolio with more SUVs for our market. Set to slot in between its two existing models, the latest Chery Tiggo 7 Pro comes with all of the bells and whistles that are now expected from the automaker in the hotly contested compact crossover segment. We spent the day with the newcomer in Gauteng to get to grips with the Chinese marque’s latest offering.
The affordable SUV segment grows by the month, we sound like broken records repeating this tune but manufacturers know the value of this lucrative market that South Africans have taken to like a fish to water. Fortunately, in the compact crossover SUV segment there aren’t many bad products, if any at all but contentiously, the growing segment is host to attractive vehicles which at the same time can lack true authenticity in terms of styling. There seems to be a safe recipe with an exterior aesthetic that most automotive designers adhere to, don’t take anything away from a modern and elegant design but there are cues that mimic Chery’s chief rival; Haval and their H6.
As with the Phil Simmons penned H6, the latest Tiggo 7 Pro looks to get a sizable chunk of the proverbial compact crossover SUV pie since it is a competitive and well-equipped offering. Powering the sub-1,5-ton vehicle is the same 1,5-litre turbocharged in-line-four petrol motor found in the Tiggo 4 Pro. The 108 kW and 210 N.m mill are coupled to a CVT which delivers power solely to the front wheels, unlike its fellow Chinese counterpart which has four-wheel drive optionality. This is also the same motor that boasts impressive after-sales support, but more on that later.
Its performance is commendable when lugging the unladen weight around, with sufficient grunt available for highway overtakes while retaining ample comfort with the continually shifting cogs in the CVT of little notice to the occupants within. Foot-flat scenarios may warrant that the mill gets a little bit noisy but for the most part, it is quiet and comfortable with the momentum from the power being delivered in a linear and constant manner. The plush and softly sprung suspension instils the same level of refinement, particularly over some poorly maintained Tshwane side roads. It also provided great comfort when traversing over rippled sand roads en route to the lunch destination for the day, with deeper crevices expectedly being the only real noticeable aspect of the journey.
The straight and flat highveld roads leading to the destination didn’t provide many opportunities to experience the latest Tiggo 7 Pro’s cornering capabilities but we found solace in the cruise control system and driving assist which simplify long, open road travels. The tech-filled Executive model which we tested boasts a shopping list of features which includes blind spot detection, lane departure warning, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking to name a few. That being said, there were a few niggles that are yet to be sorted which include the overly-enthusiastic hazard lights coming alive at every braking instance, even in scenarios of gentle deceleration. The few scenarios of low-speed cornering did present a considerable amount of body roll and weight transfer for a vehicle of this stature but nothing alarmingly uncontrollable that isn’t already expected from models churned out in this segment.
Onto the topic of fuel consumption; From our limited encounter during the day which was dominated by highway routes and flowing country roads, our round trip of 200 km returned an economy figure that hung around 10 L/100 km. Despite being freshly out of the box and without run-in mileage, this still makes Chery’s claimed controlled cycle of 6.8 L/100 km seem slightly unrealistic although less enthusiastic driving on a car with more than 200 km on the clock might yield a slightly lesser number.
Jumping aboard the commodious interior and like the Haval H6, the new Tiggo 7 Pro offers a level of luxury and refinement unheard of at its price point. Familiar-looking air vents and components line the dashboard which is covered in soft-touch materials with a 7-inch digital centre information panel in front of the driver and a centrally positioned 10.25-inch LCD screen. The user experience is identical to its other siblings with clear resolution on both. A 360-degree around-view-monitor and park distance control make navigating the subcompact crossover SUV in tight spaces an easy endeavour while music or navigation can be screen mirrored, via cable, onto the screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Tiggo 7 Pro boasts a fair bit of utility too, with a boot capacity of 475 litres which retracted seats can yield as much as 1,500 litres of cargo space.
The newcomer will entice customers with its brimmed technology features that trump other competitors but the Tiggo 7 Pro manages to pip the Haval H6 in terms of pricing and has now become one of the most affordable options in the segment. Trim levels are divided into the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Distinction which will set buyers back R409 900 while the top-spec and fully loaded Tiggo 7 Pro Executive will come in at an affordable R444 900.
Seven colours are available to spec the Tiggo 7 Pro in, which includes: Khaki White, Silver, Vanilla Blue, Caledon Ash (grey), Blood Red, Carbon Crystal Black and two-tone Khaki White with Carbon Crystal Black roof or Blood Red with Carbon Crystal Black roof.
Chery will once again offer their 10-year/1-million-kilometre engine warranty for the solitary motor in the range. All Tiggo 7 Pros will also include a 5-year/60 000 km service plan, a 5-year/unlimited kilometre roadside assistance programme, a 5-year/150 000 km general mechanical warranty and offers a comprehensive.
Like both of its predecessors did, the latest offering from the Chinese automaker should entice consumers looking for an affordable SUV that can do the daily commutes and double up as a holiday hauler. Just keep your eye out on that fuel economy gauge when you do.

Chinese Auto Brand Chery Raises The Bar With Tiggo Range
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro - the big brother of the Tiggo 4 Pro - is one of those few remarkable newcomers to the market. It’s really difficult to fault, and deserves consideration on its own merits, rather than just its price tag. It competes with Toyota RAV4, Renault Koleos, Haval H6 and Nissan X-Trail and Qashqai.
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is perhaps the most-European Chinese car out there at the moment, with a decidedly Germanic driving experience and similar attention to small details. I know we still drive the badge but look at Haval. They literally disrupted the local market with a good product and aggressive marketing. Some buyers are realising that a premium name isn’t really worth that much extra money, anyway – especially when the alternative is so agreeable! The Chery Tiggo feels almost European in concept and execution. Only at a much, much lower price.
Styling
With a classy mix of sharp edges, lean surface detailing, and pronounced but neatly-integrated character lines, the Tiggo 8 Pro cuts a surprisingly upmarket dash. While styling cues from other manufacturers can be detected, it all meshes into a harmonious whole that still manages to look quite distinctive. The “starry night” grille is large and imposing, and it looks like nothing else out there. Flanked by squinting, slim LED headlights and underscored by large air intakes and silver skid-plate detailing, the Tiggo 8 Pro has an assertive front end and drew compliments from all onlookers.
In fact, the Tiggo 8 Pro’s appearance was praised from all angles, with the Audi-like detailing in the LED tail light clusters and sequential indicators getting particularly widespread approval. The 18-inch alloy wheels with their diamond-cut finish also received positive feedback.
Overall, the appearance is about as attractive as a mid-sized SUV could be, enhanced on our test car by the intriguing metallic/pearl purplish-blueish-blackish paintwork and well-integrated trim strips. And, crucially for Chery, the Tiggo 8 Pro also looks quite a bit more expensive than it really is.
Interior
The seats are astoundingly put together and upholstered in super-soft, medium-brown leather with classy-looking diamond-pattern stitching. There are matching brown inserts in the door cards and on the dashboard as well, giving a consistently upmarket ambience to the cabin.
The seats themselves are superb, and easily accommodated this writer’s 1.93-meter frame in supple comfort. Particularly noteworthy are the “wraparound” head restraints, which evoke the seats you’d enjoy on a business-class flight, and adds something more to set the Tiggo 8 Pro’s cabin further apart from the herd.
Oddment stowage for the front seats is generous, with voluminous door bins and cubby holes, cupholders, a refrigerated centre armrest/box (with various configuration options and two USB ports), and a split-level centre console. While there’s no oddment space in the piano-black upper portion of the console, the lower level houses a convenient and fairly deep tray, as well as a wireless charging pad.
The other seats are pretty comfortable, too, with lots of cabin space and a large measure of adjustability for the second seating row. These seats can slide (in a 60:40 split) fore-and-aft, and features individual backrest angle adjustment as well, thus allocating space between the rearmost two seating rows.
If the second row is set midway between its extremes, there’s even decent space in the third row to accommodate two average-sized adults back there. This is unusual, because the 6th and 7th seats in vehicles of this type are generally only suitable for smaller occupants, and then only for short trips.
Other comfort concessions for the rear cabin include a separate air-con system with its own compressor, fan, and lots of integrated air vents. This is only fitted in high-spec “Executive” trim as tested, however, the base “Distinction” trim makes do with a mere 2-zone climate control system.
In 5-seater mode, the cargo area is cavernous, with up to 892 litres available in a luggage compartment that’s wide, deep and long.
Obviously, this takes a hit when the third seating row is erected (via simple but sturdy pull-straps), as the luggage space drops to only 193 litres in this configuration. On the upside, rear privacy glass is standard and helps to keep the contents of the cargo hold hidden from prying eyes.
As for the cabin’s design, it again mirrors some upmarket influences in its styling and detailing. There’s some Mercedes in the front door cards and a fair bit of BMW and Audi in the dashboard. But, yet again, it doesn’t look like a mash-up as much as it looks like it borrowed from the best in the business, before integrating it all into a homogeneous whole.
The build quality comes with high-quality material and fine finishes evident almost as far as the eye could see. Sure, the switchgear doesn’t feel as solidly weighted as you’d find in an Audi, for instance, but it comes so close that most occupants won’t ever notice. And, while the lower dash and door cards are trimmed in hard plastic, it’s well-made and didn’t emit a single rattle or squeak in a week’s worth of driving.
Standard equipment
Let’s start with the screen setup. In front of the driver is a digital instrument cluster, measuring 12.3-inches in size. This is a bit excessive, really, because the cluster’s graphic design contains lots of blank space.
It’s easy to read, but the absence of a customisable driver’s display is a bit of a let-down: Allowing a driver to choose different display styles should be easy enough for a system with these capabilities and resolution, and the “revolving drums” which indicate speed and engine revs can become distracting after a while. Perhaps a future software update will eventually allow more options, but for the moment, this is a strange omission on the Tiggo 8 Pro’s spec sheet.
Performance and driving impression
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is powered by one of Chery’s award-winning turbo-petrol engines with direct injection and intelligent control.
The 1.6 TGDI was lauded in the China Heart engine competition for its high-tech design, which allows the engine to reach previously unheard-of levels of efficiency that benefit both power and fuel consumption. As fitted to the Tiggo 8 Pro, the 1.6 TGDI delivers a maximum power output of 145 kW at 5 500 rpm and a solid 290 Nm across a notably wide powerband between 2 000 rpm and 4 400 rpm. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT) that delivers power to the front wheels.
To best utilise the power and smooth engine characteristics, Chery has tuned the electric power steering system for improved feedback and has added Standard, Eco and Sport driving modes. The steering further offers Eco and Sport driving modes, where the feedback and feel of the steering system adjust to the driver's intent.
Safety
The full house of standard features continues when the safety specifications are examined. Executive trim includes a plethora of add-on safety features, to go with the Tiggo 8 Pro’s standard package of 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera system, rear parking sensors, stability control, emergency brake assist, rear ISOFIX child seat anchors, and a 5-star C-NCAP crash test rating.
That camera system is particularly impressive, and is on par with the top-shelf systems which are generally offered as options with most premium-branded SUVs. The display quality is crisp and easy to interpret, the dynamic reversing guidelines are intuitive, and it can even be set to automatically show the view down the car’s side when turning the steering wheel in either direction.

Will SA Drivers Buy A Chinese Car? Here Are The Votes
Are South Africans ready to put their motoring prejudices aside and buy Chinese cars?
Recently TimesLIVE ran a poll asking South Africans whether they are ready to put their motoring prejudices aside and buy a Chinese car.
Earlier cars from that country were very affordable but suffered build quality issues and Chinese carmakers quickly discovered that local motorists appreciate value for money, but they don’t do cheap-and-nasty. A number of brands, including Geely, Chana and Chery, quit the country after their budget-priced cars failed to attract decent sales.
Now Chery and Geely have returned with a range of new vehicles that are almost unrecognisable from their uninspiring predecessors. The new Tiggo SUVs have impressive levels of modernity, safety and sophistication with prices that still undercut more well-established brands. The same applies to Haval, with modern new offerings such as the H6 and the Jolion, and its sales have soared as a result.
The poll sought to determine whether South Africans felt Chinese cars had crossed over into credibility, as happened with Korean brands Kia and Hyundai a number of years ago.
The tide seems to be shifting, though the poll results were close with 36.71% of respondents saying they would buy a Chinese car and 34.01% saying they wouldn’t.
The poll dug a little deeper and 21.19% said that for the same price they’d rather buy a second-hand car from a better-known brand, 7.15% said they owned a Chinese car and were happy with it, and only 0.94% said they owned a Chinese car and were unhappy with it.
