why I think Reputation (Taylor's Version) will not be announced tonight or anytime soon.
It’s highly theorised that Reputation will drop tonight, and although part of myself is clowning for it to happen, I think it’s highly unlikely.
To start off, a lot of the ‘easter eggs’ are really far-fetched, and despite Taylor loving an easter egg and sometimes pulling the most amazing easter eggs, I don’t think they’re as complicated as people are making them out to be. Some ‘easter eggs’ are feasible, like the ’22’ hands changing in recent nights (although I don’t know what 55,000 means to be honest), some theories such as ‘123’ - August 20th being 123 days from April 19th (The Tortured Poets Department) seem like a stretch, considering 1989 TV had easter eggs like a sign in the ‘I Can See You’ Music Video and having a blue outfit colour scheme for an Eras Tour show. As much as I love to clown (and trust me I do - I wanted to believe Reputation TV was gonna drop with TTPD) I don’t think an announcement is going to happen until at least later in the tour and then a release at the end of the year.
The Tortured Poets Department was released four months ago and is one of Taylor’s greatest musical feats in my opinion - with 31 songs in total. The last album she announced that was not a re-record was Midnights in October 2022. There was then a 7 month long gap between Midnights and Speak Now (July 2023). Whilst on the Eras Tour, Taylor has dropped both Speak Now and 1989 (October 2023) re-records, as well as The Tortured Poets Department. Although I don’t think it would be impossible for her to have recorded some of Reputation whilst on tour, the likelihood of her managing to create and release 4 albums during this time whilst juggling a world tour (with a changing setlist) is improbable.
It’s also important to take note that The Tortured Poets Department is still charting, so to release a re-record (especially such a highly anticipated one) seems like a waste in terms of numbers/position, as she’d literally be competing against herself in the charts. The Tortured Poets Department still has so much more potential in terms of streaming and possible releases (The Anthology vinyl/CD etc) so there would be no need for Reputation to be dropped other than Taylor wants it out there. Strategically speaking, letting TTPD run its course for a few more months so it can bask in the attention and love it is getting is better than trying to rush out Reputation during TTPDs ‘era’.
I genuinely think Taylor just enjoys trolling us because she knows her fanbase has gotten more observant with easter eggs, but I hope we can all still clown together every time something suspicious happens :) I appreciate what Taylor has given to us already (the rerecords, a new era we weren’t at all expecting with TTPD etc) so all of my theorising is just done for fun and jest!
UPDATE - I do think she could possibly announce Rep during the VMAs, but also I think she could just use it to drop more teasers and get us to clown once again. But we don’t mind. I also noticed that she sometimes drops a music video including tour footage when she's ending an era...which could mean nothing x
