our third place. | https://vimeo.com/507690090
The first place is also known as home. Second place, as work or school/uni. And the third place are social public places such as cafés, libraries, clubs etc.
Due to the pandemic home and workplace become one. It’s one place less. Does the third place gain more importance? Apparently yes.
Due to the pandemic, people are forced to adapt to the changes it has in the different places. As the first and second place are becoming one for many people [work-home/home office; studies-home/online learning], the third place -more or less- disappears. The loss of the third place has affected many people in their private lives.
Socialising seems unbelievable in the times of the pandemic. This art project’s goal was to create a third place. Celeste Mae organised a meet up with their colleagues from the University, varying in the different departments. Their goal was to have an authentic meet up between familiar faces as well as new ones, getting to know them for the first time. If someone were to watch the film two years ago it must seem so absurd, that sitting by a bonfire with people is being portrayed as something out of the ordinary.
In history, coffeehouses played a big role in social acts. In the french revolution, it was the place to plan and organise.

This project does not only bring artists together, it also gives them a voice. It could be seen as a collective art project, to which in artist’s term is nothing more than working together.
Arbeit. Arbeit? Kulturarbeit. In some countries work by artists are called culture work. Implementing that it is not a regular work being practiced. Who gets to decide what work is? In times of the corona pandemic there is a clear hierarchy of who gets to work. What is being prioritised.
I miss sitting in a coffeehouse.
