Olivia & Louise Harrison...my thoughts (for what it is worth)

This is a post I have been thinking about writing for a while but really wanted to avoid. I know that the story about Louise Harrison first appeared in the Daily Mail a couple of years ago. I hope I can do a complex topic justice without being disrespectful to any party or offending anyone. But I have been so concerned with the amount of trolling Olivia has had to deal with over the last two years I feel the need to share some points. I don’t know what the truth of what has occurred between Olivia and Louise. And I am not entitled to either. And as Jimmy Love sang - there are two sides to every story.

I just want to say to begin with I want to note I know Louise has had a hard life with migration, divorce and the loss of her son. I wish her a comfortable and peaceful existence.

It is worth noting some things about the story as it appeared in the Daily Mail

Firstly the headline and story is couched in the most emotive and sensational language that can be imagined. Even some of the commentors point this out.

Secondly the Daily Mail/Fail has a history of publishing inaccurate anti George and anti Olivia stories as myself and others have pointed out at other times ( see http://aug72.tumblr.com/post/82214337087/george-and-the-daily-mailfail) before. Some I will mention are the story about George supposedly being annoyed at only being offered an OBE and the extracts they used (along with the headlines) from Graeme Thomson’s biography of Georg ‘Behind that closed door’. Thirdly it has to be pointed out that it is evident even from this story that Louise receoved financial support from the Harrison family for several years after George’s death.

One person who commented on this story pointed out that the timing of this story so close to the anniversary of George’s passing was unwise on Louise’s part. It also has to be said that press coverage like this is not likely to help in a situation where diplomacy and discussion are needed.

It also needs to be pointed out that Louise has moved to California since this story appeared. She also got to speak at the George Harrison memorial tree replanting in Los Angeles last year (on George’s birthday) with Linda Arias (Olivia’s sister) present- indeed Linda made a point of mentioning Louise. Clearly this could not have occurred if Olivia had not allowed it.

But I recently had this review of Louise’s book sent to me (thank you- you know who you are!). Sara at meetthebeatleforreal points out a number of things about the book which for me and others (check the comments!) cause a great deal of unease. I will only say that Louise refering to Olivia in the manner that she is quoted to in this review is deeply, deeply problematic.

It is on record that for whatever reason George and Louise had issues in their relationship. There is even evidence of this in a letter George wrote to Pattie in 1971. In the review of Louise’s book above it is noted she did not meet Pattie that much during her marriage to George. I am not going to speculate why this estrangement happened or who was responsible. These things happen in families and are painful for all involved. Even Louise admitted previously that George and herself had been estranged and only had been reconciled shortly before his death. It was apparently Olivia who persuaded George to meet up with Louise.

I have seen Olivia subjected to some appalling trolling on this issue. Some of this trolling shows thinly veiled racism. This in and of itself causes me deep concern. I just hope I have made some points about this topic that may be useful and show that Olivia does not deserve this trolling. I feel she has handled the situation with her usual grace and dignity however.

Multiple weird dreams last night
