“Not every book can be Lord of the Rings level good, but she tried, cut her some slack. I don’t think the film industry would’ve picked it up and hired your ass if it was actually stupid,” Maggie retorted quickly, with a pointed look at the Sandy-haired man. He was infuriating, even on his best days, but there was something about him that kept her around instead of shrugging communications off on someone else. “You’re decently attractive,” was all she offered with a roll of her eyes, not giving him the satisfaction he probably wanted. She leaned over him to snatch up the script. “Caroling. I don’t need any blame if you wipe out on the ice and mess up that pretty face of yours.”
Tumblr media
“Unless you’re trying to look like a Scrooge in front of the author that holds your very film in the palm of her hands, then yeah.” Maggie leaned against the couch, the fireplace blazing with warmth, a fairly intimate setting for two professionals who ended up working together by ironic chance because the author of the book used to piece together the film’s architecture wanted the opinion of her editor on set for some reason… but she knew the boundaries she was toeing. “Feliz Navidad, Hunter. Time to get in the spirit.”

The audacity of the man to, not only approach her, but to somehow know exactly how she was going to feel before she even knew how she felt. Of course, it was slow going these days, her thought process — her brain melted by sleepless nights and crying, oh god, so much crying. Who knew something so tiny could be so loud? Maggie would have likely been at home, crying too, if it weren’t for her friends finally convincing her to get out of the house after three months. Seeing the man’s face, almost a mirror image of the soft, wrinkly one she woke up to every hour on the hour definitely made her want to cry. Or throw something. Or both. “I should throw this drink at you,” She hummed, stirring the ice and brightly colored liquid in her glass. “But it’s… actually pretty good, so I’m not going to waste it on someone that doesn’t even have the decency for a follow up text with… literally any information about them. Did you know that you’re actually a ghost? Like, not only did you straight up ghost me, but you’re also impossible to find online. How is that possible? It’s the twenty-first century, everyone is searchable.”
open to anyone! our muses met and hooked up at this same new years party 1 year ago but haven't spoken since. roman is a spy so ... they kinda have a good reason for ghosting not that your muse knows that.
Tumblr media
roman leaned against the bar. "so, should i say something lame like, 'fancy seeing you here', or will that just piss you off?" if the other person even remembered them, that is. a lot could happen in a year; he would know.

Samir had just been teasing when he mentioned their current situation being a date, but he was even more amused with how flustered the other man got, and the grin on his lips grew even more, his confidence no longer wavering now that he knew they were apparently on the same page. “Calm down, I was just kidding,” he reassured Reggie, a hand placed on his shoulder as they stepped into line to order. “I mean, not about the dating. I’d… actually really like to do that — go on dates with you. Including this one if that doesn’t totally freak you out.” It didn’t seem like it, based on the others questions about the tree lighting date and Sam reluctantly dropped his hand from the man’s shoulder and nodded. “Of course, yes to all of that. I’ll even make sure to conveniently forget my gloves so you’ll have to take my hand to warm it up.”
Tumblr media
The flush of the other's skin gives him a confidence that grows within seconds, now knowing that he might actually have a chance at this thing. It allows Sam to play off how he's truly feeling inside, heart thumping against his chest as though it would beat itself out of him at any moment. "Yeah, well, I didn't really know that at the time," He finally responds, a bit bashfully, with a shrug that attempts to convey a nonchalance that doesn't exist when his veins are a mixture of anxiety and excitement. A softly muttered thanks falls from his lips as he enters the coffee shop through the door held open by Reggie and it was his turn to flush at the action. After weeks of daydreaming while combing the aisles of toy stores or sanding down homemade rocking horses and little pull toys to donate to the fire station's toy drive, it was hard to believe that something was actually happening because of it. "Wait..." Samir trailed off, stopping suddenly and turning to the other with a faux-confused grin, "I thought this was already a date?"

“You’re happy? Okay…” June nodded, though she was far from convinced. Part of her didn’t think another argument was worth it, not now, not after everything. One more night and then a flight out of there, she could handle that, right? “They’re not worse than they were when we met. I know what happy looks like.” Maybe she’d had a few too many glasses of whiskey, but that didn’t have an affect on her eyesight or what she knew, deep down, to be true. Reading the other was like reading a book she’d been through a million times, dog-eared all of the pages, highlighted things she wanted to remember… it was always that simple. A sigh tumbled from her lips and her fingers fidgeted with the glass on the table in front of her. “You know I can’t do that. I have work and… I just can’t.”

"Oh no, over my dead body," Sunny adamantly shook her head, thankful that any proof of it was far from where they were in that very moment. The tap to her nose caused a soft chuckle to fall from her lips and she reached up to snag the other's hand in hers, pressing a gentle kiss to the smooth skin. "You wouldn't believe it even if you saw it, I had braces, glasses, the whole shebang. I was a total nerd too." Thankfully, she'd found her place in the world sooner rather than later, but it was definitely an interesting period in time for her. She would've far preferred being the kid with the gapped-tooth smile instead of the one struggling with neglect and being passed back and forth between a family who didn't want her and one that wanted to give her the world. "But... if you're like, really good this Christmas, maybe I can show them to you when we visit and... you meet my parents...?"
Tumblr media
While Peyton was teasing Sunny about having people over, she really wasn't all that fussed about no one seeing the ornament. Most people had something like that from their childhood hanging around, though admittedly it was usually their parents that hung onto it. But Peyton's mother had posted it to her when she'd moved into her first apartment and had her very first Christmas tree. And she'd hung onto it ever since. Though she hadn't really planned on Sunny seeing it. A hum left her lips when Sunny insisted she hadn't had an awkward kid stage. She could believe that. A hand raised, gently tapping the blonde on the nose when it scrunched up. "Well lucky you." She replied, before the other admitted that she'd had an awkward teen phase instead. "You? Noooo. I don't believe it." The redhead insisted, head shaking, the corners of her lips twitching up into a smile. "I'll have to see it to believe it." @catastrophicxfailure

"There's an open bar?" Her tone raised from the slightly miserable confusion it'd been in earlier at the mention of alcohol that she didn't have to pay for, her lips curved into a flustered grin. "Did I say I can't believe you talked me into this? What I meant to say was thank you for inviting me to accompany you, you magical, generous, unicorn of a human being."
Tumblr media
Maya was set to dash in the direction of the bar, ready to take full advantage of the free alcohol they were offering, but she paused a moment and took in the other's expression. "What are you doing here, anyway?"
"Yeah, well, I didn't want to come alone. Enjoy the open bar, it'll be a good time." Juniper replies, nonchalant attitude apparent in the way she's carrying herself, the expression on her face. "If you try it might actually be enjoyable."

It felt good to have the other woman’s hand in hers, even if she wasn’t foolish enough to believe it was in any way but friendly, despite how much she discovered she craved the sign of affection and how much she was enjoying the fact that it came from Evelyn, of all people. Ginny wasn't about to ruin her friendship over what she considered new and fleeting feelings born out of a starvation for touch with someone she was emotionally connected to, but damn if the way the Christmas lights twinkled in the other's gaze and the way the spiked cocoa warmed her body didn't make her want to risk it all. "Okay, but you can't argue with free work," she pointed out with a teasing grin. "Cars are expensive, probably saved yourself a few thousand bucks when you dated him."
She couldn't help but notice, though, how something stirred in the pit of her stomach at the idea of her friend and the mechanic, something distasteful, something... jealous? Instinctually, her grip on the other's hand tightened just slightly. "I got it out, but uh... still working on setting it up. It seems foolish, you know, just doing it for me. I put the lights outside up... a part of me still hopes she'll see them and come home."
Tumblr media
"I like that thought," Evelyn agreed. "Less crowd and just us." She'd known Virginia long enough and been through the ups and downs to feel a certain special sense of belonging with their friendship. Lately Evelyn had become even more fond of their time together, but perhaps it was simply the holiday making things feel warmer and bright. "I've never done lights on my place myself except for you remember that tragic year I dated the mechanic and he helped me put them up. About the only good thing he did," Evelyn said with a soft laugh. "It does make all these downtown lights and decorations feel more festive though." She slowed her steps, hand in Virginia's keeping the other close as she eyed a shop with a cute tree and ornaments for sale.
"Did you do a tree this year for yourself? Even a small one?" Evelyn almost didn't ask knowing how complicated this time of year felt for the other woman, but also hopeful that she could find some small joys.

Sleep hadn't come quick enough, acutely aware of the minimal space between the two and only feeling a slight panic about being on ice skates the next day, June had laid there with her eyes open until sleep eventually came and stole her away. Sleeping hadn't been as nightmarish as she'd expected and she woke up warm and comfortable and she could only attribute that to the physical situation she found herself in the minute she opened her eyes. Nose pressed against golden strands of hair, arm wrapped around her best friend's waist, her own body tucked against Lila's as though it was meant to fit there. Her first instinct was to pull the other closer and even though she didn't, she also didn't make any moves to create a distance between them. They were already pretending, why not really sell it, right? And maybe, selfishly, she didn't mind the little taste of what could be for herself. It wasn't like she was going to kiss her best friend, it was just some harmless cuddling in a bed that was far too small for the two of them, right?
But a thought popped into her head and as soon as she felt the other woman stir awake, she let it tumble from her mouth. "Wait, would your family think it's weird if we don't kiss? That's a red flag, right? I mean... I'm a divorce lawyer and the amount of couples I see that don't kiss... it usually means they're at the end of their days. What if we don't kiss and your family doesn't buy this? Or worse, they think we're a bad couple? What if they think I'm an asshole?" She went on rambling, not even realizing her arm was still on the other's waist, or maybe she rambled because she was actively trying to ignore exactly where her arm was and how close they were at that very moment. If she ignored it, it didn't mean anything more. It couldn't.
Tumblr media
A chuckle slipped her lips as she raised a brow at her reasoning for never trying ice skating. "I promise you that no fingers will get run over when we go. Maybe a couple of toes…" She teased before shaking her head. "It'll be fun, and very safe. If you go down, I'm going down with you." June was right, it wasn't like they were complete strangers. At the end of the day, she did agree to help her but never did she think this would be part of the deal. As she shifted a bit under the covers, the two of them were pressed up next to one another, almost tempting Lila to see what would happen if she tested these waters. Her head was begging her not to sacrifice this friendship while her heart was telling her the complete opposite. The two of them had always had this connection, she wouldn't have asked anyone else to be her 'girlfriend' for the holidays besides June. As she went to turn the lights out, she moved her arm to rest behind June's pillow to see if that would make her pull away at all.
Silence set in between the two of them, and she could feel her heart almost beating out of her chest with how close they were. She didn't know how she was going to sleep at all being this close to June. "I know I've thanked you at least a hundred times today, but guess I can make it a hundred and one." She muttered with a chuckle as she pulled the covers up and over them a bit more. "Get some sleep, we'll probably need it for tomorrow." She teased as she moved a bit closer in the dark towards her.

She knew what Peyton was trying to convince her to do, and while she definitely wanted to show the ornament off to everyone they knew because how adorable was her girlfriend as a kid, Sunny wasn't going to go out of her way to show it off if the other was uncomfortable with it. However, it didn't mean she wasn't going to tease the redhead just a little bit more if it meant continuing to get a smile out of the other. "Awkward kid stage? Not at all," the blonde shook her head, nose scrunched in denial as her fingertips danced along Peyton's back, holding her close. "Even worse though... I had an awkward teen stage." Her statement came in the form of a stage whisper, as though it were the grandest secret she could've ever let the other in on. Thankfully, any proof of such was in the home of her lifetime foster parents, or just parents, really. "Unfortunately for you, those photos are safe and sound back in Chicago and there is only room for one masterpiece on our tree."
Tumblr media
Another hum left Peyton's lips when Sunny turned around and snaked arms around her waist, insisting that they needed to have people over to view the 'masterpiece', the redhead rolling her eyes, even as her own arms encircled the blonde. "Can't we just...treasure it ourselves?" Peyton asked hopefully, framing it another way, not admitting that she was still trying to keep people from seeing it. "Mmm didn't you have an awkward kid stage?" She asked, pouting a little. Though honestly, Peyton would believe Sunny if she said no, because the woman was stunning and Peyton really couldn't imagine her being anything but perfect. @catastrophicxfailure

No fun, maybe, but were they really having fun seeing each other for the first time in almost a decade in the middle of the night when the rest of the world, including them, were supposed to be sleeping? Ginny didn’t feel like she was having any kind of fun, though that could have been because she was the only one surprised by the appearance of her wife that night. At least Claire had some sort of time to prepare before showing up.
Her mouth opened, lips parted, about to argue just how not fun it was for her before an admission tumbled between them, one that was just as unexpected as the visit that night. Ginny was no stranger to how much, or lack thereof, the other’s mother meant to her. Even though it wasn’t something her wife had talked about, she ended up not even needing to. It was clear what Claire’s experience with her own mother was as soon as they became mothers themselves. She’d been a paramedic long enough to see the signs and even through the silence of the other, she knew.
“Good.” Was all the blonde offered, soft but firm. She didn’t know the specifics, never did, only the assumptions she’d made in her own head and if there was even the smallest bit of truth to them, she wasn’t upset at the news Claire brought. Some people were parents and for some reason, they squandered away their time with their kids, hurt them and made them feel worthless, and yet they had chance after chance with their children, never had them taken from them in the most horrific of ways. Ginny had no pity for those people. “She didn’t deserve your love even if you offered it.”
It felt miles from where they were when the car pulled into the driveway and her wife walked into the home they once shared, but it was impossible for the panic rising in her chest to not turn to concern when the tears happened and then… the question came and her heart, what was left of it after all this time, shattered. “There’s not a single doubt in my mind,” she confirmed, her hands in the pocket of the leather jacket still around her arms because if she didn’t put them somewhere, she was afraid there’d be nothing stopping her from reaching out for the woman in front of her.
“Remember when she started learning how to ride a bicycle without training wheels?” Ginny didn’t realize she’d started stumbling down a path she didn’t want to go down until it was too late and the words were leaving her mouth, words about their daughter. “I was home with her that day and she tried and tried so hard to get it… and then she wiped out. Complete road rash on her chin, a gash on her arm, and even though she knew I could fix it… she didn’t care. She wouldn’t stop crying until you came home and she was in your arms.” The blonde swallowed, the story causing her skin to crawl when she imagined their little girl, out there somewhere, unable to be in their arms. “You were her entire world. Bad moms don’t get that privilege.”
Tumblr media
"where's the fun in that if i had told you?" claire asked, but there was no longer any feeling in it. instead, she felt startlingly defeated - tired. she wanted to lie down on the couch, to bask in the smell of home, finally, but if claire sat down... she didn't know she'd ever be able to get back up. instead, she fidgeted in the middle of the hallway leading to the stairs, a very different, unsure version of herself that not many had ever seen. claire was used to wearing thousand dollar suits, she was used to her presence meaning something to those around her, she was used to dominating a room; she wasn't comfortable with feeling small, but damn if she didn't feel that way now.
when the question was posed, claire flinched away from it - a physical kind of reaction that she couldn't pretend didn't happen. she wanted to say the worst had already happened - the worst thing anyone could go through, the loss of a child, had already happened to them. the loss of her great marriage had followed. so, why did this hurt so much?
"my mothers dead." it was the first time she'd said it. and in the house that had housed so many memories - so many claire would like to forget and ones she would hold onto with tooth and nail, fighting back against old age in the many years to come. she would have liked to have forgotten about her mother, about her childhood too, but claire's memory was like a cathedral; vivid in its paintings of everything that had happened to her. claire had never really talked about her mother, but she was sure that ginny - with her expertise as an emt, and as a mother herself - saw the way that claire had shied away from things over the years, the way she'd jump at loud noises and hated yelling in the house. at first, the discussion of having a child had worried her so much that it kept her up at night. under the guise of working late, she would stay up in the home office and pace. because... what if she was the same as her own mother? she had vowed to never be like her, long before the discussion of children ever came up, but she doubled down on that when their daughter had been born. and when she had been placed in claire's arms for the first time...
claire hadn't realized that she was crying until the tears had made their way down her face and were dripping off her chin. she turned away from ginny then, wiping them hastily, telling herself that she wasn't crying for the woman who used to beat her, but for her daughter. "no great loss there," she added quickly, clearing her throat, "she never liked me, and i had no great love for her..." there was a but there that claire didn't add but could be felt in the conversation and it said 'but i had stupid hope that maybe one day she would find me and apologize.' it was a stupid belief, claire thought, but searched for validation in the one person who might be honest with her then. "do you think..." she paused, running her tongue over her lips, still tasting salt before she closed her eyes and brought a hand up to her temple. "do you think that i was a good mother?" despite what she did to me, she didn't ask but it was there all the same.
