You know what is under-appreciated? Sam and Cas. I mean, like, in general it’s under-appreciated, including by me, because I tend to view the show through the lens of Destiel (and, to be fair, the last few seasons of the show have more than encouraged us to do that) and also because Sam is a thorny character for me. He has enormous gentleness and is full of love but has a diamond core quality of grit that I find a little scary. And, yes, that goes perfectly with his narratives about the darkness inside himself and, if not accepting it, at least learning to live with it. And maybe it’s hard for me to write about those narratives because, maybe, it hits too close to how I feel too.

But that’s not what I came here to talk about. I came here to point out that in Dean’s world of contentment in 14x10 it’s Sam and Cas who are out working a case together–just them, no extra hunters, no Jack, no Dean. Dean is staying at home in a kind of semi-retired life where he only fights if trouble comes to him but he’s still a part of the hunter network. He’s not the new Bobby - he’s the new Ellen. But Dean sees his brother and his…Cas as warriors who work as a team. He’s not happiest when fighting alongside Sam. He’s not even happiest when fighting alongside Cas. He’s happiest when Sam and Cas are out there, being their badass selves and taking care of business. Together.

(Though arguably he’d be happier still if all three of them were on a beach together wearing their Hawaiian shirts and sipping their drinks. Endgame TFW is just J2M.)

So I’d like to just pause here to appreciate Sam and Cas, as a unit. I loved that aspect of this episode. I especially loved Sam’s desire to protect a millennia-old wavelength of celestial intent in human form from an archangel by shielding him with his body. Like, “HELL no, you’re not coming for Cas!”. Damn right, Sam. And it’s not because your brother loves him and you know how it affected him last time Cas died. It’s because you love him and you protect what you love.

Let’s hear it for Salmon Cas!! They also provided us with some great comedy.
