Meet Petunia Rhubarb! 

(Who doesn’t really look like one, but she never did! Haha!)

Here’s a process thing as well!

The bottom one was about to be the tutorial, but then it looked just EH.

Used Photoshop CS6 and default brushes.

We begin by blocking down our base colors with no lighting.

The back part is brightened up a bit using a light purple color and set on to overlay, with the opacity reduced to about 50%. 

The colors are punched up a little more, with using a light orange color, and set onto the Hard Light option.

White specks were painted in the background, and slightly blurred using the Gaussian blur tool in Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur less than half-way.

Overlayed another orange tint, but with the opacity set much higher, but still not exactly 100%.

Light Brown tint added as another overlay.

Reduced that about 60% on the Overlay setting. 

Brightened up the BG a little more by just adjusting the brightness.Also starting to paint highlights within the locked layer of the character.

To achieve this glow around the highlights, we take a light color, like off white or orange in this case, and paint around the highlights. It doesn’t have to be neat. Then we set it to a Gaussian blur, and then reduce the opacity to anything you think looks right. It can be as bright, or dim as you want it. Then we set it on Hard Light, or Overlay, depending on what setting looks best to you.

The sparkle dot things is using the same technique as step 9. Keep in mind that you’re using separate layers to achieve this effect.

A little more shine…

Added a Multiply setting over her body to make a shadow, usually using a desaturated blue color to make the shadows appear cool. Added some subtle bounce light around her hair, face and dress by using Overlay with brighter colors, Gaussian blur, and reducing the opacity so it won’t be too obvious.
