Moulin Rouge is so great, because Baz Luhrmann really said 'what if I make Orpheus and Eurydice, but it's MY version' so he added a raspy voiced, sleepy Argentinian, two middle aged men homoerotically singing Like a Virgin to each other, a breathy Nicole Kidman in enough glitter to bedazzle a whole country, John Leguizamo as a Famous french painter, Kylie Minogue as a Hallucinogenic Tinkerbell, and young Ewan Mcgregor as a hopeless romantic with an endless supply of pop hits he can instantly summon, and he created the most gloriously colorful, captivating, and camp movie movie musical of this century so far.
