I don't know that we'll ever know for sure.

There's a log from the Zariman ARG where Cavalero describes a domestic disturbance where a woman attacks (and kills) her partner, saying that he "had been replaced" and needed "to be purged."

I've always taken that as an example of Wally acting on the Zariman before the crisis, given his penchat for copying people's appearance in the Origin System and Duviri. There's a very similar incident in Duviri where Govio's gravestone notes he was slain by his Other.

Prior to the 1999 KIM texts, I'd assumed that the parents turning against their kids was similar: a mass delusion/belief that their kids had been replaced with Void Demons...

if Love is anathema to the Indifference, then how did Wally get all the parents on the Zariman to try and kill their kids?

did they just not love us enough?

or does parental love just not count for some reason?

The moment Eleanor sees Drifter smile on New Years Eve, a chill goes down her spine.

They'd had this discussion - he confirmed that the Indifference can shape-shift and possess, and said “It's never been me, only the Operator. But there's a first time for everything, right?”

Oh shit.

She doesn't dare check the mind of the man smiling at her for fear it'll drag her into its malevolent ocean to drown. Maybe if she lets her tongue loose, it’ll back off…

No such luck.

So she kisses it. Kisses the Indifference with tongue. Mustn’t let on that she knows what it's done. Then she says, “Sorry, no option for progressing to passionate intercourse tonight, okay?”

“Okay,” it says. (It's used to shape-shifting into a teen. She can tell because his beard is all wrong.)

“Love you, Drifter,” She says, and leaves. Her Drifter said that Love was the key to defeating the Indifference and by Sol it will be just as soon as she bursts out into the fading NYE party in the food court and rallies the Hex to find the man she loves.

“The Indifference just took Drifter!”

Magnetic Attraction (Drifter/Aoi)

When the Drifter begins again in 1999 with On-Lyne's hit breakup song The Great Despair humming in his head every time he talks to the Hex, Aoi is the first to offer a new melody.

Drifter and Aoi bond over music and making a difference in Höllvania. However, her manic pixie dream girl act masks that she's struggling the hardest with her horrific death at the reactor. She's already broken up with the last brooding boyfriend who took her emotional support and then turned his back when she needed him most. Gifts can only go so far in a time loop that ends in despair.

Love is time…and they’re running out of it.

oneshot idea i may write one day is the Hex playing a game of "dog or not" with Drifter, who confesses to not knowing what a dog is and is shocked every time they're shown a new breed of dog and told that it is, in fact, a dog. like;
