aeroMorph Jifei Ou, Melina Skouras, Nikolaos Vlavianos, Felix Heibeck, Chin-Yi Cheng, Jannik Peters, Hiroshi Ishii / 2016 The project investigates how to make origami structure with inflatables with various materials. We introduce a universal bending mechanism that creates programmable shape-changing behaviors with paper, plastics and fabrics. We developed a software tool that generates this bending mechanism for a given geometry, simulates its transformation, and exports the compound geometry as digital fabrication files. A custom heat-sealing head that can be mounted on usual 3-axis CNC machines to precisely fabricate the designed transforming material is presented. We envision this technology could be used for designing interactive wearables, toys, and packaging industry.

Finally someone is attempting to do this (although I hope it isn’t a scam) - Indiegogo campaign to produce footwear with e-ink displays to customize their appearance:

What if you could shop for the best shoe designs from people just like you? And when you liked what you saw, just press the button to buy, and instantly - the design is right there on your shoes.
Desktops, wallpaper, themes, skins, cover photos. We’ve gotten used to making everything our own. If we can’t put our own stamp on it, it just doesn’t feel right. That’s how we felt about the sneaker game. So we did something about it. The best artists you know are right in your neighborhood. Or on your favorite online forum. We see amazing designs every day. With creative minds at every turn, why are we still letting a handful of designers at big corporate shoe manufacturers decide what the next look is?
What if you could shop for the best shoe designs from people just like you? And when you liked what you saw, just press the button to buy, and instantly - the design is right there on your shoes. Stunning visuals, and even animation, ready to wear at the touch of a button and switch whenever the mood strikes.
