FLIGHT FORM CONVERSATION
"CONNECTED BUT ALONE"
A REFLECTION PAPER
“Connected But Alone” By: Mrs. Sherry Turkle
The Ted Talk “Connected But Alone”, got me thinking. My biggest take away from watching this was how reliant we are on our devices, that nowadays, people would have forgotten the life without technology; that they cannot imagine the life without cellphones and computer, which provide them more opportunities to communicate with others. In her talk Mrs. Turkle talks about what she calls the “Goldilock Effect”, which explains that many people who look for acceptance, companionship and interaction mostly go to their phones in order to seek that attention with others. I agree when she says that kids and adults in today society are connected but alone, I find it a big problem in our society because instead on relying on others, people relying on their phones. Like for example there are group of friends, colleagues and families that are gather together for multiple reasons, yet their minds are elsewhere, they deny the fact that they don’t focus on the person that in front of them, but actually they did, they didn’t notice that they are ignoring them because they are busy chatting, texting or even browsing on the internet. Because this days some people said that “I’d rather text than talk”. I agree with her a hundred percent when she says that too much control over what people choose to write in text or how close people choose to be to others around them may sound like a good thing, but it was actually not. For example when we want to avoid real face-to-face confrontation or being put in situations which we don’t have perfect control over, we tend to always rely on our phones instead –to send a text to that person that we need to talk to, but without having to look them in the eye or give them a chance to interrupt us. Not only that, but we also don’t want to be put in a situation where we can’t control ourselves. For example, if I’m hurt from someone, and I care about them but I don’t want to make a fight, I can easily send a text without having to face them and let them see how I’m really feeling. I don’t want to have a sad voice or a mad tone on my voice, so I just send a nonchalant text instead. In that sense, we lose real human connection. Not only that, but we don’t get to really experience the full view of people around us when we hide behind online communication. I love how Turkle mentioned that “yes, text are pieces of information that can even evoke emotion, but they still do not add up to form a full real-life conversation”. There is usually a lack in human impact. You can grin so big when someone text you “I love you”, but it is no match for someone telling it to you in person, and you being able to saw their faces and even their emotion, if they are telling the truth or not. In my opinion there is a deep connection that we need that cannot be merely satisfied with online forms of communication. However the more people are hiding behind online communication, the less this need for connection is being met and the more insecure and lonely people are becoming because of it. Technology is so appealing she states, because of the three reasons. It allows us to control where our attention is placed, we will always be heard and will never be alone. The main goal of her study and lecture is not to get rid of this devices, but to generate a self-aware relationships with technology, others and ourselves. Sherry Turkle’s theory on technology and how it is destroying our ability to be alone is extremely useful because it sheds light on the difficult problem of disconnecting to connect. By this, I mean being able to disconnect from devices to connect with not just others but yourself. By watching this presentation, I noticed how it stole my attention for a full twenty minutes, and I found myself not reaching for my phone once. This whole idea of being alone is terrifying and I thought it was rare. I hate being alone, usually even if I need to be alone I do not allow myself, I go to my friends house or watch anime, or series. I agree with some statements that contradict the way I live currently. The only issue I recognized was that I agreed and understood everything she is saying. Overall after this lesson I have a different outlook on using technology and social media. Starting today I plan on using my phone less often.

GLOBALIZATION
Activities in the past that has been changed by globalization.
1. Use a yellow pages phone book to find a company to do work around your house.
HOW DOES IT CHANGE ? Once upon a time, we felt perfectly comfortable flipping through the Yellow Pages and randomly calling a plumbing company to fix our pipes. Maybe we’d consult friends for a recommendation, but we often relied on trial-and-error. But consumer services like Angie’s List and Yelp have changed this game entirely. You can quickly read reviews of a local business, and if you like what you read, you can tap their number and automatically dial.
ADVANTAGES -it is cheap and very affordable - established resource, because when people move to a new home, they often make sure to take the phonebooks along so that they can easily locate new service providers, -covers geographic segments, -long term use -category benefits
DISADVANTAGES
-it has limited content -old fashioned -it has heavy competition -difficult to keep up to date -people must seek it out
2. Have a CD or record collection
HOW DOES IT CHANGE?
The mp3 generation has transferred all those songs to a digital index. And by using that you can simply download it and make your own playlist with your own favorite songs and singers.
ADVANTAGES -some of the records are mastered with better dynamics, -beautiful additional furniture -limited editions
DISADVANTAGES
-maintenance and care -easily damaged -surface noise -expensive -tracking errors -can’t sleep because you need to flip
3. Run to the store for a last minute gift
HOW DOES IT CHANGE?
In the past When we forgot a Mother’s Day gift! We should change our whole schedule so we can rush to the store and hurriedly pick something out. But today it change because if you have apps like Amazon Prime, Lazada, Shoppee and so on, there’s no need for that. Because you can simply order it the same-day and they delivered it immediately and have that gift curried to our front door.
ADVANTAGES
-stress relieving --if not satisfied with the product you can’t return -you can check the condition of the item or product
DISADVANTAGES
-Time consuming -you can’t shop anytime and anywhere -hassle if your time is limited -it’s not convenient for you -there is limited variety of products, so that you can’t choose what you like
4. Use a phone booth
HOW DOES IT CHANGE?
Phone booths in today's digital world are now a thing of the past. Because of the new invented gadgets, like cell phone, I-pad and so on, it so easy and convenient for us to use this gadget because all we need to do is to have a sim card and we can do whatever we want.
ADVANTAGES
-telephone calls add a personal and informative touch to your communication -it can get real time answers -it adds a personal touch to your marketing or customer services
DISADVANTAGES -outdated -law enforcement no longer could tap the public pay phone without a search warrant, and with that protection, phone booth became popular place for criminals to make calls and receive calls.
5. Courting
HOW DOES IT CHANGE ? Is a very big importance on the value of respecting the woman and her family and strictly adhering with proper rules set by society for pursuing a lady. But nowadays courtship revolves more on the liberalism of youth. If opposite sex were not allowed to mingle in public in the old days, these days, that is already possible. These has allowed courtship to be a little more lenient on youngsters. You can now meet a girl you like through a common friend, online dating app or on a party but never on a street as the same is still regarded as inappropriate.
ADVANTAGES -It protect people from potentially destructive emotional entanglements and the mind games of casual dating -it will make a strong bond -it involves their families, so that the couples are legal, and can have a guidance and support whether is a misunderstanding -you can evaluate the person you are dating
DISADVANTAGES
-the people are hoping that the one they dated is the one, -they’re not ready for rejection
6. Make photo albums
HOW DOES IT CHANGE?
Purists still love their dark rooms, because chemicals and photo paper can be so rewarding for the patient of the photographer. But few people pine for the days of dropping off rolls of film at a one-hour photo shop. Instead of pasting five-by-seven snapshots into your faux-leather album, most people will prefer the ease of photo-sharing services like Flickr and Amazon Cloud, or simply uploading it in your social media.
ADVANTAGES
-uniqueness -you can choose you own design, its size cover and layout to customize your book your liking -a great way of remembering your unforgettable moments -you can keep it for your children if you want to remember the old times -have a copy in hand
DISADVANTAGES
-time consuming -high cost, because you need to buy the materials that you need to use -it’s not long lasting because, if there is an accident, and it damaged it you cant restore it or make a new one because you don’t have a soft copy of it.
7. Reading Books
HOW DIES IT CHANGE? Nowadays we barely saw people who read books, unless they are intend to do it. And the only reason for that is because of the influences of technology, its availability and very convenient function catch their attention. Because they say that through technology they can do whatever they wanted to, they can read their lessons through internet, or PDF, they can easily browse their homeworks and projects.
ADVANTAGES
-good exercise for the brain -it is relaxing, because it provides a peaceful escape from stress -improve your vocabulary -you’ll become a better writer -it is entertaining -it is an invaluable research tool
DISADVANTAGES
-boring -time waster because you need to a lot time to find the books that your needed -you can’t distinguish if its reality or not
8. Face to face conversation and handwritten letters
HOW DOES IT CHANGE? The technology has completely changed the way we communicate. It change the way we engaged with one another. We’ve become so wrapped up with new technology that we’ve pretty much forgot how to engage and interact with each other face-to-face.
ADVANTAGES -it creates more motivation, because you can conquer you fear through it, it gives you more confidence. -it makes it easier to sense what a person is really thinking, for us to be able to know if the person is lying or keeping secrets from us or not. -it creates a strong bond
DISADVANTAGES -unsuitable for large-scale organization because it is scattered around the world, because having conversation with the distant people is impossible -ineffective when the listener is inattentive -problem of preservation, because there is a possibility of denial.
9. Proper etiquette and behavior and practices
HOW DOES IT CHANGE? In today society we barely see women who ware jean. They always ware mini skirt and dresses, people who smoked in public places, people who have tattoos and piercing all over their body. It change because of globalization, each countries influence each other when it comes to proper etiquette and behaviors. And they think that wearing that kind of clothes and doing those kind of things are making them more popular in the society.

DISADVANTAGE
-none
10. Watching Movies in the Cinema
HOW DOES IT CHANGES? It change because of the technology, and now we are in the digital era, we noticed that there are a decreased number of people who watch movies in the cinema, because some of them preferred to watch it online or buy some pirated CD’s.

Five Norms or Values, or Activies that present in a certain country but differ with others
1. Arriving Late In many parts of the world, arriving late to a social gathering is considered quite rude, but that’s not the case in South America. -In Chile, if the host says that dinner will be served at 8:00 PM, guests are expected to arrive around 8:15 or even as late as 8:30. Arriving on time or earlier could mean catching the host unprepared, and the offender will be regarded as “too eager” for a meal. -In Ecuador, arriving 15–20 minutes late is also considered being “on time,” and Brazilians consider meeting times “elastic,” showing up whenever they please.
2. Slurping in Japan
Most societies around the world have rules about table etiquette. For western cultures, noisily consuming food is considered rude. However, in Japan, China and Korea, making slurping sounds while eating has an entirely different meaning. This might have something to do with the fact that in western countries, noodles are properly consumed by twirling them on a spoon before putting them in the mouth. Making slurping sounds when eating noodles in Japan is a way of indicating that you’re really enjoying them. Some scientists even argue slurping invites air into the palate and actually enhances the noodles’ flavor.
3. Pointing with lips in Nicaragua While gestures of the hand are often subject to customary variation across cultures, few can claim this phenomenon extends to contortions of the mouth. In Nicaragua, it is common to point with the lips Wondering just how exactly a person points with their lips? It all starts by puckering up. Once a Nica has their duck face on, they can direct their lips forward or side-to-side to indicate what it is they’d like to point out. The lip point is typically used in conversation to indicate something that is happening nearby.
4. Kissing in France Pretty much every culture has specific rituals for greeting. Latin American cultures and the Romance cultures share the common custom of kissing both close loved ones and new acquaintances on the cheek as a form of salutation. Yet, the French seem to take this to a whole new level with the number of nuances involved in their kissing rituals. For one, the rules vary for men and women. Secondly, the number of kisses required to complete the greeting changes from region to region. What’s more is that French people are expected to greet each person at a party or gathering upon arrival whether they know the attendees or not. This is only a brief overview of the customary kissing practices in France.
5. Using the left hand for things In some countries, using the left hand for eating or other activities is considered quite rude and insulting. Oftentimes, cultures in these countries use the left hand for cleaning themselves after using the toilet, and, therefore, it is considered dirty. This rule applies to several places around the world including much of the Middle East, Sri Lanka, India and parts of Africa. To be safe, always use your right hand for greeting, handling merchandise, exchanging money, and, of course, eating while spending time in any of these parts of the world.

SQUENTIAL VS. SYNCHRONIC
SEQUENTIAL Some cultures think of time sequentially - as a line with one event occurring after another. Examples: In sequential cultures, business people give full attention to one task until completed and then begin another. In many other parts of the world, where we find sequential cultures, people regularly do several tasks at the same time. Activities are placed along that line in a sequential order, in a logical, efficient way. Time is the leash on which people walk. You need to ‘keep up’ with the passing of time, otherwise you’re ‘running late’. Because time is such a strict, inflexible guideline, it controls people’s lives to a large extent. In Sequential cultures like USA and Northern Europe their perception of time is: Time seen as a commodity Time is Money Being ‘on time’ is very important People do 1 thing at a time Time are precise Time is limited; Time is a resource that needs to be efficiently used ‘Meeting deadlines’ is commended
SYNCHRONICALLY Other cultures view time synchronically - as a constant flow or cycle to be lived in the moment, and as something that cannot be controlled or co-modified.
Example: In synchronic cultures (including South America, southern Europe and Asia) the flow of time is viewed as circular - with the past, present, and future all inter-related. When you make an appointment with a person from a synchronic culture, this should be viewed as an intention to meet at that time. The actual appointment can be rescheduled, start earlier or later than planned, and will take as long as needed to complete the goals for that meeting. Like in Southern Europe, Asia and South America their perception time is: Time is Circular Being late not so important Do many things at once Completing the task is more important than meeting deadlines

AFFECTIVE VS. NEUTRAL
Affective -Feelings shown easily Examples: In affective cultures like in China people express their emotions more naturally. Reactions are shown immediately verbally and/or non-verbally by using mimic and gesture in form of body signals. They don’t avoid physical contact, which is well known especially from Italians and Spanish when meeting each other very enthusiastic and with raised voices. Other affective countries are: USA Southern Europe France South America
Neutral - Thoughts more important than emotion and words are more important than body language Examples: In neutral cultures like Japanese tend to hide their emotions and don’t show them in public. They don’t express precisely and directly what they are really thinking which can lead to misunderstandings and certain emotions are considered to be improper to exhibit in certain situations. In general they feel discomfort with physical contact in public and communicate in a more subtle way which makes it difficult for members of other cultures to read between the lines and get the message. Other neutral countries are: -UK -Russia -Northern Europe

MICROBIOLOGY
Microbiology is the study of living organisms like Bacteria, Parasites, Viruses and Fungi. This organism has different types and shapes. Like for example in Bacteria, it has three shapes, the Spherical, Rod or Rectangular and Spiral. Like for example the E. Coli is a type of bacteria that is rod or rectangular shape. In parasites, there is what we call plasmodium falciparum which cause malaria. While in viruses there is what we call HIV, Chickenpox, mumps, measles and so on.
In microbiology, there is what we called the identification of microbes, to identify this we are using the gram stain reaction and culture media. In Gram Stain Reaction the we need to run some test to determine if the substance or bacteria is gram positive or negative, if it is Gram Positive the color of the substance is blue or violet, while if it’s Gram Negative, the color of the substance is pink.
The second method is the culture media, it is used to store and allow organisms to grow inside it. It has different methods in culturing it, the first one is the throat culture, this culture is done to determine if there is a presence of bacteria called ‘streptococcus pyogenes’ which caused sore throat. The second one is Urine culture, this is done to determine if there is a bacterial infection in the urinary tract.
In studying Microbiology, it is important that we need to understand how the cell works, because there is some microorganisms (bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi) that cause diseases. And the purpose of studying it is to treat those diseases and prevent it from spreading.
