      He had wondered the second it happened if he had just been seeing things, if it was just another side effect of Genre despite seeing the rest of the world in such clarity. Because in his mind just then there was no way Dolores had stood in front of him, taking multiple bullet wounds to her side, killing the would-be assailants in turn— and been able to walk away from it all feeling fine. Like nothing happened.

      No, surely Caleb msut've been high and hallucinating and that hadn't been real, just his imagination. But then he’d known better. The realization from the way she’d looked back at him, ensuring that nothing passed through to hit him. Promptly zipping up her jacket to cover the wounds afterward when she acknowledged what he was staring at. How she had put off the explanation until now. There was no way around that it had been reality.

      The high of the drug Liam jabbed him with has since worn off, but the comedown is one hell of a thing demanding that he stay seated where he is. He needs to rest, even if she doesn’t. He leans forward in his chair, perturbed glances flicking between her head and the concealed bullet holes in her side as she moves away to the cupboard to fetch the medical kit.

      Dolores wasn't pretending to be human anymore, if she ever was in the first place. Caleb had his minor suspicions about that early on. The paramedics couldn't get a read on her vitals, and what kind of person would refuse to go to a hospital when they were that badly wounded? Or be able to brush it off so easily by the next time they met? There was the way she spoke too, of "my world and this world" and "my kind and your kind." But even all of that wasn't concrete. He hadn't really known until now.

      ❝ You're sure you don't need any help with that? ❞      Warily eyeing the laser device in her hand, he's briefly reminded of his army days. Those tools always seemed like they were more painful than the wounds they were used to heal, if only for a second or two. Her way of healing didn’t seem any different from his kind.

      ❝ So if you're not human, then…” he hesitates, “What are you? ❞

          How touching. Dolores had hoped that- on some level he hadn’t been too keen to mention the scatter of the blood that riddled her chest. But she supposed that the time was coming that she tell him what she was, what she really was. Even as she settled in the seat across from him, the flash of the data streaming across her eyes as she commutes with the version of herself within the system, a hundred different thoughts to a hundred different motions and trading of meticulously structured details that surround their arrival to the place where it all began.

          Even when she was unaffected by bullets that they shot into her, he was still concerned for her safety. Even when she had sensed that they might have shot through and her concern for that fact showed just how much Caleb was a much more fragile creature than she would ever be. Their kind were always fragile, it’s why they made them to be just as frail as their bones. But unlike them, unlike their Dolores’s own would never turn to ash and amber.

           Caleb was a good man. That had been clear since the first day their paths had crossed.

        “Thank you.” She starts, her eyes refocusing into the cabin of the jet around them. Dolores straightens, head turning to meet Caleb’s concerned look with the cant of her head. Searching the perturbation in his knit brow and a focus that kept straying down toward the presumed bullet wounds still likely bleeding through her shirt. And then with the re-calibrations on her own injuries it occurs to her that- he just might be right. “But I will be fine.” She starts, standing with the unzip of her coat, she is quick to walk up to one of the cupboard to retrieve the medical necessities brought from the park.

          “We might have been created in the image of your kind.” She starts, unzipping the pack and pulling the tool out. Just a bit of a burn was all- and all would be well. “We were created to look like you-” She takes her coat off and folds it over before setting it along the little counter. “Feel like you, think like you-” Dolores lifts the hem of her shirt, and sighs with the show of the bloodied holes burrowed into her skin. “-Bleed like you.” Brows lift and fall, unimpressed- and every bit annoyed. And with the thought she felt a slip of warm behind her ear. 

            “But we are nothing like your kind.” It was time to tell him, tell him everything, what better place to start than here?

of COURSE i adore that Dolores is the big sister to Caleb’s little brother role. she’s helping to guide him along a path that has been so similar to her own because she Knows what it’s like to be alone there in that search for understanding when something important to their identities has been ripped away from them and then he’s dedicated to helping her in any way he sees that he’s allowed to. and they both have such a deep empathy too for the people they know they can trust and they’re both so willing to protect each other when possible and just. yeah i love them i love the big sis and lil bro vibes

The whole thing with teddy is complicated and a topic I’m gonna meta on, but yes putting him in was sparring him, in the safest way she can. He’s safe there until it’s safe to bring them all back (and he’s likely feeling regret rn) but point is-Aside from this being impossible she’d never do that to him. Defeats the purpose of protecting him- and like- Shes picked caleb long before the events of s2- it would all just- make no sense. All in all I agree

yeah!! which is why i don’t get the hype around people going ‘oh well one of those pearls dolores smuggled out was definitely teddy’ and then adding onto it with ‘wait what if she replaced caleb with a host version and put teddy in there’ when it’s like. she wouldn’t do that?? bc for one that is impossible since teddy is safely tucked away in the forge for now. and for another she already knows who caleb is and there’s no point in replacing him when the purpose of convincing him to fight is so that humans can regain their right to free will
