she will not come, for it is late and the night gives way to dawn as you stand tall for her and wait in the garden, though she’s already gone.
she waited for you the whole night in the midst of revelry and wine as you spoke to roses, red and white, until she grew tired and resigned.
and all night long, you didn’t show so she danced with the other men with her eyes trained on her feet below, with a glance at the door now and again.
but as you waited hidden, writing sonnets in her name, she gathered her coat and went back home, upset you never came.

irreconcilable
“sometimes i think it’s altogether better that i left when i did. much easier, too,” she sighed, a finger touching her cheek in thought.
“after all, i was on a path that led only to you. and yours led you straight away from me.” his eyes darkened, brow furrowed, but she pressed on.
“darling. it would not have happened. ever. i could never be so lucky; you are a dream. i cannot compare, i do not deserve you.
“it is not a matter of will but of design, fate, inevitability. i would have waited forever, but you wouldn’t have come.”
he made to protest, tell her she was wrong, but the words were slow to come. at his silence, she smiled wistfully and walked away one last time.
