The Melghat Tiger Reserve is situated in the northern part of the Amravati District, Maharashtra. it is one of the 9 tiger reserves recognized by Project Tiger. It is located on the Gavilgarh Hill, a southern branch of the Satpura Hills. The reserve has thick vegetation and a majority of teak trees. Displaying of 82 tigers and other animals like panthers, sloth bears, sambar, wild bear, and wild dogs, the Melghat Tiger Project has a total area of around 1677 sq. km.
Melghat was declared a tiger reserve in 1973-74 under the Project Tiger. In 1985, Melghat Wildlife Sanctuary was built. The Tapi river flows through the northern end of the Melghat Tiger Reserve, through a forest which lies within the catchment area of the river system.
Tourism in Melghat is dispersed along 4 centers/villages. Semadoh, Chikhaldara, Harisal & Shahnur. There are some extra stay facilities at Kolkas which is 14 km ahead of Semadoh.
The nearest railway station to reach Chikhaldara, Semadoh, Kolkas, Harisal is Amravati. Shahnur is closest to Akola. The nearest airport is at Nagpur approximately 250 km away.

Melghat boasts of glorious congregations of plant communities. Among the grasses relished by wild as well as domestic life are primarily the pavnya, the sheda, and the marvel, he says, adding that plantations of these grasses have been tried on numerous occasions but without much success. Interestingly, when a tiger has an upset stomach, it goes for the same medicines as dogs do it eats grass, He says “In the field, I have seen that the tiger prefers the wild sugar cane grass (sachcharum munja). In the dry naala beds of the MTR, one sees droppings and regurgitates of the tiger containing this grass,” he adds.
The best season to visit Melaghat is all season because, its beauty can be explored by Tourists anytime during the year however during monsoons starting mid-July till end of September offers the best views. The winters are cold with night temperature dropping below 5 degrees. The summers are good for animal sightings.So it offers different views and excitement during different seasons of year.
Accommodation facilities in Melghat are mostly run by forest department except the hotels and resorts at Chikhaldara which are run by private. Facilities are comfortable and basic in nature suiting the forest atmosphere where it is located.
People can reach here from different parts of Maharashtra as there is good bus connectivity.
