HEAVEN
is one of my favorite songs from Troye Sivan’s album, Blue Neighborhood, in part because it features the fabulous Betty Who, but because of it's message. It can be incredibly difficult to understand and accept your sexual orientation, and coming out is not an easy process. As gay people, we experience two realities. One of love and acceptance, where we know deep down in our core that what we feel is true. And another reality where we are simply misunderstood, and told that our lives are wrong or dirty. A reality where fighting for equal rights - and acceptance - is a necessity. I think Troye expresses that thought in this song and video, while also bringing religion into it.
Andy and I saw Troye Sivan perform at Terminal 5 in November, and it was such a great concert. I loved his performance with Dua Lipa of Mark Ronson's Somebody to Love Me, which thankfully somebody recorded (watch below). If you haven't listened to Troye's album yet, Here's his Blue Neighborhood album on Spotify.

Changes
Considering it’s been two years since my last real entry, I’d say that I’m long overdue for an update on my life. So here goes:
2015
In March of 2015, I accepted an offer to work as a graphic designer for an engineering firm in Manhattan. This job has reignited a spark in me that I thought had been extinguished long ago: my love for design. While I’ve worked as a designer in some capacity over the past few years, it isn’t something I’ve really pursued. The bulk of my work for this company is designing book covers - which is what I’d like to continue focusing on throughout my career (though it’s wise to be well-rounded).
Two months later, I did something I had wanted to do for exactly 15 years: I saw S Club 7 in concert. Only I had to go to London in order to do it. Oh, and I MET THEM.
Okay, so here’s the story: I fell in love with the British pop group S Club 7 when their second television series, S Club 7 in L.A., aired on Fox Family (now Freeform). I taped their marathons on VHS (oh yes), ran fan-sites for them, and made a lot of graphics featuring them. So when the Bring it All Back 2015 UK Reunion Tour was officially announced, I told my Andy that I was interested in going. After waiting a few seconds for him to process that, I told him I was definitely going to go. Once that sunk in, I asked if he would come with me. And once he picked his jaw up off of the floor, we booked our vacation to London (his first, my second).
We ended up renting a cozy flat from a lovely married gay couple, and booked mini adventures all around the city (and Wales, for the Doctor Who Experience). And of course, because I was seeing my pre-teen obsession in concert after waiting many years I purchased a VIP ticket - and met them! They were so nice (and beautiful) in person, and the show was everything I had expected it would be. I’m already itching to go back!
Later in the year, I decided to start selling designs on Society6. Unfortunately, I began to neglect it shortly after - but I plan on creating more for myself this year so expect my shop to be more active this year. The main event, however, of that summer was my venture into real estate with Andy. We attended many open houses - and fell in love and had our hearts broken - and began to embrace the inevitability of having to rent short-term until we found something. Only then did we stumble upon a charming pre-war building in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
Immediately after our closing (about a week before Christmas) we went to work fixing the place up to our liking and somehow were able to move all of our things from two separate locations - days before Christmas. I really need to give a quick shoutout to my parents for helping us out so much (and making that timeline a reality). It has been a dream of mine to have a home of my own for a very long time, and I’m ecstatic that I get to share it with my dream man (that’s him faithfully pushing the grocery cart while I snap photos).
2016
Last year started out quite differently: My 14-year-old cocker spaniel died after a battle with congestive heart failure. We had her since she was a puppy, so her passing hit us all really hard. She brought such happiness into our lives and she had such personality. When she was at the groomer’s the house felt empty - her absence was very noticeable. Anyone whose life has been touched by a dog can tell you: Life is always better with a dog by your side.
A few months later, I developed a pinched nerve and was in serious pain for a few days. I remember feeling helpless and scared that the pain would not go away. I reluctantly spent a few days in bed to heal at the advice of my doctor, and was ordered to take up yoga or some other similar exercise. I still have yet to follow through on those orders. Maybe 2017 will also be the year I become a yoga master?
Luckily, once the weather started getting warmer my year started to get a lot better. That spring, my friends and I formed a dinner-and-a-movie club so we could meet up after work to catch up, grab a bite to eat, and see a movie. I highly recommend checking if your work or school offers benefits programs - I’ve saved a ton with discounted tickets. Plus, there’s a lot to gain with movie theater loyalty programs - look into it!
I also became a Straight Talker. For those of you whose ovens aren’t preheated to a hot 450º, please head over to StraightTalkWithRoss.com and subscribe to Ross Mathew’s podcast so you can catch up! The show is the highlight of my week and brings a healthy dose of humor. Plus, the Straight Talk gang introduced me to Dolly Parton’s Straight Talk (which is a cinematic masterpiece - go watch it).
In the summer, I added Pokémon Trainer to my résumé and got a lot of exercise because of it! I’m looking forward to the weather warming up again so I can go exploring more (yes, I am one of the loyal few still playing).
September brought another great concert for me: Adele! Andy and I bought tickets for my parents for their birthdays and for all of their help with our apartment. Adele is tremendously talented and if you have the opportunity to go see her, you must. I’ve already resigned myself to needing to save up so I can attend her future concerts.
Circling back to Pokémon GO, Andy and I had the best Halloween costumes: Meet Pokémon GO’s Professor Willow and Team Instinct leader, Spark:
A few weeks later, our 16-year-old sussex-cocker spaniel mix also passed away from kidney failure. My parents had rescued him several years earlier and he also became a major member of our family. It’s a completely different experience from bringing a puppy home from the pet store to see grow old, especially since he was already older when we entered our lives. There's that characteristic unconditional love that all dogs inherently know how to give us, but there’s almost an extra depth to it.
We spent the holidays reminiscing and celebrating the love that we have for each other and that these two dogs blessed us with. I think we needed the holidays at that moment to set ourselves up for the best year: one filled with love and happiness. I’m so looking forward to what’s in store for us in 2017.

Had the best day yesterday! We went to Chester, NJ and checked out all of the shops we missed out on last year (but resisted buying anything!!). Had a delicious lunch, and then headed to @stonyhillnj for pumpkin picking and apple cider donuts... AND THE CORN MAZE! We finished in 45 minutes - they say it's supposed to take an hour and a half to two hours - clearly setting a record or something!
