Blog for me to post anything related to my little guys. Some doodles sometimes, mostly just the stuff I write in my progress journal. I'm making this on a whim so we'll see where it goes, I've just been thinking about them recentlyTags:#journalentries #BASAsketchbook #BASAart

Okay, going about this by posting a journal section every day or whatever I make. so
Journal Entry: Magic Lore!
Magic is cast through magic circles
once a circle is completed it takes effect, so teaching a spell is done without closing a circle (like literally)
a practice Mage can cast a spell in moments without looking
when a spell can be cast this way (once you've practiced it so much you can do it "with your eyes closed") you've mastered the spell and, with a staff, can cast instantaneously
mastering spells isn't a science, it's really vague how one masters a spell, generally speaking you have to draw the same spell over and over until eventually you can cast it without drawing it.
Basic spells are easy to master because you have to use basic spells to build larger spells. the more complex the spell the harder it is to master
Mage staffs allow for casting with less mana in general because the focus in the staff takes the strain off of casting
Circles are made of patterns and runes of ancient Magi. the Magi does spell things in Magi, it's a language that can be read but the pronunciation has been lost to time.
Mage levels are determined by skill
Beginners: Entry and Apprentice
Intermediate: Intermediate and Advanced
Expert: Graduate and Master
Master: Grand Master and Hero
early titles aren't officially given or learned, it's just a general way of categorizing Mage skill levels
higher levels are given in by others of the same level (like a teacher or master) or a school upon graduation will evaluate your level
Reevaluation isn't really a big thing, again if someone of that level recognizes you, you are that level, it's not an "official" thing
Evaluation is based on amount of spells mastered (which is why Mages often get evaluated lower than their full skill level because it doesn't account for non-mastered but known spells, speed of casting, or anything else. There isn't an official evaluation system in place and there should be...)
typically mages specialize in a type of magic
Basically: you are certified as an overall level, ie Master, but you can be specialized in specific types of magic and be a different level specifically in that area, like a Grand Master Flame Mage but a Master Mage overall (August)
Entry level Mages are just as they sound, very very beginners. Most mages start magic school at Apprentice at the lowest or Intermediate
Most Mages are Graduate level of with a similar (though less) amount of Masters
Grand Masters are rare but not unheard of. typically a Mage is a Grand Master in one type of magic (flame, water, charm, ice, etc) and a Master or Graduate in others
Hero level are dime a dozen, basically unheard of (like every thousands years) They are Grand Masters in basically all elements of magic
This is too long so imma cut it off. I'll do magic lore 2 some other time

Brynn and August designs. Haven't done any proper design drawings for them and just recently redesigned August so that's kinda as good as I've got atm. Want to make some proper sheets or at least cleaner refs for them for artfight coming up, but we'll see. For now, sketchbook doodles

Welcome in
Guess this is the start if the blog. Just making this as a place to put all my Brynn and August stuff. I'll probably just go through and post some stuff related to them that I already have, like doodles and bios (sorta). This is all going to be very stream of consciousness so be prepared for that too
General Info
Title is so not final. I've been working on this for like... what a year or maybe two? I've got no clue what to call it, usually I just title things when they're done so till then, Brynn and August's Silly Little Adventure. Ideas are totally welcome
Brynn is an elven adventurer and August is a human Mage, a magic theory professor at a prestigious magic school. When an ancient curse begins to spread across the nation, they independently begin trying to help in their own ways, eventually meeting each other when August falls out of the sky... I'll elaborate sometime.
Magic is cast with mana through drawing magic circles. If you master a spell, as long as you have a focus you can cast without drawing. There is no spoken spell language, but the written language used in drawing circles is referred to as Ancient Magi, the language of the original casters. They're long dead.
The Curse turns everything it covers into glass, originating from an ancient elven city (Ivost is what I've been calling it but I'm not a big fan of the name). It was cast over a 100 years before our story takes place, and stopped at the edges of the city limits. Originally their were adventurers sent in to try and reverse it but over time, the attempts waned and stopped entirely. But after 100 years it suddenly began to expand again and the King sent out an emergency request for adventurers to try and break the curse for any reward they desired. (Neither Brynn or August care about the reward, they're very much invested for their own reasons)
Okay I'mma call that my master post for now, I'll do detail posts individually. For now, thanks for coming, hope you stick around?
