The Wheel of Fortune
In a town of “all or nothing” like Pittsburgh, there is little time to appreciate nuance in most matters. The court of public opinion is mixed with passion from all possible perspectives. It feels at times that picking sides is the objective rather than navigating difficult discussions in order to discover beneficial solutions. This is no better reflected than in the extremely sensitive topic of housing costs. And of course it’s a sensitive topic. Shelter is one of our basic needs and maintaining a safe place to live is not afforded to all Pittsburghers equally.
This city is not alone in this struggle—so while this deck is not about other cities there is much that people from across the United States can likely relate to. . The Wheel of Fortune is traditionally about hitting it big with Lady Luck—whether that be monetarily or karmically. The card maintains however that all positives must have a negative. Such is the case with finding, maintaining, and/or sustaining a place in “The Most Liveable City.” The stress imposed by housing costs has left little to cover basic needs for a large population. Conflict between these groups and those making profits, such as the landlords and sellers, has created problems that have a devastating and rippling effect in communities.
For some, it is much less expensive to rent or buy a home in Pittsburgh in comparison to other cities. But, when wages are stagnant, people are forced to save less. Affordability now becomes nuanced. Renters in Pittsburgh that are not prepared for rising rental costs suffer. Homeowners not prepared for higher taxes suffer. Opportunities to live and remain in these neighborhoods shrink.
All of this is to say that a rising tide does not lift all boats. Our Wheel of Fortune is the house that can be someones needed nest egg. Simultaneously, create barriers for many to live or remain in that neighborhood. Getting what you want and at a cost.
The woman standing there is left ambiguous as to where she lands in this equation. Is the money flowing in or out?
Bridge Witches’ goal is to get you thinking about people and place. Whether using tarot to put your own concerns into perspective or seeing things represent Pittsburgh in a way you hadn’t though of previously—we want to push people to take a moment to observe, listen, and learn instead of building barriers between each other because we are different. Our city is more than pierogis and football and our neighborhoods are borderless when it comes to the bigger issues our region faces. Here’s to hoping that we all land on Lady Luck’s good side.
Positive aspects of this card: Good luck, positive energy, positive change, a good turn of events, good coincidence Negative aspects: Lack of control, bad luck, sense of doom, negative coincidence Key features: Pittsburgh row houses that have skyrocketed in value (+500% in less than 10 years), fire that cleanses but harms, “luck” in the wind, a women either losing it all or getting as much as she’s able.”

FAQ for Bridge Witches Tarot
Tumblr media
Who is Ki11erpancake?
Ki11erpancake is me! My name is Genevieve Barbee-Turner, artist, illustrator, and curator of the now archived AP Collection (2012-2015). Since 2016 I have shifted to illustrating the communities I have worked and lived in, highlighting the grace of everyday life. After three years of collecting voices as The AP Collection, I had a large selection of stories that have broadened and challenged my feelings about living in Pittsburgh. This has culminated in the creation of Bridge Witches: A Tarot Deck.
>> What is Bridge Witches?
A retelling of the Rider-Waite, this deck of 80 cards illustrates the people and places in the City of Pittsburgh. The suits, (fences, cicadas, trees, and cups) reflect the north, south, east, and west ends of the city, it’s season’s, it’s history, and lesser talked about communities that make Pittsburgh what it is.
While past interviews were used as a spring board, much of Bridge Witches was researched by traversing the neighborhoods, talking to people, and sifting though documents at multiple libraries including The Heinz History Center. The deck is currently available for pre-order, to be delivered in early-October. I’m also looking to sell in local shops around the Pittsburgh area and South Western PA.
>> How do I buy this deck?!
This website is a live document and will be updating regularly as we reach the holiday season. Please be on the look out for other items coming featuring Bridge Witches including 3D prints, vinyl stickers, and digital “sticker” packs for iOS devices.
Questions? Email: [email protected].
>> What’s this website about?
This website features as the companion reference document for the Bridge Witches deck and details stories about each card as well as a guide for their individual meaning. Each story of a single card features: why the subject matter was chosen, how the deck might differ from the traditional Rider-Waite deck, and what key symbols lie within it. In each post you can also purchase an individual print of the card should you want one to frame at home or gift to the Queen of Cups in your life (we all have one).
>> How was the deck made?
This deck was drawn by hand on an iPad Pro + Pencil directly into Photoshop on a MacBook Air using the Astropad App. I still use a good old fashioned sketchbook to draw things out and scan in an underdrawing and go from there!
>> What inspired this?
A “traditional” Rider-Waite deck contains 78 cards. Twenty-two are the Major Arcana—the gods of large ideas that impact our lives in significant ways. The other fifty-six are the Minor Arcana which celebrate the mundane / everyday things that come up in our lives. This is an excellent medium for telling stories about the Steel City.
Growing up in the 1990s I enjoyed learning from other girls my age about the “right way” to handle the cards and adored gazing at the intricate art of each one. This interest has stuck with me and as a grown up artist my 2D work is heavily influenced by the allegory and symbolic storytelling of tarot as well as religious art, Japanese printmaking, and the Fauvists.
>> Diversity in Tarot
Like many artists, I’ve found that the traditional tarot deck doesn’t really reflect my lived experience nor that of others around me. In the same vein, I find that the narrative of Pittsburgh is one that historically overlooks the contributions of people of color, the LGBTqi community, and those living with physical and behavioral differences.
Each card of Bridge Witches features a character based on people living in Pittsburgh today. While I want everyone to pick up this deck and see a part of themselves reflected in it I can’t help but caution that I tried my best but am sure I’ve missed something. I’ve used research at the Heinz History Center, conversations I have collected over several years, consultations with writer and tarot reader Erin Nihizer, and Corrine Kenner’s Tarot and Astrology to put together this balance of old and new tarot. The established institutions currently in place for preserving history in Pittsburgh are inherently biased. While I’ve connected with people in minority communities who are preserving their own history, I must acknowledge that I’m a white woman with my own inherent biases invited as a guest to those space. As I work daily to undo the racism and systemic oppressive attitudes that I’ve been raised with it’s never enough. This is me taking a crack at capturing stories from today’s Pittsburgh and paying homage to the people who got us here—not me stating any kind of authority.

Four of Trees
Our city is taken over by green things every spring and summer. It gives Pittsburgh an other worldly look of a land reclaimed by plants.
The fascination with abandoned buildings dovetails with our eternal romance with death. We want to witness what scares us. Nostalgia is the same impulse to swell with ache over time we can never get back.
Pittsburgh is filled with places that for varying reasons are slowly being reclaimed by the land. While looking at stylish pictures of them on the internet is a hobby for many, there’s the question of what the impact these abandoned spaces have on a region. Many would rather gaze into our wounds and wish for the good old days for all the good it will do.
We don’t get the past back but it lives on around us, whether it’s in outdated bureaucracy or passed on as treasured legacy. This is the Four of Trees in a nut shell.
Positive aspects of this card: Spiritual harmony Negative aspects: Harboring unseen/unacknowledged strife Key features: Beautiful buildings in the East End are consumed with vines and other growth every spring and give Pittsburgh a mystical feel that’s attractive to many. Blight however is a condition brought on by a combination of disturbances including, but not limited to, socio-economic inequality, redlining, and population fluctuation.

Four of Fences
There can’t be a deck about Pittsburgh without referring to the parking chair. Whether you use them or not they are a part of the culture in a snowy region. The veracity of these chairs is not relevant to this card but is a great prop.
The winter settles (entombs?) everything including us no matter who busy we wish to keep ourselves. It takes longer to dress and moving through the world requires alternate strategies. We have to accept this. There is no getting around snow. In that cold and the quiet it can bring we have time to think and take in a different looking Pittsburgh. A forced hibernation can be a time to rethink things.
Positive aspects of this card: Reprieve, acceptance of fate Negative aspects: Cabin fever, exhaustion with all that needs done Key features: The winter parking chair is a sign that someone has done the work to dig out that spot. That’s not to say it won’t be covered up by a squick snow or a plow making its way down the street. There is a lot of peace in a quiet and snow covered Pittsburgh. After while though... people start to freak out a little bit (about early February to be exact)

Four of Cups
Sometimes it feels like a combination of weather and current events and other inner/outer forces makes life in Pittsburgh harder than it should be. Some struggle with this every day no matter the circumstances outside. Looking at your glass it is half full while others seem to have figured out how to keep theirs’ brimming. This is a common but devastating matter of life for so many.
The number 4 is usually one of stability but liquid makes things tricky on occasion.
Cups are about relationships and community. Our cups overflow with love for our friends, family, and neighbors and it’s that community that helps to keep us afloat when we struggle. There are circumstances however when it is not enough and we lose people we care about.
This doesn’t mean they are truly gone however. The space they have left will never be filled but the energy they possessed is dispersed into everyone they touched and lives on in the work we do and the choices we make.
The phoenix bursts into flame but is reborn from the ashes. Great amounts of emotion can in times of need offer us needed strength to continue.
Positive aspects of this card: Expansion, help filling the void, relationships (personal or professional) that sustain us, considering options, place making Negative aspects: Material things don’t bring happiness, “thinking” a way through without support (community or professional), placelessness Key features: Someone can be the image of perfection but we don’t know people’s stories unless we are listening. The phoenix on the cup has been mention but the other patterns and background are an ode to minimalism and abstract expressionism, and color field art.

Three of Trees
It’s more talk of balance with the Three of Threes. Instead let’s talk a little bit about spiritual balance. While a tree has a general growth plan, it’s going to have to overcome different challenges. It’s roots need places to spread, it’s leaves need light, and it hopefully doesn’t suffer a great trauma that it can’t overcome. Our souls aren’t that different.
We have / will experience varying levels of suffering. Our connection to a spiritual practice (of any kind) can be the helping hand that guides us.
Positive aspects of this card: Spiritual focus and balance, fortitude, adaptation, spiritual growth Negative aspects: When spiritual things are off that lack of focus has an impact on everything around us; action that promote better thinking than the reverse Key features: A young woman with a bloody lip looks up for some guidance before making the next move.

Three of Cicadas
While Cicadas as a suit is focused on work and material wealth, threes are about balance. We can’t do our best work if things on the home front are shaky and vice versa. We are at our best when our home is filled with what fulfills us, (examples: a family of fur babies, a partner, and/or a room filled with green and growing things, a vast record collection etc). When things are settled then we are living our best life and focusing on the task at hand.
This could be taken literally to mean that we must put balanced days together to maintain order or to achieve greater goals. It’s not uncommon to get disillusioned with the daily grind but the larger perspective is greater peace. Don’t have a goal? Reevaluate. What needs to change in order to feel like you’re working towards something?
Positive aspects of this card: Life / work balance Negative aspects: The dull grind. Key features: The spatula and cellphone are symbolic of different tools for creativity and communication (both essential in any kind of business). The white color worker takes the T to and from work each day, symbolizing cycles and balance that keep the home running. The home is surrounded with symbols of love (roses) and wealth) basil and chamomile.

Three of Fences
The Three of Fences is a violent looking card. When we leave our heart on our sleeves we wind up getting hurt. Our girl here is about to poke her eye out with her own feelings. That doesn’t mean she can’t protect herself. Is lashing out really the best way though? Finding a balance is tough especially when dealing with inner turmoil. Sometimes it’s worth a pause to think about it before throwing daggers.
Positive aspects of this card: Purpose, meaning, balance Negative aspects: Lack of foresight, Imbalance, excessiveness, a skewered heart Key features: Natural beauty and manmade concepts commingling peacefully

Three of Cups
Teamwork makes the dream work. This is the basic principle for this card. Community gardening is the best example of this in our communities at the moment. When fall starts and the season begins to come to a close neighbors come out to gather and turn everything in for the year. These spaces aren’t ones that are super googlable. Just wandering around Pittsburgh you can spot wooden signs marking a once empty lot or tract of land that has been cultivated.
Cups are synonymous with water, the management of which determines the success of your plants. It’s the same with communication amongst the team. Without it things can get dicy and too much nit-picking can put a wrench into things. The three of cups celebrates an even flow of creative energy that leads to everyone prospering.
Positive aspects of this card: Accomplishment, cup flowing over, harvest, coming together of concept, skill, and community, good communication Negative aspects: Too many cooks in the kitchen Key features: Community gardening, sharing of harvest with community, inclusivity when you grow and share

The Devil
When considering the design of this card many things came up. It came up that putting a particular person in this role just creates more tension than sharing perspective with is out of line with our values.
Instead, it’s ideas that are on display here. The devil card is more about being stuck with a problem you can’t shake then a sign of demonic possession. The things our society can’t shake aren’t too different from those before us. Selfishness, rudeness, and thoughtlessness (among other things of course) are things we’ve struggle with since forever.
If you have ever used PAT in Allegheny County you know how irritating and pervasive man-spreading and loud phone conversations can be. (Especially on any bus that goes through Oakland and into Downtown because they are PACKED.)
This display of shitty behavior is brought to you by a cat—an ode to the concerned citizens who send mass text alerts via Nextdoor (if you don’t know what Nextdoor is consider yourself lucky and we aren’t linking it here) letting everyone know in an entire zip code that a cat is missing (or has been found or has been spotted or might be in trouble and is that firecracker or a gunshot?!). In the years of having this functionality no one has ever used it to convey an actual emergency.
Sometimes rudeness comes packaged in “concern for others”. In an attempt to control something on the outside to try and combat an inner lack of control. This the the heart of the devil card. When plagued with unaddressed inner turmoil it expresses itself as lack of care for those around us.
Positive aspects of this card: What’s on your mind? What’s really bothering you? Find out, address it, and maybe other things will fall into place.
Negative aspects: You’re kinda stuck. Instead of interior forces it might be things outside of your control. Accepting that you can’t handle it all on your own and asking for help could be a game changer.
Key features: Asshole behavior begets asshole behavior, (even if it’s passive aggressive assholishness).

Judgement
So this card diverges heavily from the traditional Judgement card. The whole “naked men and women being judged before an archangel” just felt a little... one sided in its use of a specific religion to talk about this topic.
Instead, we decided to get a little cheeky. Our Judgement card features the zombified head of a teenager who even in underneath must roll their eyes at you as if you are the biggest idiot in the room. You will never “get it”.
Their head sits upon the Squirrel Hill Tunnels which are known to feel so constrictive by many drivers that they slow down upon entering and traffic backs up at all times of the day. As your car is swallowed into their darkness, you begin to question every driver on all sides and “can’t see the hold up”.
To say driving in Pittsburgh is a pain in the ass is an understatement. No one wins here and everybody knows better than everybody else.
After getting through the tunnels however, (as long as you haven’t caused any major damage) you feel amazing that you are free.
The harshest critics are usually the harshest on themselves. They lack perspective to their own problems and can’t seem to accept things as they are and adapt. Acceptance of our frustrations is learned (or it’s not...). There is a freedom that comes from this acceptance however. If we can let go of our inner zombie teenager and take the time to stop rolling the jaded eyes of our soul then judgement becomes self reflection and growth.
Positive aspects of this card: When you start to believe that acceptance is the answer to every problem and inner disturbance then you’re on the other side of judgement.
Negative aspects: Lack of self examination or perspective, jaded, blaming others, you probably suffer from terrible road rage.
Key features: To be fair, the Squirrel Hill Tunnels are the fucking worst and we here at BW avoid them at all costs so who are we to tell you what to do? Zombie teenager head came to us in a vision of our inner critic being a girl we went to high school with who was intolerably rude to other teens and adults alike.

The Hermit
The introverted of introverted—the hermit card celebrates isolation and treasures thinking time. In a world that demands we put ourselves out there at every turn and share our thoughts with the world, the hermit turns inward and keeps their thoughts to themselves before putting things out into the world.
This is not the same as isolating. It is possible to be actively extroverted and still emotionally isolate oneself from friends, family, and community. The Hermit card is about thoughtful reflection, thinking things through, and self-care. This image is based on a person locally who vibes strongly with this card but obviously treasures their privacy. This “selfie” reflects their fascination with the world and the warmth they chose to share with others in their own way.
Positive aspects of this card: Self-refelection, self care, privacy, thoughtfulness
Negative aspects: Neglect of oneself and your needs, denial of feelings, isolation from one’s community
Key features: The focus of this card is on nature. A cherry is front and center, it’s color and simple shape a fascination for the hermit. It allows the introvert to express themselves without putting their face out there.

Two of Trees
This suit reflects our own spiritual and creative power and what influence it has on the people around us. Bridge Witches as a deck made the decision that when highlighting an African-American person in a card to also emphasize the history of black entrepreneurship in Pittsburgh.
In post-emancipation and pre-Great Migration Pittsburgh there was a small but established black middle class. While it was near impossible to work in many professional roles people found success opening small businesses, (Mrs. Virginia Proctor’s Hair Shop is a famous example). More on this subject will be discussed in the forthcoming Fortitude card.
Today, there is a strong legacy of black owned businesses in Pittsburgh, ranging from restaurants, barbershops and salon, apparel brands and so much more. The two of trees celebrates forging ahead, making creative choices, and leadership—all essential to good business.
Positive aspects of this card: Pioneering spirit, level headed thinking, screwed risk taking, the creative spirit.
Negative aspects: Poor choices, the inability to take the next right step, doubt, lack of decision making.
Key features: Carnegie Mellon University (as a stand in for college in general but like, a super fancy one we suppose), the Pixburgh hat is a direct reference to farESH Brand and the dope af clothing + apparel they make.
/*<![CDATA[*/ (function () { var scriptURL = 'https://sdks.shopifycdn.com/buy-button/latest/buy-button-storefront.min.js'; if (window.ShopifyBuy) { if (window.ShopifyBuy.UI) { ShopifyBuyInit(); } else { loadScript(); } } else { loadScript(); } function loadScript() { var script = document.createElement('script'); script.async = true; script.src = scriptURL; (document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0] || document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0]).appendChild(script); script.onload = ShopifyBuyInit; } function ShopifyBuyInit() { var client = ShopifyBuy.buildClient({ domain: 'bridge-witches.myshopify.com', apiKey: 'abdc8a544b280019114a79fcb0b91072', appId: '6', }); ShopifyBuy.UI.onReady(client).then(function (ui) { ui.createComponent('product', { id: [11910794052], node: document.getElementById('product-component-1504709494937'), moneyFormat: '${{amount}}', options: {"product":{"layout":"horizontal","variantId":"all","width":"100%","contents":{"img":false,"imgWithCarousel":true,"variantTitle":false,"description":true,"buttonWithQuantity":false,"quantity":false},"styles":{"product":{"text-align":"left","@media (min-width: 601px)":{"max-width":"100%","margin-left":"0","margin-bottom":"50px"}},"title":{"font-size":"26px"},"price":{"font-size":"18px"},"compareAt":{"font-size":"15px"}}},"cart":{"contents":{"button":true},"text":{"empty":"Your cart is empty :("},"styles":{"footer":{"background-color":"#ffffff"}}},"modalProduct":{"contents":{"img":false,"imgWithCarousel":true,"variantTitle":false,"buttonWithQuantity":true,"button":false,"quantity":false},"styles":{"product":{"@media (min-width: 601px)":{"max-width":"100%","margin-left":"0px","margin-bottom":"0px"}}}},"productSet":{"styles":{"products":{"@media (min-width: 601px)":{"margin-left":"-20px"}}}}}, }); }); } })(); /*]]>*/

Two of Cicadas
This suit concerns itself with the home and material things. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of wealth, we wanted to discuss the definition of bounty. This garden overflows and the two is about balance. For this card specifically it’s the balance of nature. Keeping a garden is a skill that is equal parts practical knowledge and natural intuition. There are people who can just will things out of the ground in a way that seems like magic.
This is a card for the gardeners out there. Especially the gardeners who feed themselves and others!
Positive aspects of this card: Adapting to change, taping into rhythm
Negative aspects: Discombobulation, mismanagement
Key features: The gardens of houses in the South Hills that are both neat and wild at the same time. Tomatoes which feature in dishes from across the world symbolizes the familiar and a tie that binds. The state of your tomatoes is the topic of countless small talk in Pittsburgh summers. Basil is its natural companion both in the soil and on the plate. It is also abundant. Camomile flower symbolizes wealth.
/*<![CDATA[*/ (function () { var scriptURL = 'https://sdks.shopifycdn.com/buy-button/latest/buy-button-storefront.min.js'; if (window.ShopifyBuy) { if (window.ShopifyBuy.UI) { ShopifyBuyInit(); } else { loadScript(); } } else { loadScript(); } function loadScript() { var script = document.createElement('script'); script.async = true; script.src = scriptURL; (document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0] || document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0]).appendChild(script); script.onload = ShopifyBuyInit; } function ShopifyBuyInit() { var client = ShopifyBuy.buildClient({ domain: 'bridge-witches.myshopify.com', apiKey: 'abdc8a544b280019114a79fcb0b91072', appId: '6', }); ShopifyBuy.UI.onReady(client).then(function (ui) { ui.createComponent('product', { id: [11910749956], node: document.getElementById('product-component-1504654923997'), moneyFormat: '${{amount}}', options: {"product":{"layout":"horizontal","variantId":"all","width":"100%","contents":{"img":false,"imgWithCarousel":true,"variantTitle":false,"description":true,"buttonWithQuantity":false,"quantity":false},"styles":{"product":{"text-align":"left","@media (min-width: 601px)":{"max-width":"100%","margin-left":"0","margin-bottom":"50px"}},"title":{"font-size":"26px"},"price":{"font-size":"18px"},"compareAt":{"font-size":"15px"}}},"cart":{"contents":{"button":true},"text":{"empty":"Your cart is empty :("},"styles":{"footer":{"background-color":"#ffffff"}}},"modalProduct":{"contents":{"img":false,"imgWithCarousel":true,"variantTitle":false,"buttonWithQuantity":true,"button":false,"quantity":false},"styles":{"product":{"@media (min-width: 601px)":{"max-width":"100%","margin-left":"0px","margin-bottom":"0px"}}}},"productSet":{"styles":{"products":{"@media (min-width: 601px)":{"margin-left":"-20px"}}}}}, }); }); } })(); /*]]>*/

Two of Fences
Looking across a backyard along lines of fences in Pittsburgh can be beautiful. It’s nice to see things in a row and the layers are visually intriguing in this crooked little town. There is even something comforting about having your own little space corralled.
Well, this card isn’t about comfort. It’s about how when we stop paying attention to people around us everyone becomes an other. When this happens we face indecision over performing the most simple of kindnesses.
Positive aspects of this card: The breakdown of denial. You are on one side or the other.
Negative aspects: Separation, segmentation, and mental/emotional isolation
Key features: Every neighborhood has it’s own little alleyways with paths that face fences. If you wander around too much though you might have the cops called on you.

Two of Cups
The Suit of Cups is unabashedly our favorite. Taking the good with the bad, there is so much to love about water signs and fall themes. This suit focuses on relationships, family (chosen or blood), and community. The two of cups is about two becoming in sync for a higher purpose. In our card, it’s for a selfie that utilizes face recognition filters to turn each person into a puppy.
If you were to search popular social media sites for posts that tag a particular location, you will discover how people feel about a place. The West End is all about family and friends hanging out together. These two ladies are in their prime and commemorating their time together.
Positive aspects of this card: Being in sync with another person, keeping an emotional bond, goofing off, tenderness, togetherness
Negative aspects: F I G H T S
Key features: The bonds of friendship solidified via selfie. The two coffee mugs feature stupid designs that you would definitely buy as a joke but not a joke for your friend. Sometimes stupid is awesome and your friend always gets that.
