Old warriors did not get old by accident; they got old by being wise, having the right knowledge, and being tough. Never underestimate an old man who has grown up in a rough profession or a rough environment. -Bodhi Sanders

"Some roads, you start going down, well, you can't turn back, and I'm about a hundred miles down one of those right now" and "every one of Moreau's men has innocent blood on their hands. every one of them, is worse than me. you think you know what I've done? the worst thing I ever did, in my entire life, I did for Damien Moreau. And I'll never be clean of that." and "what do you wanna know? names, dates, locations? wanna know what food was on their breath? their eyes - what colour their eyes were? you wanna know the last words they spoke? do you wanna know which ones deserved it? or better yet the ones that didn't? wanna know which ones begged? do you know why i remember these things? you don't know? 'cause i can't forget. so there's nothing you can do, no punishment you can hand out, that's worse than what i live with every day. so to answer your question, no. i haven't counted. i don't need to." and "Arthur found your weak spot. and you know what? it's a good weak spot. you and Parker, Hardison and Nate, you guys went all in on becoming better people, and you brought me along for the ride. you're a bunch of walking second chances, and that is why you believed Arthur deserved another shot, because you are redeemed." "so are you." "no. no, i will never be redeemed, and i made peace with that a long time ago. and that's what makes it very hard for people like Wilde to get one over on me. i know i may never be deserving of a second chance. i appreciate the opportunity to be useful." do you see. do you get it.

ATLAS
Name: UTP Birthdate: (age 25+) Time in Mercy: whole life Occupation: Council person in training, UTP Gender: UTP
BIOGRAPHY
You grew up knowing you could do anything. Others grew up in families where the expectations proved suffocating, but not you. Not at first. You thrived under the attention they gave you and the freedom to do whatever you liked. Doors opened for you without effort, and people treated you with a deference reserved for royalty. Sure, you had to smile politely every time your council parent attended a ceremony, and you prepared yourself for the role you’d soon takeover for them, but its not a hardship for all you gain. You don’t feel the weight of it until the first time someone tries to kill you. The attack left its mark, and the golden world you once relished now seems darker. The weave is a bane on your life. Everywhere you go, people whisper about the weave. You find it superstitious nonsense for the longest time, denying its existence. You’re vocal in your disbelief and you’re one of the few people who feels few of the catastrophes the weave has wrought. But your luck doesn’t last forever. You’re home alone when the weave strikes that last time in winter; you can think of no explanation for the howling screams echoing through your house until the magic wanes. Maybe someday, you’ll have the courage to investigate it.
CONNECTIONS
Dusk: You're grateful they saved your life, but at the same time, you understood your last bodyguard a lot more. Now, you're learning a new person and you aren't certain how much you like them. You see there's a hunger in them to prove themselves, and you worry how someone will twist it against you. Radiance: The two of you were once thick as thieves, challenging authority hand-in-hand. When they begin to spiral, however, you know your friendship can't continue. Reputation matters far too much in Mercy. You pulled away from them some years ago, and now you can only watch on the peripheral as their life falls apart.
Atlas is open. FC UTP.

foreshadowing done well makes me go feral like there’s NOTHING better than getting to the end a book or an important storyline moment and realising that the author laced information so intricately into their writing that weren’t noticeable upon first read but when you read back sections they’re light giant red flags like wow writing is amazing

been reading a lot of haunted/sentient house books in the past couple years, and i've encountered 3 main types of narrative: 1) the house loves you and that's a good thing 2) the house loves you and that's a bad thing and 3) the house hates you and that's a bad thing. this leaves a gap for a potential fourth type of story-- the house hates you and that's a good thing. excited to see if hauntologists delve into this quadrant and what it looks like if they do

“A person always exceeds and resists the limits of a story about them, and no matter how widely we set the boundaries, their subjectivity spills over, drips at the edges, then rushes out completely. People are, it seems, too complicated to sit still inside a narrative, but that hasn’t stopped anyone from trying, desperately trying, to compact a life into pages.”
— Catherine Lacey, Biography of X
