idk thinking about how sometimes you have to show up for people you aren't that close to, because sometimes you're just the person who's there. sometimes you invite a new friend to a party and end up having to sit with them through a panic attack. sometimes you run into an acquaintance on their worst day and they need to talk about what happened. sometimes someone is crying in a stairwell and you're the only one around to ask if they're okay. and none of this is "trauma dumping" or whatever the fuck it's just being there for people because you're the one in the room with them.

I say this aloud everyday just to remind myself.
the two fundamental truths of historical and contemporary mankind:
we were just as smart then as we are now
we are just as stupid now as we were then

One of the things I love so much about this show is the way it communicates how others' views of us can affect our perception of ourselves. I mean, I know ideally we're not supposed to let that happen, but it's unrealistic, it happens all day everyday. And the show really achieves this with Stede.
In the first four eps, Stede ranges from quirky to incompetent and the whole crew very clearly views him this way. Then Blackbeard shows up and shifts the perspective to Stede being brave and unique and interesting, and the crew starts to see this too.
When Zheng and Stede fight, Ed is nowhere around. We the audience are given Zheng's point of view - that he is an incompetent idiot, and Stede really feels like it's true in that moment, and so it kind of is true.
We get this with CJ, too. For a minute CJ makes Stede look like a lame-o, and it's not until Stede realizes CJ legitimately sucks and stands up for his crew that the crew's pov shifts back to Stede being cool again.
I dunno about y'all, but I had a shit time of it when I was younger, and I avoid going back to my hometown at all costs because as I cross the city lines, I can feel the person the people who live there all saw me as growing up locking me in handcuffs - and it feels BAD. Do any of you have that family member who treats us like whoever they thought we were at 8 and will never ever budge on that opinion regardless of your current age, grace or accomplishments?
This is Zheng in ofmd, this is Iggy. The canyon seems divided into those who also are like this about Stede, never budging, and those who think Ig actually ever got to a place where he was really able to see Stede past his first impressions (it was very late, if it ever truly happened).
What is magic about Ed, and magic about this show, and magic about its messages of found family is: you can surround yourself with the people who see you not as a bumbling idiot, only focused on your worst flaws, but as someone shiny and cool and fun. That see your best, and treat you like those are the parts that matter. I feel like the shift in Stede's abilities has a lot to do with Ed, but not just him being supported by Ed's presence - re: op's post above, the pov for us the audience shifts from Zheng's to Ed's on that beach, and Ed loves Stede and is just going to see everything he does in a better, kinder, more loving light than Zheng ever would. Of course Stede becomes more heroic.
It's such a brilliant way to communicate how much the people in our life matter to our perception of ourselves, and how important it is to not let the haters dictate those perceptions. I fell in love with Stede right alongside Ed, and I can't even imagine not seeing everything he does as charming. I have friends I'm obsessed with and everything they do is the fucking best - hearing they have family members or randos saying awful things about them is just baffling to me - are we even talking about the same person? And I wanna go into fight mode when those wonderful people get sad and believe the awful opinions, always, always coming from people who don't understand them well and know them a hell of a lot less well than I do.
This is super rambly and inarticulate, but I hope I communicated what I was trying to say. We the audience get views of Stede slanted through the eyes of the characters viewing him at the time, and Ed's pov has a huge impact on ours and almost everyone else in the show.
We see Stede bumbling more than we've seen him in a while when he's fighting with Zheng, and with good reason, he's completely unequal to her, but I think it's more than that. We've seen Stede get out of sticky situations with some wily moves in just the right moment. There's a parallel with his duel with Izzy from S1 - in that fight, he was able to catch Izzy off guard and throw gunpowder in his eyes, but with Zheng, Stede's attempt at throwing dirt at her (?) is an abysmal failure. Nothing he tries works like it has in the past.
Earlier in the season Izzy says that he doesn't understand how Stede is still alive. Stede says he thinks he just works well under pressure. And we do see that's true in his "I did a punch" moment and with the immolation.
But when he's fighting Zheng, he is no longer so lucky. Later, he also tries to fight the English soldiers and needs to be saved by Zheng. At first I thought this was because he's so outmatched up against a pirate queen. He is, as Zheng pointed out, a mediocre man who thinks he's exceptional.
But I think something shifts when they get to the beach. Suddenly he's able to beat some of the British soldiers and hold his own against them. He's still no where near as good as Zheng, and he does need her to help him remove his sword from a soldier's body, but he got it in there in the first place and that's a big difference from how he was performing a few minutes earlier.
And I think what has changed in that moment is that Ed is nearby. Ed is returning to him. They're both on that beach and even before they're physically together, they know they are reunited. And suddenly, Stede is a better version of himself. He's a better pirate.
It might be that Ed's return has removed a weight of sadness and fear from Stede's mind. But I think it's also that he feels supported, and just having that support from someone you love (be it Ed, or the crew) makes everything easier. Makes it easier to be the best version of yourself.
Ultimately, this show is about love and about community and how much both matter.

‘If you see this video, we are being intercepted and kidnapped’
Greta Thunberg has shared a pre-recorded video appealing for international help.
“My name is Greta Thunberg, and I am from Sweden,” Thunberg said in the video recorded on board the Madleen, before tonight’s events.
“If you see this video, we are being intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel,” she said.
“I urge all my friends, family and comrades to put pressure on the Swedish government to release me and the others as soon as possible.”

Omens of True Spring Watercolor. 7x9"
Available today on @everydayoriginal
-
portfolio | shop | patreon
Winters are always pretty hard but it seems like pretty much across the board, this winter lasted forever. It was difficult, it was bitter, it was dark. We kept getting tricked with false springs. But it did finally end. I never quite trust that the last snow has fallen until I smell my first lilacs of the year. And, on a recent walk, I found a tiny baby garter snake, a little extra omen that winter had finally left.

Listen I'm not American but a lot of people I love dearly live there and are not ultra rich, I have to imagine most of y'all are not ultra rich, please please take whatever meds you need to overcome anxiety and call your reps, THIS MATTERS SO MUCH
Ok, so. The Trump budget. It has already passed the House and now just needs 51 senators to pass it and send it to Trump for signature.
There are 53 Republican senators, 45 Democratic ones, and 2 Independents that vote with the Democrats. VP Vance is a tiebreaker vote.
So to block the bill, at least four Republican senators need to find their spines and the Democrats and Independents all need to keep their spines. This will not happen without direct action from voters.
They are only going to resist this bill if they hear from voters in their states. They do not care if some person from California calls them.
It's really fucking bad for everyone except the ultra-wealthy, surprise surprise.
I'm going to go through some of the features of this budget in reblogs, but trust and believe that it's horrible for the vast, vast majority of Americans, including you.
Highlights include:
Extends the Trump tax cuts passed in 2017. This continues $3.7 billion in tax cuts for the wealthy. If this budget does not pass, these tax cuts will expire and go back up without any action.
$150 billion in additional military spending
Work requirements for Medicaid. "childless adults without disabilities would be required to work 80 hours per month to qualify for benefits.". They expect millions of people to fail to meet work requirements and lose Medicaid.
Planned Parenthood and trans care. "Bans Medicaid from providing funding to Planned Parenthood as long as the organization continued to provide abortions, and would bar Medicaid from covering gender affirming health care to any beneficiaries. "
Reduces SNAP food stamp access that 40 million people use. "mandates work requirements for able-bodied SNAP enrollees who don't have dependents.".
Clean energy "dramatically scaling back many of the tax credits for clean energy."
Border walls and ICE. "$46.5 billion toward completing Trump's border wall. It also allots $5 billion for Customs and Border Protection facilities and more than $6 billion to hire and retain more agents and officers"
Student loans. "cut $330 billion from the student loan system by scrapping several existing repayment options, including the Biden-era SAVE program that based payments on income and household size.". Does anyone want to have student loan payments that you cannot afford?
Guts Obamacare. "Saves $100 billion, but will result in millions of Americans becoming uninsured if they fail to adhere to new paperwork requirements or can no longer afford insurance premiums."
Weakens federal courts that keep using orders that his actions are illegal and unconstitutional. It prohibits courts from enforcing contempt citations for violations of injunctions or temporary restraining orders unless the plaintiff pays a bond. Bonds can be EXTRAORDINARILY EXPENSIVE and are not currently required in these cases. The provision "would make most existing injunctions—in antitrust cases, police reform cases, school desegregation cases, and others—unenforceable," says the god of constitutional law, Dean Erwin Chemerinsky.
So, you folks in red states and you folks in wobbly blue states (PA, NC, etc), you need to call your senators and save us all.
Call every day. Call after hours so you can leave a voicemail and not talk to anyone.
For real y'all, millions of people are going to starve, go broke, and be without medical care if this bill passes. Which is a feature, not a bug, of the Trump administration.
And it will balloon the national debt to pay for these tax cuts for the wealthy.
