The minerals that are found in granite are primarily quartz, plagioclase feldspars, potassium or K-feldspars, hornblende and micas. Quartz is usually the last mineral to crystallize and fills in the extra space between the other minerals. Quartz’s hardness, lack of chemical reactivity and near lack of cleavage give granite a significant amount of its desirable durable properties. The quartz will appear gray, but is actually colorless and is reflecting and fusing the colors of the white and black minerals surrounding it. The plagioclase feldspars are generally white with a porcelaneous luster. The K-feldspars are generally the ones that give granite its color variations from yellow to orange to pink or blue. Dark K-feldspars can give granite its black varieties as well. The micas are generally muscovite (silver), biotite (black or brown) orlepidolite (violet or pink) and provide the sparkle that some granites possess. The hornblende and biotite provide granite with the black pepper portion of the famous and distinctive “salt and pepper” look to classic granite.

As an igneous rock, granite forms from melted or molten rock called magma. As an intrusive rock, granite forms from molten rock that never reaches the surface of the Earth. Granite forms from the melting of lighter materials than is found in the deep crust or mantle. Where did this magma come from? There are scientists that disagree on this subject. In general there is agreement that most granite is derived from the melting of subducted crustal rock (lighter weighted rock) that slipped into the mantle in subduction zones such as those that are found ringing the Pacific Ocean today. If true then granite is a "newer" rock type as it required the plate tectonic process to have proceeded along before the first granites formed. It could have formed from some other process that segregates the lighter aluminum/silica material from more dense magnesium/iron material. It could also have been produced from a process called granitization or the melting of a chemically similar rock from intense metamorphism into a completely melted magma. However most granite crystallization models require water to be in the magma and the intense metamorphism scenario would not allow a lot of water to be present. The great variation and abundance of granite suggest that there could be many various formation models.

It is easy to classify granite into two clearly differentiated groups: basic and exotic.
Basic granite relates to all those types of granite that present a very homogeneous pattern with little movement. Typically similarly sized dots or spots evenly spread over a consistent color background. The price of these granites is at the low end of the spectrum due to their abundance and lack of exclusivity. Because of their consistency and low price, they are preferred for large projects (they were extremely popular when track homes where being built).
Some of the best selling basic granites include: Santa Cecilia, Verde Ubatuba, Tropic Brown, and New Venetian Gold.
Exotic granites are the maximum expression of nature’s work in the natural stone world. Exotic granites are as unpredictable as a modern painting. Mixing several different colors, with lots of movement and veins combining several backgrounds. Choosing an exotic granite ensures your countertop will be unique. Exotic granite is more expensive than basic granite because it is much more exclusive and, in many cases, supply is very limited. However, since the price of granite is typically only about 25% to 30% of the total price you will pay for your countertop (the rest are fabrication and installation fees), the difference in price between a basic and an exotic stone is much smaller than it seems.
Some examples of the best selling exotic granites include: Mascarello, Lapidus, Magma Gold, Kozmus, and Typhoon Bordeaux.
Basic granites are cheaper and more consistent. Exotic granites are more expensive, more beautiful, more exclusive and unique. The price difference between a basic and an exotic granite countertop is not that large. Why go exotic?
The simple difference in the final price of your countertop will not be what you expect. Lets assume we have a good size kitchen with an island that will need you to purchase about 100 sqft. of granite. If we choose a basic $10 per square foot granite, the price of the kitchen countertop will be about $4,000 ($1,000 for the two slabs of granite and $3,000 for the fabrication and installation). If we choose a $20 per square foot exotic granite instead, the price of the countertop will be $5,000 ($2,000 for the granite and $3,000 for the labor). So, for only 25% more, you can get a granite 100% more expensive, much more exclusive and unique.

Granite Slabs
Granite has been extensively used as a dimension stone and as flooring tiles in public and commercial buildings and monuments. Aberdeen in Scotland, which is constructed principally from local granite, is known as "The Granite City". Because of its abundance, granite was commonly used to build foundations for homes in New England. The Granite Railway, America's first railroad, was built to haul granite from the quarries in Quincy, Massachusetts, to the Neponset River in the 1820s. With increasing amounts of acid rain in parts of the world, granite has begun to supplant marble as a monument material, since it is much more durable. Polished granite is also a popular choice for kitchen countertops due to its high durability and aesthetic qualities. In building and for countertops, the term "granite" is often applied to all igneous rocks with large crystals, and not specifically to those with a granitic composition.

FUSION quartzite is said to have the highest level of variation within any type of granite. For some this is a “dream stone” to upgrade their kitchens with. Fusion changes quite dramatically from slab to slab. Some slabs are quite deep in color and have a lot of the rusts. Other slabs are actually pretty light colored and have less pattern. One isn't better than the other, it just depends on what you are looking for. This is a stone that you must physically visit in person and select your exact slabs before purchasing. Fusion is obviously a very dramatic stone and will be the focal point of any area you use it in. It looks beautiful on walls like a piece of art. Fusion quartzite is still a fairly new stone in the US market. It is still quarried in Brazil only. It is no coincidence that you can see it at Brazilian Stone Imports @ 717 N. 7th street Modesto CA - Mon-Friday 9am-4pm.
