DIY Boot Waterproofing: Easy Ways To Waterproof Shoes for Hikers & Trekkers
It can be very simple to waterproof boots for hiking or trekking trips that are all available online! Making sure that the correct products are used, the boots are well-cleaned, and that enough drying time is given are the most important elements. Waterproof some boots and get back out into nature!
When hiking or trekking, one of the most important things is wearing the correct shoes to make sure the experience goes as perfectly as possible. Whether using construction boots, hiking boots, or work boots for men and women, waterproofing shoes is critical. However, it does not have to be a challenge. Waterproofing can be done easily for hiking and trekking shoes to help create the perfect adventure.

REI, a well-known outdoor store, is one of the best advisors on anything in nature. Their website reminds hikers and trekkers that nearly every pair of boots come with a factory treatment of Durable Water Repellent, so boots will not need waterproofing until they are a bit older and the finish has worn off. They state that the steps to waterproofing boots are:
-Selecting the best treatment for the boot type
-Thoroughly cleaning the boots
-Putting the treatment on the boots
-Drying the boots well
The New York Times Strategist also lists several kinds of waterproofing sprays or oils that are the best in their category for a variety of types: leather, suede, heavy-duty snow boots, or more expensive leather and suede. There is also a type of oil for removing stains as well as a few application tools, which can be found here.
However, some methods can easily come from what is in the kitchen or work shed. Make sure that whatever is used is high quality without fillers, since these can damage boots and shorten their lifetime of wear.

After cleaning the boots, any sort of moisture-repelling product will provide a waterproofing barrier. Common ones to use in households are beeswax, mink oil, mink oil paste, or some other sort of wax. The more natural kinds of water repellent such as these are best used on leather boots, like a construction boot type. A waterproofing spray is still the best option for a suede boot. Oil or creams for curing, cleaning, and protecting leather can be found at a local hardware store or a Tractor Supply. Make sure that whichever option is taken, it is done often to take the best care of the boots.
When waterproofing the boots, drying is one of the most critical stages of the entire process. Make sure that there is a location that is completely dry and is preferably warm to let the boots air out. Using some newspaper inside the boots or turning on a fan facing the boots can help them dry more quickly. Be careful when using heat; a mair dryer can seem to help, but it could also shrink the leather if used incorrectly. If a newspaper is put inside the boots, do not cram it tightly in. Leave room for the paper to soak up the moisture and expand.
