Bookshelves update 📚✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am much more happy with how they look now! Especially the colourful shelf, it's my favourite with the Bottero one ☺️
Je préfère largement cette organisation. Je trouve que c'est bien plus joli, surtout l'étagère colorée et la Bottero ☺️

Book Rec: My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jackson
Tumblr media
Medium: Novel
Genre: Meta Horror
Tags/Content Warnings: Rotting Elk Meat, Slasher Movies, Goth Main Character, Past/Referenced Sexual Assault, Homoerotic Girl Best Friends, Graphic Violence, Underage, Death, Ghosts, Jaw-Specific Gore, Drowning, Systemic Racism, Children in Danger, Mystery/Thriller, Cathartic Violence, Dismemberment, Dead Bodies, Man vs. Nature, Class Warfare
Men, Women, and Chainsaws by Carol Clover is a famous piece of film analysis for one reason: Clover was the first person to define the now-ubiquitous idea of a Final Girl. You know the type—Sidney Prescott, Laurie Strode, Nancy Thompson. She’s traumatized, but in the end she’s the only one who can end the horror. Jade Daniels knows slashers by heart, which is how she knows two things: she’s in one, and she’s not the final girl.
I’m recommending this book because in 50 pages I knew it was going to be my favorite thing I read this year. At 186 pages in I had to put the book down and pace because as gonzo as it was up until that point, I hadn’t expected it to go there quite so hard.
This book plays with horror conventions by playing directly into them, with all of the subtlety befitting its teenage protagonist. Much like the movies so lovingly referenced on almost every page, there’s a sense of inevitability to it. From the jump, a genre-savvy reader will know how this is going to go. It’s bloody and dark and angry, but there’s a remarkable sense of earnest optimism, too. Jade believes the world is full of Jasons and Freddies, and she believes that somewhere out there, there’s a girl who will beat them at their own game.
In Jade’s own words, “To put it in conclusion, sir, final girls are the vessel we keep all our hope in."
You can find this book here.

To be fair, it only came to my attention when I found out that 'When We Cease to Understand the World' by Benjamin Labatut (translated by Adrian Nathan West) was included in last year's shortlist!
And because I ended up loving that book, I looked into other nominees and added them to my TBR list. It's a great way to find translated works that I would have otherwise never heard of!
The 2022 International Booker Prize shortlist comes out tomorrow! I am excited to see another book by Fernanda Melchor on the list this year. Her last nominated book, 'Temporada de Huracanes' ('Hurricane Season') was easily one of the best books I've read this year, so I cannot wait to read 'Paradais'!
'Love in the Big City' by Sang Young Park is also next on my reading list after I am done with 'Cursed Bunny' by Bora Chung (both books translated from Korean to English by Anton Hur). The UK covers are also stunning!
Have you guys read any of the books on the longlist? What did you think? Which book are you hoping makes it into the final six? Which book do you think will win?

Hello, friends!
My name is Mis. I'm a student doctor embroiled in a lifelong love affair with stories. Over the past couple of years, I've resurrected a (semi)steady reading habit, so I wanted to finally join the tumblr reading community to enjoy all the lovely bookishness.
I love all things fantasy, but also enjoy a healthy diet of sci-fi, historical, and thriller/suspense. Some of my favorite reads include Spinning Silver by Naomi Novak, Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and anything by JRR Tolkien or CS Lewis. I read a lot of YA and NA fiction but enjoy a touch of variety. Please share your recommendations!
So here's the plan:
book reviews and recommendations
read-alongs and discussions
bookish quotes, memes, and goodness
Join me! One can never have too many bookworm friends or see too much book content on their dash. Like, reblog, or comment so I can connect with you!
