È il colore della mia pelle. È la prima cosa che si nota, a livello fisico, ma spesso la diamo per scontata e ce ne dimentichiamo. E dato che oramai ci sono molti Italiani neri, l’ho voluta aggiungere a quella lista di dettagli. Andando più in profondità, io incarno perfettamente il prototipo dell’essere umano che i mezzi di comunicazione di massa (non la gente comune) intendono demonizzare e condannare. Sono una persona che ha quelle caratteristiche tali per cui difficilmente un notiziario mi incenserebbe. E difficilmente lo stato sarebbe al mio fianco, in caso di difficoltà. Non faccio notizia, non sono un tipo da copertina, non c’è tanto da romanzare sulla mia storia. Perché? Perché sono una persona normale. Perché non sono utile alla narrazione del potere che vuole un miscuglio sempre più consistente e massiccio di culture, tradizioni, lingue, usi, costumi, etnie, preferenze sessuali. Sono una persona che si alza tutte le mattine per andare a lavorare, paga le tasse, non ha vizi particolari, cerca di vivere una vita nel rispetto delle regole, non bestemmia, crede in Dio, ama (solo) le donne. Mi confondo tra gli altri, non spicco, non sono l’eroe che salverà la patria né il fascista che scenderà in piazza per rivendicare la sua ignoranza. Sono contro il comunismo, non canto “Bella ciao”, ma non nutro certo simpatia né per Mussolini, né per Hitler. Questi regimi sono tutti uguali perché partono dalla stessa mano, perché il potere è Uno. Se vuoi degli esempi concreti della disinformazione di cui spesso vi cibate, te ne faccio uno recente. Qualche giorno fa un ragazzo gay è stato picchiato da dieci africani: silenzio di tomba. Se l’autore del gesto fosse stato un gruppo di bianchi, la notizia sarebbe finita in prima pagina in tutti i giornali e telegiornali. Ma cosa cambia? La violenza è sempre violenza, in questi casi. È ugualmente (molto) grave. Quel povero ragazzo malmenato avrà giustizia? E non si starà forse chiedendo perché di lui abbiano parlato in pochi? È questo, che io condanno: il non voler mettere tutte le vite sullo stesso piano. Perché è facile parlare di uguaglianza (anche se siamo tutti diversi), ma se poi ci sono delinquenti che sono più protetti di altri, la questione diventa a dir poco irritante. E non sto neanche qui a citare ulteriori casi di violenza in cui la cittadinanza del colpevole è omessa. O si omette sempre, o non si omette mai. La riservatezza è garantita solo a giorni alterni? “La legge è uguale per tutti”, è la scritta che campeggia nei tribunali. Ciò non vale però per i giornalisti (che io chiamo giornalai), per chi li comanda, e per chi è al vertice della piramide. Grazie per la domanda, e l’augurio di uno splendido 2020 a te.

The Alexa vs. Google Assistant battle

At the CES high-tech conference, there’s no shortage of devices that come with voice-activated helpers: smart TVs, cars, pianos - and even a toilet… No matter who makes the hardware, however, the virtual aide inside is likely to be one of two: Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant. For example, ShadeCraft, the maker of a new device that lets garden parasols be controlled by voice, has chosen Alexa. Users can ask Alexa to open or close the sunshades mechanically, or play music via Bloom’s speakers. ShadeCraft wants to integrate Alexa completely, so that voice commands such as ordering Amazon products or asking what the weather will be like could then be done from the patio as well as the living room.

Amazon has made it hassle-free to add Alexa to products, by offering the assistant on a single chip - the Alexa Connect Kit. It has been available for a few months now, but at CES Google just announced their equivalent tool with a strikingly similar name - Google Assistant Connect. However, any product using that chip will have to wirelessly connect to a Google smart device, which will process voice data.

So how do the two competing products compare? Google Assistant, for example, tends to be better at answering queries about the wider world than Alexa. It also has exclusive access to some of the firm’s other products, letting users control Chromecast audio streams or display YouTube and Google Maps on devices with screens. Alexa, by contrast, is more widely supported by third-party products and has more apps.

Many firms think that their customers should be able to choose which assistant they will interact verbally with. For instance, Sonos has shown off a prototype smart speaker that allows users to select either Alexa or Google Assistant, though it isn’t possible to activate them both at the same time.

The problem is that interacting with multiple virtual helpers through one device could get confusing. “Say an alarm goes off on the speaker," writes Dieter Bohn at tech site The Verge. "You might not know whether it was Alexa or Google that set it off, and you’d be stuck guessing which one to ask to stop while it beeps.” However, in time, people may well become accustomed to using both assistants interchangeably, and even others like Apple’s Siri or Samsung’s Bixby, depending on what they want to do. Consumers “will be entrenched in one of those ecosystems and so the manufacturer of appliances is not going to want to lose sales to consumers who prefer one of them,“ said Ross Rubin at market analysts Reticle Research to the BBC.

Amazon is estimated to have 41% of the global smart speaker market while Google comes in second, taking 28%. "Alexa had made the first-mover advantage and for a few years, that was the dominant integration technology at CES,” explains Rubin. But Google has stepped up its presence. At the showcase, Alphabet placed Google Assistant front and center in rolling out a slew of new integrations and capabilities, integrations that place Assistant in third-party devices like Sonos (SONO) speakers and Instant Pots, and a tool called Google Assistant Connect, which lets device makers enable Assistant on any device.

Some, though, remain sceptical that voice assistants add much value to most products. “They’re putting Alexa in everything and I’m getting a little bit tired of it,” one user-interface specialist from a major car-maker told the BBC at CES. “If I want to open my toilet why should I tell Alexa to open my toilet instead of opening it myself?”

But Mr Rubin thinks that there are certain gadgets where the benefit of hands-free control does make sense. Take kitchen appliances, for instance. Instead of trying to finger a recipe book or smartphone with - literally - butter fingers, you can ask a voice assistant to call out the directions or repeat something if you need to hear it again.

So it seems the war between Google and Amazon in the smart home market has just begun. In the future, new opportunities will be unlimited. According to a recent research by RBC Capital Markets, by 2021, Amazon could see about 5% of its total revenue – equivalent to $18 billion to $19 billion per year – from Alexa-related functions. That revenue would be driven by not just device sales, but by incremental growth in voice shopping and platform revenues across Alexa’s rapidly growing base of installed devices, which includes both Amazon devices and Alexa-enabled third-party gadgets.
