Why I can't accept the BNHA epilogue. (Spoilers!!!)

Before I start, I'm a BKDK shipper, and I truly believe their relationship is the most important in all of BNHA. I have my own opinions, so I don't want any Izu///Ocha shippers here, because I don't want to argue with you. If you don't agree with something, don't be mean.

I'm saying many points in one long post, so I apologize if I somehow lost my thoughts in the process. Sorry for mistakes too.

1. Short summary of the ending

With the recent leaks out, I can't just sit around and pretend that nothing happened. We all know that the ending of MHA was off. It wasn't what we wanted, and I dare to say that it isn't what Horikoshi wanted either. The question is, why would someone writing manga for 10 years end his own work this way?

Let's start with the chapter 430. We got the timeskip, and everything ended neutral for all characters (relationship wise). It wasn't the best ending, we still lost characters that clearly should have stayed alive. Shigaraki, Toga and Dabi are gone. The only characters who will probably remember them are Spinner and Compress, while Spinner is in a hospital and Compress in a jail. Why? Was it necessary to kill the characters who needed saving the most? Throughout the whole manga, we are reminded that we can't save everyone, but we should try anyway. That's why we are left with the reasoning "at least their hearts were saved".

Okay, so what now? How will the society move on? Will they realize their mistakes? The hero ranking system is surely gone now, right?

That would be an option if it wasn't for the newest chapter. Hero ranking system still exists. So what changed? Heroes won the war, so why didn't we get ANYTHING regarding how the system changed?

Let's talk about the newest chapter. Personally, I see this chapter as something that totally changes the whole manga. It's the final chapter, we should get the missing pieces for this whole ending to make sense! Instead we got something completely unrelated to the story, and on top of it all, hints at the MC being in love with the female lead. After 430 chapters. Yes, they could have a nice relationship, but it's too late to start in the final chapter. It just erases everything that happened so far, and especially their own characters.

2. Ochako and Toga

Ochako is a character who loves seeing smiles and happy people. She wanted to help her parents with money. Then, she fell in love with Deku. Later, she meets Himiko, a queer girl, who loves talking about love. They fight, and Himiko decides to give blood to the girl she loves. Blood is equal to LOVE in her eyes, and Ochako knows it. The fact that Toga died still doesn't sit right with me, but I'll talk about something else now.

Eight years later, Ochako still sees her ghost. What does Himiko want to tell her, exactly? Next thing we see is Himiko pushing Ochako to Deku. Using a dead character to get two other characters together is...definitely something. Toga died, and this was her role in the story? Really? Why don't we see Ochako working as a hero instead? Helping children like Himiko? Himiko deserved to see that. Ochako has a nice personality, but it just goes back to Deku over and over again. The newest chapter proves that nothing changed.

3. Izuku and Katsuki throughout the manga

Moving on to my favorite character, Izuku. We know that Izuku never says anything he's really thinking. This started when he unlocked Blackwhip. Monoma insulting Katsuki WAS the reason for it. And when All Might asks about it (with Katsuki sitting there too), Izuku says he doesn't know.

From this point, we know literally NOTHING about what Izuku is thinking. Throughout the whole vigilante arc to the end of the war. Nothing that would really stand out as the MC saying his inner thoughts.

During Katsuki's apology, he asks if Izuku remembers what Katsuki said before, and Izuku doesn't know again. (Trauma can lead to forgetting things, which I also think is the case here.)

Now, Izuku knows he has to control his heart (words he got from Banjo). We see these lines appear when Izuku is losing control, and when seeing dead Katsuki. And it happened before, when Monoma insulted him. Control your heart = Katsuki. It's sad we don't see anything about this later in the manga too.

Izuku got saved by Katsuki THREE times (when stabbed, during vigilante arc and in the war). Izuku never comments on this. However, he has to realize it's because of him.

And that's when I get back to his own thoughts. We don't know much about what he truly FEELS. I stand by the point that Izuku is unreliable narrator, because he is writing this story.

Another point I want to make is about Katsuki's death. We don't see any comments on it from anyone. He died, so why aren't people talking about it for god's sake? The hospital scene with Izuku was truly good, I liked how they talked about it, BUT Izuku is now dealing with another problem, and that is the death of Tenko.

4. More about Izuku and Ochako

Later, he meets Spinner. We learn that Shigaraki was his hero, who Izuku killed, even though he tried to save him. He admits that he could even be called a murderer. Spinner plans to write a book about the league, but is that it? Is that really it?

When Izuku meets Ochako at the cliff, he calls her "my hero". Ochako was previously having a breakdown about Himiko, and now Izuku comes and praises her for what she has done for him. When hearing him, Ochako returns immediately to talking about Himiko. That's when they hold hands and the class comes in too. The only person to check on Izuku is KATSUKI. The point I'm trying to make is that Izuku suffers from the some outcome as Ochako, they both didn't save a person who needed it the most. But Izuku is the one giving comfort again, while completely ignoring his own feelings and deciding to help someone else instead. He didn't say anything during the epilogue regarding his feelings, which is not right, as he is the MC after all!

Time passes, and Izuku becomes a teacher. As we learn later, he would become a teacher even if he still had OFA. BUT!! Katsuki made him a new suit, making his dream come true!! Katsuki never gave up on Izuku and Izuku can now be a hero again!

5. Hands

Katsuki's and Izuku's relationship is about reaching your hand. Izuku reached his hand to Katsuki first, and he refused. Now, we see Katsuki reaching his hand to Izuku. But do we though? I think everyone expected to see them holding hands at least ONCE. Which we did, but it wasn't really a closing point for their relationship. Throughout the whole manga, we are waiting for this moment. Wee see Kirishima reaching out to Katsuki, and Iida reaching out to Izuku. These both moments happened because Izuku and Katsuki couldn't be the one reaching their hand. We've been waiting for their handhold for FOREVER and we didn't get it.

6. Character writing

Now back to Izuku's character. Why does he feel so empty in the recent chapters? The writing is off. Very off. Izuku has always admired Katsuki. He's his best friend, and when Katsuki gave him the suit, we would expect the new chapter to be about THIS. Instead we got Izuku refusing Katsuki's offer for the agency and him talking to Ochako again. Izuku has always admired Katsuki. The whole manga is about how even though All Might was the great hero in his eyes, Katsuki was the person actually in his life! The Izuku we know wouldn't be so heartless about it. He would talk about Katsuki's new car, he would comment on the card, and he would praise him when they meet again as heroes! This is so out of character to me and I think other people feel it too. The only explanation left is that Izuku is still fighting his own feelings and is still really hurting. Katsuki being low in the ranks is also not right, as being number one has always been his goal.

That's when I get to the Shonen Jump problem. BNHA ended WITHOUT any ships confirmed. Which was great! Everyone could do whatever they wanted! That was the end of the manga, but the new chapter comes in. It feels like it wasn't meant to be there at all. Why confirm ships after the manga ends? What does it add to the story? The ship didn't get any development at all, so why now? We know that there have been some changes in Shonen Jump editors, and I have strong feeling that these two points are connected.

Sadly, it isn't uncommon for two characters to end up together without any development in Shonen Jump. I'd like to use Demon slayer as an example (spoilers!!->). Tanjiro ends up with Kanao, they had some nice moments, but nothing really outstanding happens. Inosuke ends up with Aoi. We see this at the end of the manga, and not many people would expect this outcome. (<- I genuinely think that this ending is still a good one tho.)

But when I look at Izuku and Ochako, they are really alike. They both had their own villain, and they both wanted to save them. However, they both fail and try to move on. I don't think that the story should end with them in a romantic relationship, I really don't.

That's why I can say that this wasn't what Horikoshi had in mind for the ending. And I have many problems with the quality of the new chapter too.

7. Errors

1. The panels. Horikoshi has been doing this for 10 years, and suddenly, it doesn't look like his style. Everything feels really cramped. There are no sound effects, which is also really typical for his panelling.

2. The background. It's blurry and it feels unfinished (the city scenes).

3. Ochako uses all of her fingers. Her quirk did evolve, but she NEVER uses all of her fingers when holding something. Horikoshi pays attention to detail, and this is something that he would remember.

4. Izuku's scar. Hori shaved his head off and the design changed. Why is the scar missing in some panels??

5. There is more to it, like the suitcase looking different in different panels, or weird hand angles.

I'm not saying it's AI at all! It just doesn't sit right with me.

8. The end

And now, the handhold. Horikoshi says hands are the most expressive part of the body. So, what did this handhold mean? It doesn't feel romantic at all. We see hands often in MHA, and there are plenty of examples that feel way more tender than this one. It just doesn't make any sense to end the chapter this way, and expect it to be romantic.

What pains me the most is that it was so unnecessary to show us Katsuki being so...sad. He didn't smile once in the entire chapter, but he's smiling in 430. We have no idea what he'll do now, so why end the chapter like this? It doesn't make sense at all. Another thing I didn't like was Katsuki calling Izuku "Deku" (it was safe to assume he only calls him Deku while doing hero work) + we don't see All Might at all.

I definitely didn't say everything I wanted to say, but that's it for now. My heart is breaking, because I love My hero academia so much. I will definitely write more later, because I can't believe that this is what we got.

i think its really normal that people are upset over mha ending??? like i’m sorry but have u guys EVER been passionate about ANYTHING. I don’t agree with the bullying aspect of this but these people who are getting upset over mha ending are the same people who have cultivated the fandom. Who have written multiple fics, published artworks for this piece of media that queerbaited them SO FUCKING HARD. And the problem isn’t the ship itself it’s rather the corruption of character’s original beliefs that shaped the very narrative itself. Do you not realise that Izuku’s sudden apathy towards Bakugo is literally contradicts his stance on their friendship that shaped the very narrative itself. For Horikoshi to randomly jeopardise what he built for over a decade just to propel a relationship is simply unbecoming and especially since a major part of the fanbase was deeply connected to both bakugo and izuku. Expecting people to be nonchalant about such a drastic change that literally ruined every character’s development, including Uraraka, is simply stupid lol.

I’ve processed this. I know we don’t have the whole story but it’s definitely looking down for bkdk at this point and I’ve managed to come to terms with that.

I’m perfectly happy to ignore this extra chapter, if I have to. But if I do have to work it into my post-canon headcanon then I can work with that too. Bkdk is still endgame for me, whether or not izu*cha sails for a bit. I can even work with heartbroken Katsuki because it still fits within his characterization for him to feel like he doesn’t deserve happiness or that he’s never quite going to atone for his past mistakes.

Izu rejecting the offer to work with him is more of a stretch but overall can still fit within the framework of a depressed war hero with PTSD who runs from his feelings because they’re too weird, who settles for the safe bet on a platonic-leaning friendship instead.

So yeah, this isn’t going to break me. I wish it hadn’t happened like this (I was in no way anticipating bkdk would sail, but I liked the open ending of 430 that anyone could run with), but I love bkdk and can’t imagine a world where they don’t love each other so I’m gonna stick around and fix what I can

before i start, i just want to say that this is my opinion based on A VERY SMALL AMOUNT OF LEAKS I SAW. i don’t know the rest of the context and i’m really trying not to say leaks, i’m really upset i saw these ones cause i wanted to experience myself but now i just kinda need to get this out😭

my opinion most likely will change as well once i actually read the epilogue, i don’t know much more then what i say here about it so please don’t come at me. i don’t want anymore spoilers.

okay i’m a bit sad, cause i heard saw that katsuki offered izuku a job at his agency, but he turned it to down and ran off to ochako

i have no clue of any more context really cause i’m trying to avoid spoilers but honestly, putting my personal shipping opinions aside, it doesn’t seem very izuku like.

i don’t know but just all of the progress and development they’ve gone through with their friendship, it just felt off to me

also i saw that katsuki is in the number 15 spot on the hero rankings and honestly that made me a bit bummed as well. part of katsuki’s whole character is he passion to be the number one hero. i know that it takes years to climb to the top but katsuki’s so determined and all aspects of personality leave it for it to not make much. i mean monoma’s ramked higher then him. i have hope that he will be number one soon in the future but i’m kinda sad we didn’t get to see it ourselves

also i really hope that he and izuku do some kind of hero work together because after that moment with them in chp 430. that was such and important moment in there friendship and i’m so happy that they still seem like our close, good friends, are on good speaking terms and seem to have a mutual trust and understanding. it makes my heart so happyyyyy.

uhhh so i’m pretty sure that’s it. don’t get me wrong, i love my ships. bakudeku, dabihawks, kamijirou, and quite a few others make me very happy but honestly, i kinda hope no ships are officially made canon. lots of the toxicity in this fandom comes from the shipping communities so i would kinda like to avoid that😭

im entitled to my own opinions and so is everyone other fan. even if my or no ships at all are made canon, i’ll live, it’s not the biggest deal ever. i also wanna remind y’all that most of the more popular shops in anime are rarely canon, but they’re still good and fun and lots of people ship them. plus mha is a shonen as well and i feel like people forget that sometimes somehow.

i feel like i get really wrapped up in everyone else’s opinions and how they feel about the ending(s) on social media that i kinda forget to have my own opinions on these kind of things. i really like getting excited about my interests, especially mha so i’ve been trying to ignore as much spoilers as i can and i just want to be excited and happy about how we still get an epilogue after the final chapter :33
