Neck Pain: Common Causes
While neck pain is often caused by direct stress in the neck, did you know it can also stem from imbalances in other parts of the body? For example, the presence of scar tissue can introduce new dimensions to explore. Here are some ways scar tissue can contribute to neck pain, which are often overlooked by traditional therapists:
Fascial Connections: Fascia is a connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles and organs throughout the body. Since fascia is interconnected, scar tissue in one area can create tension or restrictions that cause compensatory changes and pain elsewhere, such as in the neck. For instance, restrictions in the organs’ mobility, known as visceral restrictions, may affect the body’s movement and function, leading to pain in other regions.
Altered Biomechanics and Posture: Scar tissue can disrupt movement patterns or posture as the body compensates for stiffness or discomfort. For example, abdominal scar tissue from surgery can subtly alter posture over time, which may strain the neck muscles and lead to pain.
Nerve Irritation or Entrapment: Scar tissue may compress or irritate nerves, causing pain to radiate to other areas. If treatment focuses solely on where the pain is felt without addressing its actual source, it may provide only temporary relief. For example, scar tissue in the upper back or shoulder could irritate nerves that refer pain to the neck. Without recognizing the root cause, treatments focused on the neck alone will likely be short-lived.
Chronic Inflammation: Scar tissue can trigger ongoing inflammation, which may spread to nearby tissues or lead to a systemic inflammatory response. This inflammation can affect the neck, contributing to pain and discomfort.
Recognizing the body’s interconnectedness underscores the importance of a holistic treatment approach. A holistic physiotherapist looks beyond muscles and joints to understand how the body’s internal organs (viscera) impact overall balance, harmony, and health. Since physical symptoms often relate to other aspects of health, the goal is to treat and rehabilitate the whole person.
At BMY Holistic Wellness Center, our holistic physiotherapist is trained in multiple modalities, such as visceral manipulation, craniosacral therapy, and clinical Pilates, to create a well-rounded, customized treatment plan for neck pain. Our approach also acknowledges the connection between physical and mental health, ensuring comprehensive care. We collaborate closely with clients and our wellness team to integrate therapies like homeopathy, biofeedback, and somatic experiencing, supporting a more complete return to health and wellness.
