I witnessed a little discourse over this in some Facebook entomology groups and hadn’t even realized people do this at all, so if you’re in wildlife rehabilitation, especially if you ever deal with rare, endangered animals? Please DON’T worm and delouse them just for the hell of it. If they seem to be suffering from a debilitating parasite overload, sure, but for pete’s sake don’t just give a wild animal a flea bath because you think it’s extra nice and you want to be “thorough.” People think parasites are “diseases” that mean an animal is “sick” because that’s how we regard them for us, our pets and our livestock, but in the wild, every single individual animal lives from birth to death with parasites every single day. It’s normal. It only causes undue suffering under unusual circumstances, and more to the point, almost every animal has UNIQUE parasites. Almost every single species of bird in particular has a louse found exclusively in the feathers of only that one species. If you take in a critically endangered raptor then you’re taking in its critically endangered louse, a species of equal ecological and scientific value. Don’t douse a wild animal with pesticide and medicine it doesn’t need. Conservationists once caused the total extinction of a species this way: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colpocephalum_californici
