Tired And Unloved

My cats are getting old.

I tried my best, but

Freeze

Oh my god

He's stepping towards me

Or I Freeze. 

Somehow my body always chooses

Any hint of danger

And I'm stuck in place like an ice pop. 

I want to swing,

And fight like others have. 

I don't mind being afraid

But I want to do something about that fear

Unfreeze. 

He's angry. 

That's nothing new, 

I've dealt with anger;

I've dealt with his anger before. 

But I'm always stuck in place

Every possible solution, 

Every retort stuck in my head. 

It's lodged in my throat like a cherry seed, 

And I freeze. 

I think and I think

And I sit in fear

Unable to move as he screams

His anger burning the world around us both

What do I do?

What do I say? 

All the words tumbling as an afterthought

The only coherent idea is run

But I can't even do that. 

I need to fight back. 

I can't stay stuck forever

Or I will be dead before I know it. 

But what response can I give

That won't lead to me being killed, 

Literally or figuratively.

I spent all that time frozen. 

He's not even angry any more;

I still am,

But the fear outweighs the need for violence. 

I spent too long trying to unfreeze

I didn't get a chance to stand up for myself. 

I spent too long being afraid, 

I didn't get to make him afraid too.

Favorite Person

I am a raging fire

Burning all the places I once called home, 

All the people I once warmed. 

Then I am a soothing river

Reflecting memories I do not understand, 

Feeling emotions I cannot express. 

There is a battle inside my head;

Both sides fighting for a peace that will never arrive, 

Not if we do not stop and ask for help. 

But this is a war that I cannot win,

Cheesecake

I never learned how to make cheesecake. 

I thought I did, 

But the way I made it was never quite right. 

I added too much sugar, 

Not enough salt, 

And the shape always ended up wonky. 

I still, to this day, don't know why

I can't make cheesecake. 

If it's because my parents never showed me the right way, 

Always messing it up and trying to fix it

Just to break it again. 

Maybe it's because I learned about cheesecake

At too young of an age, 

But the only examples of cheesecake I'd seen were rotten and molded. 

Maybe I'm just not made to make cheesecake. 

Maybe it has nothing to do with my childhood or my parents, 

Maybe cheesecake just isn't for me. 

I want to learn how to make cheesecake, 

With just the right amount of sugar and salt, 

And fit to be just the right shape. 

But I never learned how to make cheesecake, 

And at this point, I don't think I ever will.

To see that the rest of the world views their pain as beauty?

It hit around 7:43pm

(5:43am your time). 

You were setting boundaries for sensory overloads

And all I could think was

"Teach me how to take care of you".

I've never loved someone the way I love you, 

My head is full of thoughts like

Waking up at an ungodly hour of the morning

To cook you breakfast while you sleep. 

Or holding your hand and 

Taking you through Disney World like it's your first time

Despite both of us knowing you've been more than I have. 

I realized I was in love with you, 

Really, really in love with you, 

When the loudest thought I had

Was "I love you. 

Teach me how to take care of you.

The soft kind of love 

The "hold me as I cry" kind of love

The "not focusing in class because you're all I can think about" kind of love

I didn't know this kind of love was something I could experience

But you wrap your arms around me and suddenly I'm home again. 

The warm kind of love

The "I want to know everything about you. Especially the small stuff" kind of love

The "staying up past midnight to keep talking to you" kind of love

The sweet kind of love

The sunny kind of love

The you kind of love.

I pause. 

A part of me wants to get defensive. 

Wants to shove you away

Tell you I don't need to be "taken care of"

I've done everything myself for so long

The idea of giving it to someone else feels almost painful. 

Another part of me, though

A larger, louder, warmer part of me

Says it sounds nice. 

To be taken care of. 

To not have the weight of the world

And my own life

On my shoulders. 

"I'll take care of you"

Please do. 

Please hold me, 

Take some of the responsibility, 

Some of the pain, 

And give me a chance to live a little.
