Hi, sorry but I don't really read grindeldore fics amymore because I find it messes with my writing and I have a very specific characterization for each of them in my head which is difficult to find fics for, so you would be better off asking someone else :)

While I have no doubt that Albus definitely feels like no one loves him (or rather, that he is undeserving of it), see his comments about not being the kind of man that could save the world, calling himself dangerous in CC, shooting down Newt's attempt at comfort after telling him of Ariana, walking away, alone, from Jacob's bakery at the end of tSoD, praising Jacob and Newt for their good qualities I think he feels he himself lacks, etc. I feel that this particular comment was more of a projection on Gellert's part than an attempt to manipulate/wound. He's clearly shaken by what happened, and although he has not so far confessed to any feeling himself, the mere touch of Albus' hand was enough to make him stop, how he looked at Albus when he said he had "never been your enemy then or now" and the question itself (who will love you now, implying that he was the one who loved Albus before) certainly implies their existence. And it's Albus who walks into a crowd of people, away from him. And it's Gellert who is left standing alone.

Their hearts beating in rythm under each other's hands. Their pact is breaking. Wands are lowered. The hands trail away. Dumbeldore steps back. Grindelwald steps forward, as if to follow him. His gaze lingering, Dumbledore turns away.

"Who will love you now, Dumbledore?" Grindelwald asks, trembling. The pendant hits the stone floor and breaks into pieces. The mist fades. "You are all alone."

Dumbledore walks into a crowd of people. Grindelwald is left standing, alone.

Is he really speaking of Albus, or himself?

These two overpowered frenemie wizards will end me. Seriously.

Just the way Albus facial expression turns panicky as Gellert approaches him.

I'm wondering whether Gellert attempted to touch Albus, tenderly brush his palm over his face or even dared to kiss him...

Albus is so flustered here. He sees the temptation but decides to step back.

Rants:

- what was the point of either Queenie or Credence going to the darkside if that was all it took to make them change their minds?

- the explanation for Aurelius was... ok, I guess? It could have been worse but again what was the point?

- what was the point of Credence being Gellerts supposed super weapon when it took Albus like thirty seconds to kick his ass?

- the bloodpact breaking was kind of anticlimactic

- no wonder they managed to confuse Gellert cos I'm also confused

Pros:

- the cafe scene and their smiles when seeing each other

- the way Gellert kept seeing Albus face (yeah he was trying to find out what he was up to but let me live)

- Aberforth & Albus relationship being very fraught with tension (I love angst)

- the duel, the way it almost seemed like a dance, them stopping when they rested their hands on each other's hearts

- Who will love you now? And Gellert's obvious distress

- I was never your enemy, then or now

Well I pirated FB3 and besides the grindeldore moments (most we had seen already in clips) idk how much was gained from it. They should have just made a trilogy or smth

By now we have three(ish) different accounts of the duel

Aberforth in Deathly Hallows

‘And there was an argument … and I pulled out my wand, and he pulled out his, and I had the Cruciatus Curse used on me by my brother’s best friend – and Albus was trying to stop him, and then all three of us were duelling, and the flashing lights and the bangs set her off, she couldn’t stand it –’

The colour was draining from Aberforth’s face as though he had suffered a mortal wound.

‘– and I think she wanted to help, but she didn’t really know what she was doing, and I don’t know which of us did it, it could have been any of us – and she was dead.’

Albus in Deathly Hallows

‘And then … you know what happened. Reality returned, in the form of my rough, unlettered, and infinitely more admirable brother. I did not want to hear the truths he shouted at me. I did not want to hear that I could not set forth to seek Hallows with a fragile and unstable sister in tow.

‘The argument became a fight. Grindelwald lost control. That which I had always sensed in him, though I pretended not to, now sprang into terrible being. And Ariana … after all my mother’s care and caution … lay dead upon the floor.’

Albus in Secrets of Dumbledore

"Gellert and I made plans to go away together. My brother did not approve. One night he confronted us. Voices were raised, threats made, Aberforth drew his wand, which was foolish- I drew my wand, which was even more foolish. Gellert just laughed. No one heard Ariana coming down the stairs. Can't say for certain if it was mine- the spell. Doesn't really matter. One minute she was there and the next she was gone."

What they agree on:

1) there was a verbal argument about their plans to leave

2) Aberforth drew out his wand first

3) They don't know which one of them did it

Albus and Aberforth in DH:

4) Grindelwald lost control

In tSoD Albus minimises Gellert's role and says that Albus drew his wand after Aberforth rather than Gellert

At this stage it's hard to say what the reason is for this difference, but I can think of a few:

1) Albus blames himself for it, so minimises Gellert's role to Newt

2) this is a retcon due to the bloodpact which would be stupid cos they could have invented another way for the pact to broken

3) The event is very traumatising for Albus and this is case of unreliable narrator
