I love Halloween. The one time of year when everyone wears a mask, not just me. People think it's fun to pretend you're a monster. Me, I spend my life pretending I'm not. Brother, friend, boyfriend… All part of my costume collection. Some people might call me a fraud.

Dexter and Isaak could have been one of the most well-written and powerful slow-burn enemies to lovers pairings and no one can convince me otherwise.

the messy and violent beginning of their relationship; Dexter killing Isaak's lover without knowing he was Isaak's lover, and Isaak later being obsessed with Dexter

this set the clear and strong purpose in their relationship and why they wanted each other dead

Isaak waited for Dexter to come home with his knives

Dexter went to Issak’s home and killed the person who tried to kill Isaak because "Isaak was his, and he wasn't going to share"

Dexter was the only person Isaak shared his secret about being gay with. their conversation at the gay bar was personal, and Isaak allowed himself to be that vulnerable in front of Dexter, despite the fact Dexter was Isaak's archenemy

Dexter was the only person whom Isaak asked for help when he was scared, after learning George ordered 2 hitmen to take him out, despite the fact Dexter was Isaak's archenemy and despite how prideful Isaak was

the angst

when Dexter and Isaak agreed to throw their weapons overboard together, after Isaak’s last hitman was dead, and how it symbolized they were able to trust each other and be completely unarmed in each other’s presence

Dexter eventually tried to save Isaak's life and try to get him to the hospital after he was shot

Dexter honored Isaak's final wish to be returned to Viktor in the sea, despite everything Isaak put him through (despite the fact Hannah’s life was still at risk)

despite everything Dexter put Isaak through, Isaak allowed Dexter to carry out his final wish

the tragic ending. Dexter was with him when he died, and in the end Dexter helped him reunite with Viktor in the sea in the afterlife

if the show were released in 2024, they would have taken over AO3

Additional thoughts about Dexter because I can't contain how much I'm enjoying this show:

They make the villains so human. Like yes, they're horrible people, but they're not animals. There's something deeply relatable about them, and the show doesn't gloss over the horrible events in their past that made them so destructive.

But also, you still gotta die.

And like, that's how the world is. Everyone is someone's baby, someone's dad, someone's neighbor who wouldn't hurt a fly. But that doesn't mean you get to keep hurting people.

Also, just the fact that Dexter is such a TANK adds a hilarious and comforting aspect to the show. Like "Oh noooo, my hands are tied..." NOT! Die, woman killer!

He will break his own hand to get out of a predicament. He will get stabbed, get shot, lose a tooth, he doesn't fucking care. He is NOT dying today, and he is NOT letting anyone he loves get hurt. The villains are completely unprepared for the force of nature he is, because they’re used to overpowering regular people who have fawn and freeze responses.

He's 220 lbs of adorable psychopath freight train, and you're safe when you're with him. I can't get enough of that dynamic.
