season 1 of Dexter suffers from the fact that it's so effortlessly good. like, when I first watched it I was like "that was a solid season of television," and only when I analysed it further and realised how many emotional arcs it all juggles, how so many characters get to have development and depth, how masterfully the writers managed to change genre from their source material, going as far as to change the ending to be just that much more cathartic and emotionally resonant, I realised that it's probably one of the most well crafted seasons of television I have ever watched. But unlike season 4 it doesn't really wear its cleverness on its sleeve so I feel like a lot of people never realise just how good that season really was.

One thought that doesn't leave my head is how genuinely Deb felt great in a relationship with Brian. She liked him so freaking much and they were having so much fun together. At this point it's even sad how it wasn't really true Brian, that all the things he did he was doing only to get closer to Dexter. I liked these two so much.
