Long short: get better arguments

Love people who when I post anything environment come at me with “oh yeah but you probably do XYZ so take that!!”

Like buddy, first of all, everything has an impact. Everything. It’s about what impact you want to have. Everything is going to affect something in some way.

Secondly: I live on a semi isolated island, power is nearly 100% hydro here, I drive a third hand EV, I have solar, tank water, self contained everything, I’m literally allergic to processed foods, I haven’t eaten palm oil (knowingly!) since like 2015, I eat meat maybe twice a week and it’s local, organic free range stuff that I can literally drive past and check to make sure they’re doing okay, all my groceries are local trade (mostly), I use reusable period wear, all my clothes are second hand, I’ve worked in both land care and animal care, I’ve been protesting since I was a child, I’ve advocated for numerous different things and organised group protests and the like. I think I might not be doing that

I’m not saying you have to do all that or guilting anyone in anyway over what they can/can’t do, but think of a better argument then “I know nothing about you but how dare you say we should care about the planet when I bet you don’t” it’s getting annoying.

Depending on how the Australia social media ban comes through, I will be leaving social media. I am well over the 16 age limit ban, but I refuse to put my legal name and ID onto any online platform.

They may claim that it won’t be recorded, but that is unlikely to last. I do not want my future employment, my family or my friends to be able to look me up online and find my tumblr account.

I don’t want to be outed as gender queer, I don’t want them to know I write fanfiction and I don’t want people to know about my sexual orientation.

The only way I will continue to be online is if they can prove beyond reasonable doubt that my ID and information will not be recorded.

I’m making this post so that people know why I may just vanish one day.

Australian KOSA is occurring right now

They are banning anyone under the age of sixteen from almost all media sites, including YouTube now.

They are including sites they promised they wouldn’t include

They are using inaccurate face scanning tech that does not accurately know your age

The other option is using government IDs

Neither is wanted.

hi so come December internet privacy in Australia will be dead.

people in Australia will have heard, those outside may have not, there was recently legislation passed to ban under 16s from social media.

how will this be done? age verification technology, of course! this means you have to do one of the following:

- give your credit card details to a private age verification company

- give your government issued photo id to a private age verification company

- give your device usage data to a private age verification company

- use an extremely unreliable face scan (and give the data from it to a private age verification company)

the preliminary report into the technology has said it's "robust, private, and effective".

it also notes that hey these companies sure seem to want more data and less privacy than the absolute minimum for some reason.

now a lot of people support this (at least in theory) because hey, kids face harms on social media. and it's just social media right?

nope.

through regulation, which does not need to be debated or voted on in government, search engines are also going to be restricted without age verification.

without giving your data to a private company Australians will only be able to access safe search results. which doesn't sound like the worst thing (in theory) until you remember safe search is known to accidentally also restrict such things as age appropriate sex ed. and health information. and anything about queer people, especially trans people. and like, basically anything else that's always deemed "inappropriate".

that's just what's already passed! in phase 2 regulations, age verification gates have also been proposed for:

- actual porn sites

- gambling sites

- app stores

- messaging apps

my point is, even if you support some or all of this in theory, is this really what anyone wanted? we didn't vote for it and neither did our elected officials. this has extreme implications for privacy across the internet, not even getting into the implications of the restrictions themselves. I'm not a fan of them for a number of reasons, but I don't think arguments about sex ed and freedom of expression and going after companies instead of individuals is going to get to people the way the reality of data and privacy violations inherent in these regulations will.

there aren't any open petitions opposing this. I don't know how to respond, bar for contacting the office of the eSafety Commissioner. so I guess you can do that.

but what seriously disturbs me is nobody is even talking about this. please get the word out about what's happening because come December a lot of people are going to be shocked by the reality of the social media legislation and the regulations packed alongside it.
