Pairing: Nakahara Chuuya x Dazai Osamu

Warnings: Cursing, possibly OOC (they're hard to write)

A/N: The promised happy ending. I might make a part three if this does well

Chuuya didn't expect to open his eyes again. So when he does, and the first thing he sees is Dazai Osamu, he does a double-take. Quickly blinking, rubbing his eyes, blinking again. But Dazai's still there, smiling down at him in amusement.

"Morning, sleepyhead," the stupid mackerel says. "You've been out for a few days. You're lucky I found you in time."

Chuuya sits up, his head nearly hitting Dazai's. He stares at the other man in shock. In truth, Chuuya has no idea what he should be feeling. He's happy (though he doesn't know why, considering how much he hates Dazai). He's angry, and for some reason he also wants to cry. But he can't get any words out.

"That was pretty stupid of you, y'know," Dazai continues. "Using Corruption without me around. You were pretty hurt. You're lucky we have Yosano-sensei here."

Chuuya finally manages to force out a quiet, "H-how?"

"How what?" Dazai asks.

"How are you alive?!" Chuuya exclaims. "There's no way Mori-san would've ever let you live! You betrayed us all! How did you get out alive?!"

Dazai's face falls. "I . . . had some help," he murmurs. "But that doesn't matter. Come on, I want you to meet everyone."

"Who? Your new friends? The ones you left me for?" Chuuya doesn't know why he's so upset. Why does he care if Dazai has new friends? Why does he care if Dazai likes other people more? He doesn't even like Dazai!

"Chuuya," Dazai starts.

"Don't 'Chuuya' me with that tone!" he exclaims. "You left me alone in there!"

"You have Akutagawa and Kouyou."

"But they aren't you! You left me, you stupid mackerel! You . . ." Why does it matter? Why does he care so much that Dazai left without him? "You should've taken me with you, idiot." Chuuya brings his knees to his chest, wrapping his arms around them and hiding his face in his arms.

Dazai's staring at him in shock. "I didn't think you'd care."

"I don't," Chuuya retorts. He knows he's lying. They both do.

"You shouldn't have used Corruption. You could've died."

Chuuya doesn't respond. He doesn't know how to.

"Chibi?" Chuuya looks up, trying to hide his teary eyes from Dazai. "I'm sorry." Dazai leans forward and gently hugs Chuuya. He stiffens at first, but slowly relaxes into it, letting his head rest on Dazai's shoulder.

"Shut up," Chuuya mutters. "Now you have to make it up to me, mackerel."

He feels Dazai smile against his hair. "Isn't being alive enough for you?"

"Hell no. I was glad when I thought you were dead," Chuuya protests.

Dazai chuckles. "Sure you were, chibi. Sure you were."

Chuuya huffs, but doesn't pull away from Dazai's embrace.

Oh. That's what that feeling is, isn't it? That's why he was so desperate to see Dazai again. That's why he felt so broken when he thought Dazai was dead.

Yeah. It is.

A/N: A bit of an AU. This takes place after Dazai's left the Port Mafia. There will be a happy ending part two, but if you want pure angst, you can just read this one as it is

Ever since Chuuya met Dazai three years ago, he'd hated the suicidal maniac. All Dazai ever did was annoy the crap out of Chuuya, so it baffled him when Mori paired them together once, and then kept pairing them up. Couldn't their boss see how little they could stand each other? Why was he always so insistent on them working together?

By the time they were eighteen, Chuuya couldn't imagine his life without the annoying bandage-covered mackerel at his side. Of course, he still hated Dazai more than anything. Of course, Dazai was the worst person he'd ever met. But Dazai grew on Chuuya like the parasite he was. He still hated Dazai, of course, but he came to accept the fact that they worked well together.

He didn't really have a choice when they became the Port Mafia's favorite duo after just their first mission together and started being known as Soukoku. Any sane person would run from just one of the duo, but when an enemy heard that Soukoku was coming, they might as well just die on the spot.

Chuuya always assumed that he and Dazai would die together, either out on the battlefield or of old age (if they ever made it that far).

He never imagined he'd have to live without Dazai.

So when Mori delivered the news of Dazai's betrayal, Chuuya didn't know what to do with himself. It's not like he missed Dazai. He was just used to having him around. The silence felt weird after three years of his constant presence.

There was no way Dazai had survived leaving the Port Mafia. He was dead, and Chuuya knew that for a fact. His idiot partner was dead. Now he could be known as the Mafia's greatest, without Dazai to drag him down. Now he could live in peace, without Dazai to annoy him. He should be happy that Dazai's gone.

So why does he feel so empty?

Wine must help. Wine always helps. He'll even break out the fancy stuff. That's sure to lift his mood.

Dazai was a plague on Chuuya's life, an annoying fly that he just couldn't kill. He should be elated to be free from him.

So why is he so sad?

Why, when he falls asleep at night, does he dream of Dazai coming back to him? Why does he dream of somehow finding Dazai alive, and the two of them running off together?

Why does he miss Dazai so much?

Why does he want to find a way to join him?

The enemy wasn't that tough, really. Chuuya could've beaten them easily. But if he uses Corruption, then someone could just tell Mori that Chuuya had no choice. The foe was too strong.

He knows the risks without Dazai around, of course. He doesn't even know why he's so willing to use Corruption without Dazai around.

A tiny voice in the back of his mind tells him that it's because he'll join Dazai, but he pushes the thought away. He doesn't want to see Dazai again.

He's using it because he should learn to control it himself, without the idiot around. Yeah, that's it.

That's what he tells himself as he feels the power engulf him.

He can't control Corruption himself. He knows that in the back of his mind. But he doesn't let himself admit that it's an excuse.

His mind usually goes blank when he uses Corruption. So why does it now show him all the memories he has of Dazai? Why is he happy to be seeing Dazai again, even if he knows it's just in his head?

Why, as his vision goes black, is his final thought of seeing Dazai again?

After spending a few weeks in the human world, you've come to the decision that it's finally time to try to figure out why you fell from Heaven.

The only way to be cast out of Heaven is to commit some sort of terrible atrocity. You have no memory of doing anything that the High Angels would've deemed exile worthy. Which means that something went terribly wrong in Heaven.

One quiet night, when May-Lee and the other workers are asleep, you decide to sneak out of the bunk house. It's dark outside, but the light from the various lamps scattered around help you to see. In all honesty, you have no idea where you're going. There's no way for you to return to Heaven, and no way for you to reach the High Angels. You consider trying the palace library, but humans aren't very knowledgeable about the otherworldly.

As you wander aimlessly through the palace ground, you hear quiet footsteps approaching behind you. Whipping around, you see the prince standing there. You bow on instinct as Jinwoo approaches you.

"What are you doing up so late?" he asks.

You lift your head, trying to quickly think of a believable response. You obviously can't tell him you're an angel who was wrongly cast out of Heaven. He either wouldn't believe you or would order you be killed on the spot. "I . . . couldn't sleep," you say. "Thought I'd go for a walk to stretch my legs."

You can see in his eyes that he barely believes you. He's clearly suspicious; not because a servant is out on a walk, but because of how you're acting.

"Well, I was looking for you anyways," he says. "I'd like to discuss something with you. Follow me." He begins to walk toward the palace, leaving you with no choice but to follow him. The two of you walk through the intricately decorated corridors, and he eventually stops in front of a pair of dark purple double doors. "This is my private study," he says. "Nobody will bother us in here." He pushes the doors open, revealing the interior of the room. The walls are lined head-to-toe in bookcases, and a wooden desk sits in front of one wall. Against the adjacent wall is a plush green sofa, which Jinwoo gestures for you to sit at, while he takes the seat at his desk.

"I'm just going to cut to the chase," he says. "You're a fallen angel, aren't you?"

You freeze. How did he know? You'd tried so hard to keep it a secret. Was it your slightly odd behavior? Your sudden appearance? Did he see your halo? Maybe it was some other factor you couldn't have controlled. But none of that matters. What matters is that he knows, and if you can convince him you aren't evil, he might help you. "Yes."

"Why did you fall?"

"I don't know."

His eyes narrow. "You've given me no reason to believe you're evil," he says, "so I'll allow you to stay for now. But my guards and I will be keeping a close eye on you. From now on, you'll be my personal attendant."

Though your first reaction is dread, you soon feel a flicker of hope. Now you'll be closer to Jinwoo, and gaining his trust is step one to your plan of getting him to help you figure out why you fell from Heaven.
