It took awhile, but eventually she stiffly pulled away. Skin stained by her sorrows, she tipped her head down and stared down at the ground, letting the last of her tears fall. “Than--k you,” she whispered, her words interrupted by a soft hiccup, but were otherwise coherent. Reece had last cried in front of someone after her mother as ripped from her life. Even then, it had only been her father around. But not he was gone too, and Mbege was dealing with the emotional aftermath.
"W-why is the sky making that angry noise? Is it going to hurt us?" [ @blindsightxd ]
“Good god, what time is it?” Mbege groaned and rolled over to glare at the small girl. “It’s not going to hurt us, go back to sleep. Or just, ya know, go away.”

“Definitely. I’m a very responsible girl. I promise.”
“Depends. Do you think you can handle the responsibility of being the goggle wearer? It’s a pretty big deal.”

Still trembling, she curled up against his chest. Burying her face in his shoulder, her tears wetting his skin. Even if she’d wanted to explain, or talk at all, she wouldn’t have been able to form the words. But it helped to be in his arms-- to have reassurance that she wasn't alone. And she clung to him, crying until the ache in her chest started to ease.

Jolting awake, her screaming intensified for a moment and her arms swung wildly through the air. The back of one hand knocked into Mbege’s cheek, and the other into his chest. Quickly she realised that the Grounder who’d been attacking her parents wasn’t the one clutching her shoulder, and that she wasn’t dreaming any longer. Her screams died and a sob wracked her tiny frame, leaving her shaking. Tears cascaded over her cheeks and dived off her chin into the dirt. She could still see so much red, so much blood-- her parents blood. “T-they--” Reece attempted to speak, to explain, to apologise, but the words caught in her throat and became tangled in tears. Speaking was a waste of breath, everything was incoherent.

Peace was not something she found easily whilst asleep, not any more. At first it had started with reliving the last moments she had with her father, over and over. And now it was watching him be torn apart by grounders, impaled on the tusks of the boars the soldiers hunted or being blown apart during the bombing at tondc. Occasionally she’d see her mother, her features faded from the years, suffering a similar fate. But every night, without fail, a scream ripped from her lungs and tears washed away the dirt and dust that always seemed to cover her cheeks. Reece’s legs were covered in scabbed-over and bleeding crescent indents from where her nails dug into her skin. Even with Mbege lying so close, her new protector, he couldn’t save her from the terrors behind her eyelids. And she screamed, and screamed and screamed.

The idea of having to leave the safety of his tent had already occurred to her and made her chest tighten. It was rather irrational for her to feel like his was more stable and safe than her own-- maybe it was his presence that made such a significant difference. But, she wasn’t going to have to leave anyway, he wasn’t going to force her out and Recee almost could have hugged him again. She didn’t though, she just lowered herself down onto the floor and curled up into a ball beside his bedroll. Since the landing, she’d taken to sleeping with her arms wrapped around knees with her chin balanced on top. At first it might have been the loss of her father leaving her feeling cold, and then the strange vicious world making her feel so small. Now, it could just be habit, or an unwillingness to open up completely festering in her behaviour. Reece was nine years old though, she wasn’t going to psychoanalyze herself or her behaviour.
Watching Mbege from atop her knees, she offered him yet another smile. “They won’t realise I’m not in my tent in the morning. As much as they say they care and will look after me, they’re too busy with their own things and family to bother with me when I’m not directly in front of them. No one will blame you of kidnapping,” she promised. And if they did, she’d defend him till her last breath.
“Thank you,” she repeated. “I don’t want to leave. The sky is scary tonight.” It was already obvious that Reece was tired. Yawning softly, her eyes slid half shut and she blinked blearily. Children had a knack for falling asleep incredibly quickly, and she was no different.

Even attempting to withholding her grin would have been a lost cause. It spilled over her features, lighting up her face with a childish glee. Reece couldn't decide whether it was the fact that he’d hugged her back and it hadn't been a moment imbued with pity and empathetic sorrow, the fact that he’d reacted much more positively to her than hitting her for waking him, or his pledge of protection and help. Or maybe it was all three. It was likely to be all three.
“I might take you up on that offer.” It was hard at first to accept that she wasn't safe like they’d been on the Ark. There was no metal bubble to separate her from the dangers of Earth. An electric fence and a few guns were the only barriers between whatever lurked within the trees and her. And she wasn't going to be kept safe by them always and forever. Reece was coming to terms with the fact that she couldn't just enjoy her childhood anymore, she had to learn how to protect herself. No one else was prepared to treat her like a girl growing up in such a harsh environment-- they all said her fathers death was making her grow up too quickly. It had, but maybe that was necessary. “Thank you,” she added, sitting back down on the ground and crossing her legs once more.

“I may be blind in one eye, but I can see what you’re doing. Will you please stop?”

Well, he’d definitely had it rough. Rougher than her and it was incredibly unlikely that she’d ever have to go through things as traumatic as Mbege and the other delinquents. “Well, at least we aren’t dead, right?” Shifting so that she was kneeling, Reece lunged forward and attacked him in a tight hug. Her arms locked around the back of his neck and she pressed her forehead against his shoulder. Sometimes a person just needed a hug, and she had the suspicion that Mbege didn’t receive all that much affection from those around him. He may hate this though, and shove her back, but it was worth the risk. “I don’t hate you, if that makes any difference. I may have just met you by barging into your, and you brought up guys dangly things, but I like you. You kept me safe from the storm.”

Tipping her head back slightly, Reece laughed for the first time since her feet had touched the ground. “I hope you’re not going to keep calling me that,” she teased. The way he spoke meant that she hadn’t taken it as an insult. But there was no other tragedy in her life. Yet. “Unless you count having my life turned on its head by crashing to Earth, there’s nothing else to add. And what about you, Mr Criminal? What’s your story?”

He was the first person to not look at her differently when they discovered she was blind. He was also the first person not to see her through a veil of pity when she mentioned being orphaned. A small smile played on her lips and she glanced down at her lap. “I’ve had practice at not seeming blind. The more obvious it is, the more people feel it’s necessary to interfere and ‘help’ me with everything I try to do. It’s only one eye and they treat me like I can’t use my own limbs.” She had become tired of the attention incredibly quickly.

“And everyone looks at me and just sees a blind, scared little orphan.” Never mind that she was only blind in one eye and was a fully functioning member of society otherwise. Reece had learned to deal with her disability, but that didn’t stop everyone else from thinking she needed a guiding hand every waking moment. Or that she was finding ways to deal with her fathers death. She may still be just a child, but she wasn’t completely incompetent. Her father had raised her well enough that she was going to be okay without him here still. “I know how they feel.”

Is anyone interested in doing a group thread with jonmbege and I? We’re looking for a Murphy account and we have ideas as far as Murphy/Mbege being both bad influences and stepping up to the plate and taking Reece under their wings and helping her deal with being on the ground without her father. (And intensifying her anger towards the Councillors for letting her father sacrifice him unnecessarily-- like I said, bad influences).
If you’re interested shoot me a message! I’m happy to talk on skype and fill anyone in on what ideas we already have~
